Paracetamol Overdose Help

Paracetamol overdose?

Paracetamol (known as tylenol or acetaminophen in the US) is very dangerous if you take too much. I know in the US our pills come in 500 mg each, and a person can safely take up to 4 grams per day (8 pills).... after that, you start permanently damaging your liver. If she is really taking a ton (like even more than what you say) she could permanently damage her liver and perhaps die.

Tylenol overdose is a popular suicide choice... people take a bottle of pills one night, go to sleep hoping to never wake up, and in the morning feel fine and are happy that nothing happened. Except now they have completely destroyed their liver. A few days later, they begin to feel very sick, go to the hospital, and they are told the only way to save them is a liver transplant, which many people cannot get in time. It takes like a week from the time of the overdose until they die. If the person takes all the pills, then goes to the hospital within like 8 hours, they can have their stomach pumped and get a drug called mucomyst that will help lessen the damage of the tylenol. I tell you all of this not because I think she is trying to kill herself, but so you can be the judge of how much she took and how serious the consequences are. Why is she taking that much? Is she in pain? If so, tell her to stop with the paracetamol and take something else (like ibuprofen) or if it is really severe, she should see her doctor!

Don't be afraid to tell someone if you think she has taken a lot. Although 14 pills in one day may be damaging her liver, it won't kill her. But if she takes like 2 more doses like that in a day.... I don't want to scare you or her, but paracetamol is serious stuff and can have terrible consequences if abused. Good luck to you both!

What's it like to die from a paracetamol overdose?

What's it like to die from a paracetamol overdose?Horrific and painful. At first you may have no symptoms at all, or you’ll have relatively mild symptoms with sweathing, nausea and perhaps vomiting. This usually happens within half a day of ingestion and lasts until roughly 24 ours after ingestion. After a day, you will begin exhibiting signs of liver damage. You may feel pain in your abdomen, your kidneys begin to shut down and you’ll feel generally horrible.A couple of days after that, you will go through liver necrosis which in turn will likely trigger multiple organ failure. Your blood will no longer coagulate the way it should so wounds won’t heal. Your blood sugar drops to dangerous levels. The kidneys fail. You will probably experience personality shifts and confusion due to hepatic encephalopathy and brain swelling. And then you die.*It’s not a quick death. It’s not a pleasant death. It is horrific.Hospitals have an antidote though, and if you get it quickly enough it is possible to recover without any permanent injury at all because the liver is freaking awesome. There was a case in Sweden some while back where a young woman tried to kill herself with paracetamol and alcohol. She popped the pills, drank the alcohol and then went to sleep. She woke up in the morning, happy to be alive because she had changed her mind. She also felt fine, so she considered herself lucky and went on with her life. For perhaps half a day that is, until her liver was so damaged that she began experiencing the more nasty symptoms and decided to go to the hospital. Sadly by then it was too late for the antidote and she went through the whole process and died in horrible anxiety and pain.* It is possible to survive even this last stage and make a pretty good recovery, but it’s less likely the farther it’s progressed.

What's a paracetamol overdose like?

A paracetamol overdose is a horrible, long, lingering, agonising death. I hope you don't mind, but I'd like to explain about paracetamol just in case someone out there is thinking about it.

Different amounts effect people in different ways but an approximate amount to place you in danger is only TEN to TWELVE tablets.

Paracetamol doesn't kill you at first, you vomit as your body tries, without success to eject the poison. And, you'll wake up from those sleeping tablets as you hurl your guts up.

Then you feel ok for anything up to 12 hours. The pain you had in your tooth or your headache's gone. OR... Oh well, tried to kill myself but it didn't work. Tomorrow's another day. You'll feel better about whatever it is that made you do it.

You start to feel ill and scared.

You'll end up at an Accident & Emergency.

When they find out what you took it's TOO LATE.

The paracetamol has been absorbed by your body.

You end up in Intensive Care but that's just so they can try to make your death a little less agonising but to stop enough of the pain to help you not to scream, they'd have to give you an overdose of morphine, which by the way, they won't do.

You took them by accident or on purpose and you've changed your mind. You're only a teenager who was dumped and felt so sad and desperate. You don't want to end it all. TOUGH. You ARE going to die.

Every cell in your body is in agony.

Your kidneys fail as do other organs in your body... slowly, horribly.

Your liver can't cope with the poison and fails.

You're conscious. Those people you thought would just find out you'd killed yourself; taken an overdose, fallen asleep and never woken up... they'll be at your bedside, crying, helpless, watching you slowly die.

It can take up to 36 hours. That's THREE days of pain you can't bear, unable to sleep, shutting down minute by minute.

Please, ANYONE out there who's taken too many by accident get HELP! Or, anyone thinking of suicide. Would you still do it if the people who love/care about you were in the room with you. I don't think so.

How do I cure a paracetamol overdose of 23 tablets?

Treatment of paracetamol overdose is time critical. There is a drug, Acetylcysteine that can be given to prevent the liver damage from the breakdown products of paracetamol. While it is most effective if treatment is started within eight hours of paracetamol ingestion, acetylcysteine can protect the liver if infused up to, and possibly beyond, 24 hours of ingestion.Acetylcysteine is considered to be 100 per cent effective in preventing liver damage and death if it is administered within eight hours of overdose, after which the efficacy declines rapidly.Acetylcysteine - DrugBankhttp://webarchive.nationalarchiv...
