Peer Marking On My Coursework

Have you ever had a teacher who had a really screwed up grading system?

When I was in college, my freshman English professor had the craziest of systems I had ever seen. It was basically as follows, regarding written assignments:Comma splice -10ptsRun-on sentence -10 ptsSpelling error -10 ptsPunctuation error -5 ptsSubject Verb Agreement error -10ptsTense agreement -10 ptsVagueness -10 ptsCitation in the wrong format -25ptsand there were a few others. And each instance of the error was deducted; so, let’s say you had your citation in the wrong format (even if a parenthesis was off or a period in the wrong place under MLA format, it would be considered wrong by him!), you are at the minimum to pass the paper. Add a punctuation error, and you failed. He was THAT hard core.*****Edit: I should note that I had the chairperson of the English department review my papers before I dropped the class, and he said that, after his review and the way he would have graded them, I should have had absolutely no problem getting at least a B. The professor was given a “light schedule” after that semester for the next three years, and retired at the end of my senior year. I never had him again.*****As to the final grading:A = 95 - 100B - 85–95C= 75 - 85F = below 75(He didn’t give D’s.)The crazy loon actually allowed negative points! I dropped the class after realizing that he hated me, and that there was absolutely no chance I could pass the class. By the second paper, I already had (seriously!) -150 pts. We had eight more papers. I would have needed to get 100% on ALL of them in order to even hope for a C.After college, I taught high school for two years. I made it next to impossible for my students to fail their classes. I was much like the teacher in “Dangerous Minds.” “You start the class with an A; it is your job to keep it.”My grading policy was:Attendance and Participation: 35%Homework: 35%Tests: 20%Quizzes: 10%So, if you came to class, participated, and did your homework, you could pass, even with a zero on every test and quiz. Ironically, I had a few students who were failing because they refused to do homework or participate. So, I guess my grading scheme was kind of crazy, also.

Is it cheating if students help each other for doing an assignment?

Can a teacher give any grade they want?

Ultimately, the teacher has the final discretion and determination of grade. That said, it should be noted that any ethical teacher will do the following things:
1. Explain their grading structure up front to people involved.
2. Send home a syllabus for coursework to establish grading assessments and classroom/grading expectations and procedures.
3. Send out regular, periodic progress reports to inform a student of their progress and performance in their coursework.
4. Be objective and fair in their evaluations of student work.
5. Provide a variety of means to evaluate and grade a student (e.g. worksheets, essays, tests/quizzes, presentations, projects, etc.)

By doing the above, it should ensure that a student is aware of their progress in the class, keep the teacher's evaluation at a fair and accurate level, and eliminate biased grading by teachers.
