People Are Mad That I Started A Club About Equality

What are some ideas for an Equality Club at school?

At my school some friends and i are trying to push for an Equality club in order to educate and show people that we need to support equal rights like feminism, LGBT rights, and the harms of racism. the problem is, we have no idea what to do about any actual club activities. any ideas? ( reminder: we are in a conservative poor school so we wont have much funding)

What should we name our club about gender equality and woman's poverty around the world?

So you want a name that is inclusive of all genders, groups and people when you are ignoring the problems (poverty in this case) of half the population under the guise of equality.

The name is "Modern Feminists."

Edit: You said "women's poverty," not "poverty." If you can't take honesty that's your problem.

Why do many people who claim to advocate for equality want different standards for different people based on their race or sex? A meritocracy is born of the best person getting the job, whether they come from the top or the bottom.

Probably because we can’t get past our subjective evaluations of fairness. We can easily get sucked into the vortex of trying to rectify all the inequities of the past, though we all establish a different cut off point for the backward looking. This, when accompanied by revisionist and exclusionary histories, means we can never realistically establish, what it is we “need” to overcome.Until we move on, starting from the present, we will likely never overcome the baggage of the past, allowing it to cause hatred and bigotry, into the future.

Why do black people want equality but still separate themselves from the rest of american society?

black history month.....how 'bout asian history month or native american history month?
bet? how about the all-hawaiian channel?
soul charts? i mean, how exclusive can you get?
naacp? what about the advancement of other people who aren't black? does the naacp refuse them service?

Equality in social class? sociology.?

Some good ideas here and sociolgically we might even say a bit more than that:

1. that in most modern societies we operate on two interpretations of equality:
-equality of outcomes or resources( social/economic/poltiical)
and
-equality of opportunity

2. that from different perpectives we argue for different approaches to inequality:
2.1 Functionalism especially influenced by the work of Davis and Moore :
that the right combination of equality of opportunity but inequalityy of outcomes operates smoothly and is essential for the efficient functioning of society. Moreover this sociological perspective fits with the key principles of modern liberal democratic socieities
2.2 Conflict theory:
that inequalty results from major structural relations which reconstruct major injustices in different forms in different societies - and these need to be redressed.. We can only do this by analysiing the historical construction of the structures and cultural values that have generated our current, complex, systems of class/gender/ethnic inequalities . Moreover there are major contradictions in modern societies which
-are based on the underlying principles of democracy and social justice yet
-generate the injustices of our present systems of inequality.

so the ongining job in sociology is to understand precisely what forms this argument takes in any one era/form of modern society..for example:
-why is global slavery more prevalent now than it has ever been in any other period of recorded hisotry?
-how can we shape our education systems to have the most functional balance between equality of opportunity and inequality of outcome?
-how do the different strands of inequality-gender. ethnicity and class interact in our globalised forms of poltical economy today?

Are country clubs racist towards rich non-white people?

My uncle is a CEO for a insurance company and he's wealthy. He wants to sign up for a country club but the problem is he's black and I have heard rumors that at alot of country clubs, they only want rich whites, not rich blacks, asians,or other non whites.

Can you believe in equality without being a feminist?

It’s a question of definitions. My grandmother on my father’s side was a proud feminist, a suffragette in the Philadelphia area at the time. This is a major point of pride for that side of the family.Growing up, major transformations to reform terrible practices socially in public and in the workplace have happened in the 60s, 70s and even 80s to address male physical dominance in the workplace. My wife’s first job title after college was “Print Room Girl” and was routinely accosted. It was probably better than what would have happened 20 years prior. The feminist movement was an important movement and as long as it stands for equality of rights and opportunity, I stand with it. I strongly believe that every person should be judged on their own merit and abilities. The “women’s marches” that are occurring where pro-life women are not allowed to attend seem somewhat ironic since the original feminists were staunchly pro-life.Is a “feminist” a person who would wear outfits that if a man wore the equivalent they would be a-OK with it? Imagine a crowd of thousands of men with penises attached to their heads and with a smattering of women going along with them for support marching into cities. Does that seem reasonable? Is it unreasonable because men are “in power” or is it unreasonable because it’s obscene?I think it’s obscene for either sex to wear depictions of their genitalia on their heads and we’re supposed to give it a pass because the people are claiming affiliation to a great cause. I don’t know if I’d go as far as claiming that my friends on Facebook who marched wearing pussy hats are misandrists but I feel like they are in a social club more than part of a force for good.

What does equality of outcome mean?

It means that given the same opportunity and privileges two people should end up in the same position or at least equal position. But equality of opportunity does not promise equality in the outcome. People have different levels of skill and put different amounts of effort into work they do. In the gender equality context there are many feminists who would argue that there are not enough female CEOs or not enough women in the STEM fields. To which someone might reply using “equlity of opportunity does not mean that therr must be equal outcome.” woman have different aspirations and values and often put an emphasis on their home life, but for women who value their career it can be harder simply because the boys club does not want girls entering their world.I can see both sides of that argument but the fact that no one is promised equal outcome is still true.
