Persuing A Future Career In Acting Advice/help

Is it worth it to move to LA to pursue a career in acting?

It depends on what your Adversity Quotient (AQ) is. If you are tough and can handle consistent rejection till you make it to the top then it is a great idea especially if you are very passionate about acting. If you are looking for just money though I would advise against it.StatisticsAccording to the Nonemployers Survey (NES) sector 71 (Arts, entertainment, and recreation) has one of the lowest overall income per business unit averaging only $25,398 per person (safe assumption that Hollywood contracting actors are shown in this data).Since we assume their are no employees for these units if we divide the overall receipts by the number of establishments in the sector you would get the average income per person, which is $25,398 (Keep in mind this does include part timers and NES business receipts must be at least $1,000 in order to be including in this statistic series).Of course if you make it big in Hollywood you could become a millionaire. It is a crap shoot, but if you are happy it would be absolutely worth it. If you don’t mind the grind. If you don’t mind waiting tables in hopes of shooting the moon….why not! What advice would you give for moving to Los Angeles to pursue my acting dreams?

I once had a gig editing a series of interviews with professional actors who gave mini-master classes on pursuing their craft. Some were more eloquent and memorable than others but only one sticks with me 7 years later. It was from Ed Begley Jr., famous for his work on St. Elsewhere and in a few of Christopher Guest’s films, “Best in Show” included. He was asked about how to deal with what some actors consider the most painful part of the job: auditions. Begley said he loves auditions. Why would he love an experience that so many find awkward and degrading? He says it gives him a chance to act. This is a man who loves his profession so much that it doesn’t matter if he’s working in a feature film on a million dollar set or he’s just reading lines with a casting agent in a bland office... it’s all work to him and it gives him a rush. For anyone who truly loves acting: there are endless possibilities in Los Angeles. Find new filmmakers and theater directors to collaborate with and get a side job in some kind of service field; everywhere you go, you’ll have a chance to work, meet good people, get better, and make your luck. For people who just want to be famous: we don’t really need more of that. You probably have a better chance of becoming YouTube-famous than Hollywood-famous and you can save yourself the airfare.

What are some successful careers that can be pursued in the automotive industry?

I have always loved and been captivated by cars, and whenever I try to figure out what my true passion is while trying to decide my future career plans, I always come back to my love of cars. However, I am an Ivy League student and would not be interested in any sort of dealership/service position by any means. I want to have a very successful career in a field that has me working closely with automobiles, but I also do not wish to be an engineer or designer. Are there any options left for careers in this sector that are respectable alternatives to the careers in investment banking or consulting that everyone seems to think are the only viable options to be successful after graduating an ivy? Thanks in advance for any advice/help!
