Petrol Fumes But No Petrol Leaks

Can the smell of petrol, diesel or other fuels be harmful to human health?

The petrol smell actually comes from the petrol fumes. So when you're smelling petrol, diesel or petroleum based fuels, you're actually inhaling their fumes. These fumes enter the body, get absorbed in the bloodstream and reach your vital organs including heart and brain. This is bad for health because your blood ends up containing traces of the fuel, because of which it's oxygen content reduces and thus your organs don't get enough oxygen. Also, the presence of fuel traces in the blood would have harmful effects in the body. But these harmful effects would take place only in case of prolonged inhalation of the fumes. If you smell the fumes while filling fuel, twice or thrice a month, it may be okay. But if you're smelling the fumes regularly then it'd be harmful. Thanks for the A2A.

Petrol Smell from Motorcycle? Carb leak?

Bike is a 400 Dragstar. There is a distinct smell of petrol coming from my motorcycle when it is parked in the garage. No marks on the floor from the bike, fuel cap is secure, everything seems normal. The smell seems to be coming from the carburetor, where there is a tear drop like build up of petrol over some of the screws, and the odd drop of petrol on the plate/catcher thing that sits underneath the carby. (I'll add a photo)

As I have a very limited amount of knowledge on this topic I'm wondering is this normal, and can I do something to fix it/fix the smell?

My car smells of petrol / gas when I start it, but there are no leaks on the ground, what could cause this?

A small gas leak in the engine compartment is not going to drip on the ground. Even if it does, the gas will evaporate quickly, so not seeing a spot on the ground is understandable. The place where gas would be leaking are very limited. This is the fuel line from the gas tank to the carburetor or fuel injection system, the injection system itself or at the carburetor/throttle body. There is no where else that gas is present. The other source of a gas smell will fumes from the gas tank or a leak in the charcoal canister that connects vapor from the tank and recycles it into the air intake when you start your engine. Leaks in these areas are monitored by the car’s computer using a pressure sensor on the evaporative collection system and will cause the check engine light to turn on.I developed a small hole in the filler tube of the gas tank in a car I owned. The smell of gas was strong inside the car because the leak was at the top of the tank under the back seat. It only smelled when I filled the tank full and it sloshed out the hole, soaking the insulation between the tank and the floorboard. Of all the leaks I have had over the years, this was the most expensive as the entire tank had to be removed to fix it. I ended up scrapping the car instead.

Mercedes Benz W124 E series gas/petrol fume in the cabin?

I really need someone to read this seriously and suggest sensible answers. Thanks

I loved this W124 in and out but the only thing that disappoint me and my family is the petrol fume in the cabin.
This has been going on for years and i finally bring this question online.

Every time after a full tank of gas/petrol( very full ), and not long after ignitiontion of the engine, the slight presence of petrol fume could be smelt.
The presence of the petrol fume also can be smelt if undergone several sharp conering at relatively high speed at any fuel level, and even occurs when the fuel tank is half filled.

Except gentle driving, gentle acceleration and conering and even kick-down is applied several times , there is NO petrol fume will be smelt regatless of program selector on the automatic transmission at any fuel level left in the fuel tank.

I have tried to inspect the fuel tank personally by taking out the covers and mats at the trunk case and did not have visual on oil leak, but only the smell of petrol only.

I suspect that there must be a small hole big enough to allow those patrol vapour to be emmitted somewhere.

Now for those who drive this type of car, have you encounter similar situiation like me in this case? Any solution(s)?

Very Thanks

Fuel leak when filling up tank. What could be wrong and how much does it cost to fix?

Alright, so recently, I've noticed that whenever I add fuel to my tank, a small amount began to leak out from the bottom of my car near where the tank is and would stop leaking once I stopped the pump. I checked to make sure that it wasn't leaking while I was driving, and it appears to only do so while I am filling up the tank. Recently, the leak has gotten worse and now a significant amount of the gasoline I am paying to put in my tank is ending up on the ground instead. The fuel efficiency of my car doesn't seem to have changed much, so I don't believe it is a leak in the tank itself (however I was told that some of the fumes may be escaping before being put to use which is slightly affecting the fuel efficiency). Anyways, I was just wondering what could be wrong and how much it may cost to fix the problem? I don't want to be told something else or charged for extra stuff when I go to get it fixed since I am currently low on money.

Can i drive my car safely with its petrol tank leaking drop by drop?

Even while parked along the street, someone could toss a match, or a cigarette accidentally into that pool of gas area and cause your car to go up in flames.
I would get that patch kit, like "DC" mentioned, but don't drive your car to pick it up. Also call your fire dept. and inform them of your problem, so you have covered all bases.......they may have something to soak up any fuel on the ground.
Happy Summer!

How do I avoid petrol smell from generator in closed room? No leaks but still room full of smell.

A generator should NEVER be in an enclosed room.  The generator should be outside.   The petrol smell means there is a leak and the fumes are dangerous.Get the generator OUT of the room and have someone examine the generator for leaks.  It should NOT be turned on, because it can cause a fire.

I have a 95 chevy cavalier when i start it i smell strong gas fumes but its not leaking gas what should i do?

If you smell strong gas fumes, it's leaking. You just haven't seen where yet. Get it looked at before you have a 95 crispy critter.

Scooter smells STRONGLY like petrol when put inside?

Make , model, year of scooter really helpful. Petrol smell comes from a leak or a open fuel tank vent- depending on year the fuel tank may have a cap with a vent hole or a sealed cap with the tank neck venting to air cleaner with a check valve in it to reduce the smell problem- EPA rules loose before 1980, tightened some 1990 and by 2005 was common in many markets to have sealed vents-- but European market had less equipment required breaks at 50cc and 125cc so older open vents allowed longer than the larger models got them. Another possible point- fuel tank petcocks on many were vacuum diaphrams and valves with a start bypass or a electric solenoid shutoff- these devices often had a manual prime bypass and if they failed many people would just run off the prime position and gas would trickle and vaporize in open causing the odor in garage symptom, occasional carb float bowl leak when not running. Get a manual for the scooter and check the fuel tank petcock valving and carb for shutoffs, manual valve lever positions.
