Petsmart Hamsters Question

Hamsters from petsmart?

I hope everything so far has been helpful. I understand that alot of stores sell animals from mills. I was glad when I was working when one of our breeders brought in the hamsters. His litters are all so sweet. He really seems to care alot about the little guys. He was telling me how he is redoing a room for them with like 4 big cages and they get the entire room to themselves. It was a good feeling to meet the person who sells us his pets.

Our hamsters don't actually see a vet but we check them all when they come in and go over them with the breeder. We check them all daily for any symptoms. We have cages in the back if they get sick or injured so they can recover and not infect any of the other hamsters. Since I've been there all the hamsters have gone back to the sale floor. We find the problems right away. Because our stores are mostly pets we have less supplies than most pet stores. I liek this because we can concentrate more on the animals. They made it clear to me that the pets come first, then the customers. If the pets are not taken care of with us we wont have any customers. Every single pet we sell goes home. We have never had to put one down or send them to a shelter. I take great pride in that!

I just want to reassure you that not all pet stores lack concern for the pets. Like someone else said, it depends on the employees. Those that aren't fond of small animals won't put in much effort to work with you. A shelter is a great idea too! Those need homes badly. Animal shelters break my heart because they are way over populated.

Best of luck with future pets!!

Hamster Questions?

1. I would personally go to either Petco or Petsmart because they are a larger chain and if there are problems they usually have a certian day health guarantee, and I dont know if the other place has that. If not going to a pet store, go to a breeder.
2. ALL hamsters are noctornal, the only real downside to a dwarf is they cant be housed in normal hamster cages because of their size. They need to be housed in either mouse cages or aquariums.
3. The best cage for any dwarf hamster that I have found is HABITRAIL MINI (the bars are perfect size to not let your robo escape). Most Habitrail mini cages cost around $25. If you cannot find one of these cages you need to get an aquarium or another cage that is said to house mice or dwarf hamsters. The bars need to be LESS than 1/4" (or LESS than 1-1.5cm) if it is this size or larger, your hamster WILL escape through the bars.
4. There is no real disadvantage to buying just one hamster other than the fact that two will play together (but they may also fight). I find that having one hamster would be easier because you would be able to hand tame it much easier, and spend more time with it. Also, ALL hamsters bite, but they only bite when afraid or being hurt. Once tame, they rarely bite.
5. Depending where you buy them, yes, because they are more rare of a breed than the typical dwarf hamster that many people may buy.
6. No hamsters really carry diseases, they are domisticated and usually do not have something harmful to humans. If you are worried about a disease, simply wash your hands before AND after handling your hamster to ensure you dont get any "germs"

Petsmart Hamster Question?

They will usually take them out, but only let you hold them if you are going to buy them.

It varies from store to store but here is the list:

In addition to that they usually carry Syrian hamster, Teddy bear hamsters (long haired Syrian hamsters) and sometimes Honey bear hamsters (just a golden colored Syrian hamster).

Remember the dwarf hamsters can be in same breed groups (no robos with chinese or winter whites with campbells) housed together, the syrians cannot.

Question about hamsters at petco or petsmart?

I had 1 roboroviski hamster. He died. But no. You may get one by accident, but that is rare. You should research, and find out a good type of hamster to get. I recomend a teddy bear or a Syrian hamster. do not keep any hamsters togeher no mader what. Roborovski hamster are timid and fast little speed demons. It took a while to get mine to like me. I you get a nice hamster. :)

Do hamsters at PetSmart come fixed?

Nope. They come as they are, if they did their price would be wayyy higher.. And people don't really do that with hamsters unless they're having bodily issues...

Petsmart hamster policy?

Yes if you read the agreement you signed when you bought the hamster, you will see that if something happens within 14 days either it dies, get sick, or you don't like it, you can get a replacement. But by replacement it means you have to bring the original hamster back to the store (even if its dead) and they will exchange it, so you will not be able to get a free hamster.

Does Petsmart Vaccinate Their Hamsters?

Perhaps I can shed some light on this. I actually worked at a Petsmart! :)

Our policy is that no sick or injured animal can or will be sold. If an animal does get sick or hurt, we take it to the vet and then we treat it until it gets better. If at any time a hamster gets wet tail, we give isolate it and give it medicine and special care as the veterinarian prescribes. If a hamster accidentally hurts itself (scratches itself on something, etc) then we also isolate it and take care of it. We never give them vaccinations though... Just oral medication, ointments, or lots and lots of quiet time to recover.
