What is the difference between hentai, ecchi and harem?

Harem - A relationship situation where multiple people enjoy being around one person for reasons of love or adoration. There are harems where there is no romance by they still gravitate to the central person. The central person can be male or female. There is usually some amount of sexual tension involved even if nothing develops from it.

Ecchi - Ecchi is sexual charged scenes that can show nudity but don't show actual sex. Nudity usually only shows breasts or asses with genitalia being obscured in some way, such as hand, bandages,hair,light, etc, so the reader/viewer doesn't see anything.

Hentai - Basically it is animated porn. If you would consider it to be porn if it was live action then it falls under the hentai tag. Some manga/anime or tagged as hentai despite having no sex scenes.

There are also reverse-harems (one female main character with a bunch of males surrounding her... like in Ouran High School Host Club). Those are less common than regular harem anime, but still count as harem since it's one character surrounded by 3 or more characters of the opposite gender.

Harem anime isn't the same as hentai. It's usually comedic in nature. Your friend was probably referring to how harem anime can be ecchi though (meaning perverted... but definitely not as much or as bad as hentai... just slightly perverted, and usually in a humorous way... like in the form of perverted gags/jokes/misunderstandings between the characters). Not pornographic or hardcore.
