Photography Videography

Should I get into photography more or videography?

Have you made many music videos/short films yet?  I'm going to guess not.  Filmmaking is not for the meek/half-hearted.  Try making a short film.  Dive head first and give it your all.  If it's truly meant to be, you'll know by the end of it.  It's only to have a casual interest in filmmaking while pursuing photography, or vice versa.  You'll find a lot of the skills involving lighting, composition/framing, camera settings, and editing translate to both.Photography has a lower barrier of entry to get into.  You of course have a lot to learn with photography too, and there's plenty that is specific to the craft, and it should not be underrated, but you won't know which you should pursue full-force until you actually go through the filmmaking process from start to finish.  You'll have learned a lot too, so that's the time to decide whether to keep going, or say, "I think not" and confidently take that plunge into still photography.

Is time lapse photography and time lapse videography the same?

Time lapse is taking frames spaced sometimes several seconds to several minutes apart and playing them back at 25(UK) or 30(USA) frames per second, the longer between frames the faster time is compressed, the slow movement of growing plants will need a longer time interval between frames than something that is moving faster e.g. traffic.

The best camera to do this is often a stills camera, some have intervalometers built in to do just that. Then you take these frames and edit them into a video using pretty much any video editor. Even Windows Movie Maker which is free can do it.

The difference between time lapse photography and videography is blurred by the long frame rates, so taking the the individual frames is stills photography, but these frames are assembled into a video as the final output.

Is videography difficult than photography?

In videos you have to focus on the action and you have to hold the shot a lot longer leaving a lot more room for error. Sometimes you get the action you want sometimes you don't. many of the times you don't know if it’s effective until you get back to your computer. People choose videos because they like to watch Videos, they like actions, noise and capture videos because it make them feel alive and part of the experience. Watching videos in times seems like dreaming with awakened eyes.Taking photos, honestly, seems a bit easier. You don’t have to lug around a tripod all the time. Nor do you have to worry about sound quality. You can point your camera lens at an object, click the shutter, and you’re done. But because videos require a tripod and often a microphone, very few people know how to create good one as the tools need to be handled professionally. But also videos can make more money than still photographs. As videos are difficult to shoot and present there is less competition as compared to photographs. Honestly, once you get the hand of taking videos, I think you’ll find it’s really not much harder than taking photos and you can earn more.Watch out some latest wedding videos here and understand the videos to get some ideas of video making.

How would I get a Videography/Photography job with National Geographic?

By being an established nature and travel photogapher with published work in recognized outlets.

National Geographic can aford to hire and contract the BEST of the best photogaphers in the world. They don't need to read resumes and peruse portfolios. If you ARE one of the best of the best, they will KNOW who you are.

Your course of action will to be to get your work in established nature and travel magazines, such as AAA's member publication, "VIA," or other, similar periodicals. Another route would be to work with such a photographer, to learn the tricks of the trade and, work your way up to become one of the "elite" class of photogaphers that National Geographic seeks. In other words, get out of the local market and establish yourself on the international scene.

What is the transition from photography to videography like?

The transition has become somewhat of an expectation. Professional and commercial photographers will offer some sort of video capture services. That expectation came about because the video capture quality on higher-end cameras has become really good in the last few years. Clients sometimes assume the transition is as simple as pushing the record button, but that is far from the truth.Video is it’s own monster. It requires continuous light sources. a lot fo photographers shoot with strobe, which you can’t use with video. So, suddenly, if you want to light a subject, you’re looking at a new lighting setup. Continuous lights are very expensive and big. A kit that I’ve used to replicate sunlight, you’d have to use a 10K Hitchmi, needs it own generator and 10 people to move!Camera movements for desirable footage require smooth movement and steadyhand rigs, along with rails and booms, etc. Tracking focus with shallow depth of field is difficult and complex because you have a subject and camera that are both moving. The way to track focus right is to have a focus puller who’s controlling your focus remotely.Audio is it’s own challenge as well. In camera mic is no good, you’ll need additional equipment. Finally, ediiting. No more photoshop. You’re in video editing software. The trend started as clients wanted video from professional photographers as if it’s no big deal…but it’s a big deal.
