How do I fix my AUX port in my car?

This is a little tricky.The aux port jack is basically a set of spring terminals connected to wires; as the plug is inserted the springs are supposed to snap into place against the different conductors on the plug. If one of these springs loses tension (for any number of reasons), the connection will be intermittent; holding or tilting the wire just so adds enough of an angle to make the connection. Another common problem is that the terminals themselves become detached from the circuit board and it takes the right wiggle to “push” the connection back together.So one option is simply to bend the springs back into place and/ or solder them back onto the board. It’s getting to them that’s hard. You’ll have to remove the stereo, and then probably unscrew the bottom cover (this often entails multiple fiddly screws). This will expose the internals of the aux port jack and you can re-solder gently bend the terminal springs “inward” slightly. (Yes, I know, soldering. It’s easier than it seems but if you’ve never done it before a car stereo probably isn’t the place to start. Find a friend who knows how, or take it to your local electronics shop for an inexpensive touch-up).This is, sadly, likely to be a temporary fix. If you are going to go to the trouble to take the thing apart you might as well just connect a new jack. Putting a new mini-jack into an existing radio is nearly impossible; what I’d do is disconnect the jack altogether and add a new wire (thin shielded stereo coax) from the place it connects, adding strain relief and leaving it long enough to extend well into the dashboard when the radio is re-installed. Now it’s a matter of finding a place to run that wire, and add a jack there. You will wind up with an installation something like this:The nice thing about this is that any future repairs don’t require removal of the stereo, just the added panel.
