Problems With Doing Squats

Why can't I balance when doing squats?

All right, so I haven't done very much exercise for around about 7 months, bar running the past few Sundays (5k) and some swimming, due to problems with my knee.

Now it's not hurting as much, and the fact that the sight of my butt makes me want to cry, I've decided to get back into exercising slowly. I wanted to try out small steps, so squats, sit ups, etc.

The problem is, I can't seem to balance when squatting any more? I have my feet shoulder width apart, I bend at the knees, trying to keep my tummy tucked in and my back straight without leaning too far forward or letting my knees go over my toes, but every time I get anywhere that will benefit my butt, I fall backwards and need to stand straight.

Can anyone give me tips on how to balance more, or will I need someone to hold me until I strengthen my lazy muscles?

Any tips on how to endure leg pain when doing squats?

i am a part of this organization in school where we do some military training after school hours, 3 times a week.. there's this one punishment that i have problems with,squatting.. it's kinda different from regular ol' squatting,, actually we call it pumping.. anyways, here's how you do it: you stand with your legs together, feet forming 45 degrees. your arms crossed where your ears are between your middle and index finger. and you bend your knees and go up and down.. that part ain't hard.. the thing is sometimes the commander makes us stay in a position longer that usual,...
e.g.: 1/2 squat.. same position legs together, knees bent, feet on tippy-toes and we go down on knee-level..your back must be straight...
I hurts so much! when you do it long enough your whole leg will shake! it's really really painful..

we can't do exercise right before the training.. i can only exercise at my house.. so is there any way to reduce the pain? like an ointment? or any leg-endurance exercises that i can do at home that will somehow reduce the pain...

thanks to all who will comment.. tips and advises are very much appreciated...
THANKSSSS!!! ^u^

Hips hurt when doing squats?

If you get sharp pain while doing squats, something is wrong with your form. Hard to say what.

Looking at the ceiling is part of the problem, not part of the solution. Mark Rippetoe writes, "Looking up at the ceiling when squatting has so many detrimental effects on proper technique that some law against it will eventually have to be adopted. It is the enemy of correct bottom position, hip drive out of the bottom, and correct chest position, the three most important factors in a safe, correct squat." Try looking at a point on the floor ten feet in front of you.

Edit: These two videos helped me to fix some form problems in my squat. Not sure whether you're having the same problems, but maybe they'll help.

Medical - if my knees crack doing a squat or duck walk is that disqualifiying?

Hell no, thats totally normal, but if those cracking noises are bones separating from your socket or something then you might have a problem there.

But dont worry about it I have those all the time and thats not going to disqualify you from anything.

By doing squats and lunges and jogging will it make my legs bigger?

Is it safe to do squats with back pain?

Wear comfortable shoes that will support your squat.Make sure you warm up first. Do this by using a treadmill for 15 minutes or jogging lightly. If you are using weight to squat, do at least one set (15 reps) without weight.Don’t proceed if you have pain in #2 or #3.Place your feet under your shoulders, engage your core, inhale through your nose, bend with your knees slowly until you are just about sitting.Exhale through your mouth, slowly straighten your knees.Never ever use your back to bend. I recommend hiring a trainer if you’re unsure about this.Note: If you are severe back pain it may be a sign of something else. Squats are great but they can be subbed out with other exercises, such as hack squats.-Andrew Blakehall Arthritis Ninja.

Is it making my squats less effective to lift my heels off the floor?

If your heels are rising up then, yes, there are a number of problems that need to be remedied if you want to work into proper squatting position with your heels down.  If you have something available to do this, you should put a small wood block under your heels when you do the squats, and push into that instead of having the weight on your toes. When performing squats properly to hit your entire lower body, you want the weight evenly distributed throughout your whole foot; ideally, all the pressure should be pushed through the middle of your foot rather than the ball or the heel directly.  If you can't keep your heels down, then you lose the even pressure and put excessive force on your knees which can definitely cause injury.  Putting the block under your heels will give you a point of contact with the floor that will allow you to evenly distribute the force. This, however, is only a temporary solution.  You do need to improve your hip and ankle mobility so that you can squat better, but more so for your own physical well-being.  Have tight ankles and hips can lead to several different types of lower body injuries, but the biggest problem would be for your knees and your lower back.  Continue doing the squats, but also look at fixing the mobility issues so you can ensure joint longevity as well.
