For the first initial time syncing a controller, it will have to be one of two types: a) it will have to be bluetooth - and i don't think i've seen any of those. You can go to accessory settings under settings in the XMB and connect the bluetooth device b) it, like a regular PS3 controller, will need a cable that you can connect to the USB port on the PS3. Just connect the cable to the controller and the PS3, and it should automatically sync. If I were you, I'd invest in buying the Dualshock 3 controller marketed by Sony - yes, it is as expensive as a new game, but it lasts you a long time, has sixaxis motion control, and is worth the price. i bought a ps3 controller off of ebay although it didnt seem like an official controller from sony because the buttons were bigger than on my controller i got with my ps3, it had the sony sticker at the back and it says sony on the controller it was fine for half a year then it stopped syncing with my ps3, it could turn on the ps3 but wont sync it'll work with the usb connected but when i take it out 4 lights keep blinking, and when connected it shows 2 lights when it is controller 1 help? i already tried reset button

Why won't my PS3 controller sync with PS3 when playing PS2 games?
I have an original 60G, fully backwards compatible PS3. The controllers work fine with the PS3 games, but recently, when I try to play PS2 games, the controllers won't sync. I start the system no problem, and start the PS2 game. As always, the controller goes off until the PS2 software loads, and then I press the PS button on the controller to resync. It always worked fine before, but now the controller flashes all 4 lights trying to sync, and then just shuts off. If I plug it in with the usb cable and push the PS button when the PS2 software is running, it does sync and stays synched when I unplug it, but the controller doesn't remember the sync and I have to do this every time I start a PS2 game. I have not gotten any new games or controllers, and it is the same with all 4 (3 Dualshock 3 and 1 sixaxis) controllers I have. As I said, they all worked fine before. Anyone have any idea what the problem is? Thanks for your help.

Hey, the controller needs to be recalibrated and to do that you need to connect the controller to the PS3 console via USB then turn on the gaming system while its still in.Doing this usually helps to fix the problem and will pair the PS3 contriollers back to your console. Good luck!

Connect the controller with the USB cable to the console. Not detach it until is fully charged. That thing works on a rechargable battery.
