Puppies Umbilical Cords

Puppies umbilical cord wont stop bleeding?

Call your vet and ask for verbal advice, as this may be considered an emergency if it continues to bleed much longer. If that's not possible right now- follow these guidelines in the meantime:

Hold the puppy down gently with one hand. Pinch the tip of the cord with your thumb and forefinger with a piece of gauze between them and apply pressure for 5 minutes. Sprinkle corn starch (just run to the grocery and buy some) over the wound, apply some more pressure. Wrap the end in guaze and secure with a rubber band or medical tape. Wait for the bleeding to stem, place puppy back with mom to keep him warm.

Newborn puppies umbilical cord????????????????????

I DO NOT want to hear people flaming me about letting my dog giving birth whatsoever. It's lame, annoying, irritating and childish when it doesn't even APPLY to the person you're talking to.

Anyway, after mommy dog gave birth, she didn't bite the umbilical cords off short enough, so we had to interfere by tying dental floss at the cord around 1 inch from the belly. I cleansed the scissors and dental floss with alcohol antiseptic and dabbed the umbilical cord with iodine after it's cut short. I applied alcohol to the umbilical cord a few times today, but it's been around 12 hours since birth and the cord is not drying up or shrivelling. Is this normal? Should i apply more iodine to the cut umbilical cord so that it drys up faster?

Iodine and a puppies umbilical cord?

I have a question about where to cut/ put iodine on a puppy's umbilical cord. I know to cut it about 1 1/2 in. from the abdomen, and you're supposed to put iodine on the cord so it dries up and falls off a couple days later, but how do I put the iodine on? with an eyedropper? another question is though, iodine is poisonous- so won't the mother be licking the pups, and then lick the iodine, and get poison in her?

How do you cut the umbilical cord of a puppy?

If your dog is whelping (pregnant) and you are expecting to oversee the delivery, just let her take care of it. She’ll snip the umbilical and eat the afterbirth on her own; it’s instinct. You should be there to reassure her and get her to a vet if she seems to be having difficulty, but otherwise let her do her thing.

What are some ways to tie a puppy's umbilical cord when it is first born?

You just wrap thread around it and tie it tightly in a square knot. I use the waxed dental floss. It is strong and works well. Sometime moms bite them too short, so you have to apply direct pressure until the bleeding stops.

If pre-born puppies are attached to the mother with umbilical cords (they are), what keeps a big litter from getting tangled up in the womb and why don't we need to cut the cords when they are born?

Canine uteri are not one big "container" the way human uteri are.  They are horned, with individual compartments for each puppy.Ovary, Oviduct & UterusThe puppies are "lined up" so they don't get tangled with each other during gestation.(By the way, the mother bites the cord when the puppies are born.)

Puppy umbilical cord still bleeds a tiny bit?

My mamma dog just had puppies yesterday. I just noticed one has no stump of a cord left and when he moves over places rubbing his belly on things a tiny bit of blood is left every once in a while. What can i do to stop the bleeding. there about a day and a half old. and i am not sure if its related but she had another pup that died yesterday. i dont know what happened she took care of the umbilical cord and i picked it up to clean it up and its belly kinda looked like it tore out from the umbilical cord spot. If it wasn't for the one dying i wouldmt be soo worried but i have no idea if the two things are related

My puppies umbilical cord fell off possibly too soon will this cause a problem?

I have a puppy who is almost two days old and his umbilical cord already fell off leaving behind a small hole and I was just wondering if this is normal or will it cause an umbilical hernia? I just noticed it and cleaned it with alcohol. I don't want anyone snagging me for letting my dog have puppies as I see this quite often when there are questions about puppies. My dog has been shown in conformation and has several points and we did all of her health testing. She needed a cesarean and only three puppies survived and we had her spayed at the same time. Please if you can give me an answer I would appreciate it. I have tried searching online but can't seem to find anything. I also plan on calling my vet later this morning.

My dog wont cut my newborn puppies umbilical cord?? PLEASE HELP?? easy 10 points!!?

WHY is this dog not spayed? You obviously dont' care to be a responsible breeder. A responsible breeder will jump in and assist as needed in whelping. Tie off the umbilical cord 1/2 inch from the puppy with dental floss. Get a very sharp blade, preferably a single edge razor blade, shave the cord, not CUT, SHAVE, it until it severs from the placenta. Shaving saves blood by making clotting occur more quickly. Dip the cord in iodine. Dispose of the placenta. Spay your dog in eight weeks.
