Purchasing Kindle Paperwhite In Singapore

Why can't I buy and use a Kindle legally in Singapore?

Kindle availability in Singapore has everything to do with Amazon and little to do with Singapore.See, for instance, this list of countries where the Kindle is not available in:Kindle is currently not available in the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Chad, China, Cuba, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Gambia, Guinea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Democratic People’s Republic Of Korea, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, New Zealand, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Somalia, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Yemen. We're not alone in terms of lack of availability. The real reason is why, and that's not easy to answer.I was talking to an Amazon product manager for Kindle a couple weeks back, and she said that the reasons were 'political'. What this means I'm not sure - (i.e., is it political internally, as in they have internal resistance to an international rollout, or political in terms of Amazon not liking these countries?)But it's not hard to imagine why Amazon might be reluctant to do a worldwide push for the Kindle: they took a year before selling to the UK, and three years before selling to Canada. Whether or not they start selling in Singapore depends on their distribution and manufacturing capabilities, not on Singapore's attractiveness as a country.

Kindle Paperwhite low memory?

That 1.42 and 1.2 gig is probably flash memory which is like a disk. The Kindle probably also has RAM memory for displaying the ebook.

Normal non-PDF ebooks from Amazon are no problem. I have over 700 Amazon Kindle books (mostly plain text ones, not full of pictures) on my Paperwhite. I have even read 1000+ page Kindle books with no problem.

However, if you put any large format PDF ebooks on there (manga or other magazine size picture books that have much higher resolution than the Kindle and can be zoomed in on) or anything Amazon normally would not allow to be loaded onto the Paperwhite (large exact-image textbooks) then the Paperwhite might not have enough RAM memory to display it. That's why Amazon doesn't allow some huge exact-image ebooks to be loaded onto 6 inch readers or phones. Similarly, if the ebook you are reading has images, the author may have ignored the size limit of 127KB for their Kindle ebook images.

Also - if you have been running any Paperwhite games or utilities (Kindle Active content), one could have grabbed a bunch of RAM and not released it (or never exited fully).

Possible Fix:

In either case, try a soft reset. When the Paperwhite has plenty of charge (or is connected to charger), turn off the Paperwhite. Then hold the power button to ON for 30 seconds. Let go and wait for Kindle to do the total reboot (this will not delete any data, books, settings - this is a soft reset).

Then try reading that ebook again and see if you still have the same problem. If you got the ebook at Amazon and still have the same problem, contact them about it - maybe your Kindle has a memory problem. If you have to exchange your Paperwhite, as long as you register the new one to the same Amazon account you will be able to load all of your Amazon ebook purchases to it again via the the Paperwhite's Cloud view.

If I buy an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite device in USA will it work in India?

Sure. I bought my Kindle in the UK, then when I moved to Italy, I switched to Amazon.it for Kindle. Now I live in the US, and I use Amazon.com for buying everything, including Kindle books. I retained all the content I've bought in the different countries.

Are Kindles really worth it? Does any version provide the ability to read Quora? How good is it for reading papers with equations and diagrams?

I'm a selective reader and I work 8 hours a day on PC in office. I already have reached my quota of printed books as am into the civil services preparation and my bookshelves are overflowing. It is a boon that many of my favorite books are available in PDF but still I was unable to stare the screen more than 8 hours. Somehow I came to know about this kindle (7th Generation). Bought one for 5000 INR here Amazon. I felt like, knowing how to utilize the kindle is what more important. So let me take you for a ride, you can thank me later. Do not go with PDF. Convert all the PDF files to MOBI format here. You can download a free converter for the same. Then transfer all the mobi files from your laptop with a cable so that you do not miss any single kindle feature.Glare-free touch screen. There is no back-light for the screen and you can read only in the day-light/external light because of which your eyes do not get strained. You can turn the pages like a normal book with a simple touch. Also you can highlight & make a note wherever you feel like and can search for a meaning in dictionary (offline)  just by highlighting the text with your finger.Experimental Browser is another added  feature to browse the internet by connecting your kindle to wifi. This  is not up to the mark. You'll end up with screen blink if you still force. It is slim & sexy. Just perfect to carry in your travel time. I can manage 400 words per minute nicely. You can charge once in a week if you're an avid reader. If not, once in two weeks is enough. You read it correct! Most ebooks are cheaper than printed books. Also do not buy if you cannot develop interest without the smell/touch of a paper.
