Pursuing An Acting Career/finding Some Student Movies To Act In

How do I pursue a career in acting?

Your first step is to get realistic. There are not a bunch of open auditions you can go to hoping to be "discovered" or anything. You won't start on Netflix. Companies invest a lot of money in their productions and they trust that investment to trained and experienced professionals, not people who think they can do "creepy". Casting involves agents, casting directors, unions, marketing and so much more.

You start by getting quality training and experience. Take some acting classes, audition for community theater, do some student films. Make sure you love the work of acting and are exceptionally outstanding at it.

Then research and learn what is really involved in attempting an acting career. Here's a helpful website with more details about how the business works:

Should I pursue a career in acting?

I've been watching LOST and some other shows and movies I really like lately and they got me thinking and somewhat interested in becoming an actor. I've been reading biography's of people like Matthew Fox and it seems like all he did was move to NY, got some good advice, went to acting school and rolled with it. Does the field have a lot to do with fate and luck and how long does it take to make a good living off being an actor? I'm a pretty smart guy and I was wondering if its possible to major in a degree such as medicine or business and get a minor degree in acting/theatre? Whats the best way to approach this because if acting is too much of a long shot I don't know if I should go for it.

Quitting my job to pursue acting?

If you have an accurate enough understanding of what it takes to have a professional acting career, actually have acting talent and skill, and are making an informed choice - go for it. Just to make sure you do have a realistic understanding. While you can put 100% into acting - you may not always get the result you want. It is an extremely unstable career. Every acting job you get will be temporary, you'll always have to be concerned about when (and if) you'll get the next job. You may work steadily for a couple of years and then get nothing or maybe one job in the next couple of years. You may never be able to give up waiting tables for your entire acting career. Competition is fierce! You will be rejected far more than you'll be accepted, but you'll still have to remain hopeful. And the hardest thing is there's a lot of things out of your control.

I'm not sure it's enough to just not like want to work 9-5. There are several other options you have besides acting that are not 9-5 kind of jobs. I think you really need a passion for acting, I think you need to love the whole acting process - because really it's not as exciting as people think. It can be a lot of waiting and sometimes very monotonous and very frustrating. It requires a lot of preparation to find and do an audition . And you could do a killer audition, but if you don't match the picture the director has in their head or if you don't look "right" with the other people they want to cast - you won't get the part.

But if you have the resources and the talent to try and it's something you want to do - I think you should at least try. Check out the book "Acting as a Business" by Brian O'Neil. You'll need to understand the industry. Acting is a business. If you go back to school - consider acting classes or an acting school/program. You'll want good quality classes - generally something you'll have to audition to get in. Schooling isn't necessary, but it's helpful. You need to have some acting training to convince agents and casting directors that you know what you're doing and able to work at a professional level. Plus it's a good way to start to network and meet people in the industry to find out about opportunities.

Good luck.

Is my dream of wanting to become an actress stupid to pursue?

I am a nursing student at a 4 yr university. I'll be finishing that up for that will be my back up job. I really want to pursue acting...its been a passion of mine since junior high. In highschool, I was in a couple of theatre plays and my instructor has always said I was a natural. I'm not gorgeous but most people say I'm vivacious...I'm asian. I've told my parents and they are very supportive as long as I finish school. What do u think?

How can I actively pursue theatre/ acting while still studying it in college?

Yes, yes and yes! You need it. You need to explore what you want and the same time as exploring the new ground that your education is giving you. If a lecturer tells you stop exploring things outside of college, ignore them! I can’t be more passionate about this.It is one of the only times in your life when you can go out and make mistakes that don’t have a major impact on your career. Go out there, make mistakes and come back knowing that you’re not finished yet. You’ll always be doing this after college but it honestly is a place for learning and finding yourself as a theatre maker. If it is specifically acting that you’re interested in, this gives you a chance to experience working with other directors. In an educational context, you’ll usually only work with a handful of directors that all work together and (most likely) similarly. You’ll go out into the great unknown and feel like you’re starting all over again.Start now and make connections. It will be tiring and sometimes you’ll feel like you shouldn’t but trust me, only good will come of it.

Moving from New York to Los Angeles for acting?

Four years ago, I moved from Moscow to New York. Now that I am eighteen, I am about to graduate from New York Film Academy acting program. Now that I have a decent resume (I have lots of foreign training, one off- Broadway play and student films from NYFA), I am planning on moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. After conducting some research, I made a decision to study with Ivana Chubbuck and M.K Lewis in order to further my acting abilities and make contacts. I am planning on attending seminars and doing showcases to meet theatrical agents and casting directors. I have 8,000 and a car with me and I want to support myself by being a bartender ( I am in a process of getting my bartending license). Is there anything I need to be aware of? Any kind of help will be appreciated.

If I am an Indian and I like to pursue acting in Hollywood, is there any chance of me getting a lead role?

If I am an Indian and I like to pursue acting in Hollywood, is there any chance of me getting a lead role?My short answer. Abso-lutely. But, remember to chose the right path to achieve your dreams. You should understand the differences between the movie industry from where you come from, to how Hollywood works. Let's compare a few basic differences from a layman's point of view. Hollywood has hundreds of more releases to every Bollywood movie released. That implies there's a wider market for English movies. Also, the demand for quality acting is high. Take Bollywood vs. Hollywood Celebrities. You don't necessarily have to have degrees or have successful plays/roles before you make it big in Bollywood. You could become a big star by having the "right name" and good looks. Yes, there are actors who have struggled and made a name, but having godfathers in the industry plays a important role. Now Hollywood, look at famous actors and their pasts. Most have Degrees in acting, have a successful theater background, and/or have had breaks with small TV shows and so on. Also, (in my opinion), the average American, British guy looks as good (or is better in looks) when compared to many of the famous celebrities in Hollywood. The only thing that makes them a good actor is their acting skills. There are plenty of jokes on Nicholas Cage's acting, but trust me, he is better at acting than the average Indian movie superstar. (and Cage isn't a hunk). As I write this answer today most people would have had questions about a black guy playing a lead role in Star Wars, but guess what, he did ;). Everyone loved the Force Awakens and his character. So, if you want to get a lead role in a Hollywood production, work towards it. Take acting classes, become really good at acting, work in theaters, plays and what ever breaks you get. If you are good, you will get that offer you deserve :)Chance, no chance. Who cares. Give yourself a chance :)
