Just saw your question today. I am sorry to alarm you but this could be bad. You need to call the vet asap, tell what is going on, make an appt. What you are describing is a symptom of hyperthyroidism - common in older cats. A cat with hyperthyroidism suddenly becomes much more active, playful and often, more vocal. They usually sleep less, eat more, and lose weight. It can seem as if the cat is more healthy not less. If you do not get it treated it kills by harming the cat's heart and kidneys. The treatment is lifelong medication which is not expensive. Please, please, bring him to the vet as soon as you can and get his thyroid checked.
Why is my elderly cat not eating?

Peroxide is very drying. You want to avoid anything that will dry out the ear Because it can cause micro tears which can become infected, especially with mites. Oil coats the mites and suffocates them. Using baby oil is your best bet. It’s far safer than the options you get at the store for mites, but it does take longer. I’ve used it on an elderly cat we have. Don’t tell her she’s elderly! She’s still full of spirit and will claw my eyes out for even mentioning it! Baby oil, the same used for babies, only not scented, can be used in the ears. you use about five drop, rub the base of the ears to help it get into the little twists and turns in the ears, and then swiftly run from your cat to avoid any revenge. You can do this daily, and safely. Start with five to seven days. Use a cotton ball to clean out the icky black wax. Do not use a Qtip! It’s too easy to damage the ear canal if you aren’t seasoned with Qtips and quick kitties. Wait a week to check the ears. If you still suspect mites, another week of baby oil drops is absolutely safe.
Why does my elderly cat have a matted fur problem?
