Question About Ncaa Punting Rules

What is rules of a blocked punt?

In college football when a team gets a punt partially blocked, and the ball lands and hits a member of the return team (not the returner, one of the blockers) and then is recovered from a member of the punt team, who's gets possession of the ball?

What are the rules for the onside kick in professional football (NFL)?

The kicking team is under no obligation to announce that they are going to attempt an onside kick. In many cases, the intent is obvious, based on the game situation (i.e., a team is trailing late in the game) and/or based on how the kicking team lines up. But teams do occasionally attempt surprise onside kicks an unusual points in the game. The New Orleans Saints famously converted an onside kick to start the second half of the Super Bowl against Indianapolis in February 2010. The Saints were successful because the Colts had no idea the onside kick attempt was coming. The question contains an error, actually. On a kickoff, the kicking team can recover the ball as long as it travels at least 10 yards, full stop. If the kicking team kicks the ball to the opposing five-yard line, and the receiving team simply doesn’t field the ball, the kicking team can in fact run down and recover it as though it were an onside kick. Don’t confuse kickoffs with punts; on a punt, the kicking team cannot recover the ball and take possession unless the receiving team touches the ball first.

Can a muffed punt be advanced by the kicking team for a T.D?

It depends on a few things. Where is the muffed punt recovered, what has the ball done from the time it was kicked, and what rules are you playing under?

For example, in any set of rules, if the ball never crosses the neutral zone the kicking team can recover the ball (muffed or not) and advance the ball.

In HS rules, if the ball crossed the neutral zone after it was kicked, but was muffed and returned behind the neutral zone, the kicking team can recover and advance the ball.

In NCAA and NFL rules, once the ball is kicked and crosses the neutral zone, the kicking team can only recover but not advance the ball after it is muffed.

Of course, if the kick is caught or recovered by the receiving team and they fumble it, then the kicking team can advance the ball.

If the ball is never kicked, just dropped on the ground, then it is considered a fumble and can be advanced by either team.

Hopefully, this is not confusing.
