Question About Prepositions

Question about prepositions please.?

1. At the beginning of your lesson, ask the students to think about the topic.

Can someone help me please? Would "At" be the preposition or a adverb?

Prepositions IN vs ON - tricky question?

I've run into a problem:

"He'd never make it back in time"
vs
"He'd never make it back on time".

According to a dear friend, who is a native speaker and also has a doctor's degree in English, both can be used informally, but the "on" is the only alternative in formal/written expression. I agree.

But now, I'd like to add more details:

"He'd never make it back in time to see the show"
vs
"He'd never make it back on time to see the show"

Suddenly, the "in" sounds much better to me. However, grammatically/syntactically there is no difference in the use of this preposition.

Would "on" still be a possible construction, and/or could "in" be used also in formal/written language?

Please DON'T answer by "IN is better" or "ON sounds better" - I want qualified answers, no guessing or opinions, if there is anyone out there who can cure my insomnia caused by this issue.
