Question About Usmc Mos Choice

USMC LAV Crewman - 0313 questions?

Hi I was wondering about certain MOS's under the 03xx Infantry field in the Marine Corps. Right now I have a 'UH" Infantry Contract, so that means I'm guaranteed a MOS in the "03" Infantry Occ. field.

I know that when you get to SOI - ITB for your basic infantry training, you get to write a "wishlist" as to what specific MOS you want in the Infantry - Rifleman, Machine Gunner, Mortarman, Assaultman, Missleman, and LAV Crewman.

But my question is, can you put as your number one choice on your wishlist 0313 LAV Crewman????
Or are you just allowed to pick the basic ones like Rifleman, Mortarman, & Machine Gunner?

I ask because I have been looking into the 0313 LAV Crewman MOS, and it looks really interesting to me. I know you need to have a drivers' license and all that, which I am getting before I leave for
bootcamp this summer.

I have a few other questions too:

1. If I selected 0313 as my number one choice on my wishlist, what are my chances of getting 0313 if I want it?

2. What is the daily life like for an 0313 LAV Crewman while in the field/training? In garrison, and deployed on a MEU?

3. List the Pros/Cons of 0313 LAV Crewman and 0341 Mortarman

Thanks Alot!

USMC - Marine MOS's and Question?

You will get very basic combat training. All Marines do, regardless of MOS. The actual chances of you seeing combat are virtually nil. You will be most likely assigned a job far away from the front lines. If you were ever to see combat, it would be because the enemy has completely broken through the lines and has advanced all the way to the rear. In this day and age, that will most likely never happen. The idea that every Marine is a rifleman first is in reality an outdated concept. This was born of the Vietnam war. Back then, the enemy was everywhere, and no one was safe. Even in a rear area. Today, there are non-combat troops deployed with the combat troops. Look at the Green Zone in Iraq. There are civilians and lots of non-combat troops there. They are surrounded by lots of combat troops who do their jobs to protect them so that they may do their jobs. Everything we do in war have been lessons learned in previous wars.
Being a Machingunner in the Corps, I have had occasion to help cross train cooks, radiomen, truck drivers, and mechanics in the use of the machinegun. We fired live rounds over the heads of my buddies during live exercises. Believe me when I tell you this, I would never want to go into combat with someone other than a real infantryman. What it all boils down to is everyone has a job in the Corps that they are good at. I wouldnt make a very good cook or radioman, and they dont make very good infantrymen either. You will get crosstraining in infantry weapons and tactics but will in all likelihood, never get to put it to use.

USMC MOS selection??

Admins are turds. Just speaking from personal experience. If you want to be the scapegoat to every Marine who's pay ever been screwed up then you're choosing the right MOS. Go 0300 but I could be a bit biased speaking from experience as a 0311.
In regards to your question, you select the field you want (0100,0200,0300 etc) with your recruiter. Yes it is true that not everyone gets what they pick but 1) Those getting shafted are in the 3 percentile of all new joins 2) It's not automatically infantry. In fact 0300 field is one of the first to fill up so disregard the first response to your post.
ASVAB score and your ability to get a clearance (ie citizenship and a record) play a big role. Once you pick what you want and are done with boot camp you will get 10 days leave aka vacation. After boot you go to a school that will teach you how to be a desk monkey or infantry. I know in SOI (school of infantry) we made something called a "dream list" where you list what specialty you wanted in order. After a couple tests in SOI everyone was seperated by specialties.
In summary, ASVAB scores will get you the field and performance during the first part of your school after boot will get you the specialty. Hope this helps

USMC Officer MOS Question?

No such thing as the best MOS. Whats best is what best fits your needs and your personality.

I will give you an example...If I happen to think being an infantry officer is the best and if I recommend this to you, then what if you hate infantry type work? It wouldn't be the best MOS for you now, would it.

You need to look at what you want and what you love to do, then base your decision off of this.

Marine corps mos choices?

honsetly speaking as someone who served in a high speed lowdrag (sta plt) unit in the marines,i loved it and i thought that i was going to spend the rest of my life in that great gun club, but maybe you should get into anything to do with electronics or telecomunications cause if you dont spent 30 years in the corps you will have a marketable skill that is going to carry you into your civillan life.and let me tell you i loved geting dirty and all that other gung-ho type **** but its not for anyone who is looking for the wayout before they even finish recruit training so take a pouge job enjoy your time in the corps and carry on!!

hope it helped

Which USMC MOS should I choose?

From those three choices I would go with artillery.
The advantage is that everywhere you go so does the gun and the section chest.
this means you can take personal stuff, unlike the infantry where you are limited to how much you can carry.
Personally being in a tank is not something I would want to do, you make too large a target.
Infantry meany you are out in the sticks where people can shoot at you, and even though they will shoot at the artillery it is usually behind a berm and we had cover to protect us most of the time.

MARINE CORPS. mos question?

As stated by another poster "Security Forces" is not a specific MOS. After boot camp you will report to SOI = School of Infantry (East or West) depending on where you live geographically in the United States. Your primary MOS would be infantry 03XX. You will be assigned a "specific" MOS (0311,0352,0331,0341 etc..) while in SOI. Once you complete SOI you would report to Security Forces School for another designated amount of time (if you pass), then you are assigned a duty station (if you don't) then you will be assigned to FMF =Fleet Marine Force " Camp Pendleton or Camp Lejuene". Duty Stations can vary from being overseas or at some high-security installation (Nuclear Sub Base to Camp David it depends) through-out U.S.. Your term of service in Security Forces is for about 1.5 years to 3 years. Once that is completed you will get cycled into the fleet for your remainder of time.

The issue you have to make very clear if you do this, is that ON PAPER in writing you are guaranteed Security Forces (which may have monger enlistment req..may not) or else you are really just going into the infantry and thats it. Good Luck!

Questions on USMC Officer MOS's. Particularly Ground Intel Officer (0203)?

Hi folks,

I am going to commission in the mighty Marine Corps in a few short years and I have a few questions an Ground Intelligence (Intel) and a few other MOSs.

First of all I will tell a little about myself. I am 16 years old, male, and the son of a Major in the Marine Corps.

As I said, I'm only 16, but I am earning college credit through Clep tests and should have my bachelors degree when I'm 18. I am going to commission at the minimum age of 19. I am looking at a few seperate MOSs. The main MOS I'm looking at is 0203 Ground intel officer. I am fit enough to achieve a 290 PFT and qualify for a top secret clearance. So, my question is, what exactly does an 0203 Marine actually DO? There is sparse info on the Internet, but this is what I know.
They can lead a sniper platoon.
They can lead a Recon team.
They supposedly retrieve eyes on intel and can act as a sniper as needed.
But the thing is, I've never heard a person CONFIRM any of this. Do 0203 Marines ever see combat? Do they actually lead enlisted GRUNTS out in the field while on deployment? Do they (as I saw one person say) stay indoors and come back from deployments pale? There seems to be a lot of conflicting info on these guys out there. Any clearing up would help for leagues.

Now. On to Infantry officers. Info here seems more straight forward. But I want some confirmation. Do these Marines actually lead enlisted Marines on to missions on deployments? Or do they just sit at the FOB and brief the Enlisted folk?

I am a hunting, fishing maniac who is over expert with a rifle and pistol, and I'm an adrenaline junkie to boot. My dream job would be to be a combat diving, parachuting, green faced warrior. All the sexy Hollywood stuff. Any suggestions would be amazing.

Thanks!

By the way. I'm not here to be chastised on how I'm so young and don't know what I'm getting into. I do. I have lived on bases my whole life and have seen and had to deal with stuff most grown men haven't had to.

Can you choose your job in the USMC?

Depends on the need at the time, and your ability / test scores. If you research, and have a field you’re interested in,.. ask if it is available.WARNING: There are no guarantees.I tested and scored VERY high, so had pretty much an open book for anything that was available (needed). When I enlisted, I did not now what I wanted to do. I DID know what I DIDN’T want to do. I did not want to be ONLY Infantry, Artillery or Armor.Nothing against these fields, I just wanted some education that might be of value if I decided to complete only 1 enlistment.I was offered “Tech Skills” and a $2500 bonus for signing up so few restrictions on where they placed me. Note: This was supposed to guarantee not going to Infantry, Artillery or Armor only. Caveat: they did not tell folks was that they had to complete and pass what ever training they assigned us. If not, there was no bonus or guarantee.I survived Boot Camp, and was sent to 29 Palms MCB (aka The Stumps) for BEC school (Basic Electronics Course). The Marine Corps apparently sent all “Tech Skills” contracts to BEC,….. with a 50% fail rate. Thus wasting 3–5 months of the enlistment, but saving them $2500 per man, and allowed them to send you anywhere they wished,… after you failed.I passed, was assigned then to go to “Hawk Missile tech training”, BUT was asked to remain on as a lab instructor. I was later, unknown at the time of volunteering, given my choice of speciality schools in return for staying.Again not knowing what I did want,…. I only knew I didn’t want Crypto. I expressed this, and was promptly sent to Crypto school, lol. (Sgt. Major asking us was a Crypto tech,… thought I would be a good fit, and I did leave it to him to decide where i should go). Ended up being a pretty decent gig.

What MOS do you think would be a good choice?

Im already active army, but have only been in the military for 3 months. Currently I am a 68D (operating room specialist). I was thinking about changing my MOS once I am able to. I do know that all MOS's are just as likely to deploy as any other, but thats not what Im concerned about....I dont mind the idea of deploying. So anyways, I need an MOS that doesnt require hours of standing, because I have been having lower back and problems with my left leg (pains shooting from my upper leg to lower). So...if you have some nifty ideas for MOS's that females are qualified for...I think my ASVAB score was a 55? and my GT score was 99 (whatever that is..but i heard someone talking about GT score before).
