Question About Vietnam War Deaths

Did the government use taxis to send death notices to families during the Vietnam war?

Back before the Causality Assistance Program the notices came by telegram (Western Union). Western Union paid taxi companies to deliver the telegrams. Some drivers quit rather than do it.

Why did the US have so many casualties in the Vietnam War?

"Hannah" -- the Second Indochina (Vietnam) War lasted from May 1954 (if you use the start date used by many historians) or from November 1955 when the first US military advisers were sent to Vietnam. US "Combat troops" were sent to Vietnam in April 1965 although the Navy and Air Force were already active well before. The was ended on 4 December 1975 when the Pathet Lao took Vientiane, Laos, not when the PAVN/NLF took Saigon, Vietnam on 30 April 1975. The war in Cambodia finished on 15 April 1975 although US marines fought and died during the Mayaguez Incident at Kompong Som, Cambodia in May 1975. SO, the war lasted 21 years 7 months.

Korea was only for 3 years one month (25 June 1950 to 27 July 1953).

Why did so many American troops become casualties? --- There are several reasons.
a) The US troops were trained for large set battles against large force units in open area warfare. They were not trained for battles against small force units using hit and run guerrilla tactics in jungles, rice paddies and rubber plantations.
b) The US troops were fighting against local people with local knowledge of the area whereas the US troops did not know the areas they were fighting in.
c) The US troops were mostly "draftees" who mostly did not want to be in Indochina. They were poorly trained and poorly led. They were fighting against local people who had a reason to fight, the idea of "freedom and independence" and the wish to overthrow a corrupt military dictatorship installed illegally by the US government in 1954.

The US had the weapons and technology, including planes, and because of that they won the battles on the ground. The PAVN/NLF had the men and "will and reason to fight". The world was condemning the US involvement and the PAVN/NLF exploited that viewpoint in the worlds media.
