Question About Working In New York

New York City Resident Tax Question?

Please answer if you actually know something about taxes in the State of New York. I work in New York and am occasionally paid for freelance work by third party payroll companies.

A recent job, back in 2017, took place in New York City. New York City resident tax was taken out of the check, the problem being that I'm not a resident of New York City, but rather a resident of the suburbs outside of it. I contacted the payroll company, located in California, and they said they would correct it, and told me to submit form IT-2014 (Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate) which is used to verify that you are not a city resident. I did this and a refund check was issued to me for the tax taken out.

When I received my W-2 a couple of days ago it was screwed up. Box 16 of the W-2, which would be for state wages, was blank, no state tax indicated. In Box 19, local income tax, the original NYC tax amount was listed. In box 20, which is the locality name, it said "New York City Resident."

The problem here is that I don't want to put anything at all in the NYC resident section of the NYS tax return, IT-201 since I'm not a resident. I called the payroll company and at first they had know idea what I meant, then seemed to get it and indicated they were going to correct it and send a new W-2. Do they now have to re-report all my info?

Any help is most appreciated.

USPS ISC question and working hours?

Hello everyone! I ordered an EMS packaged via Korea this week. Today it was updated that "ISC NEW YORK NY(USPS) Processed Through Sort Facility, Your item has been processed through our sort facility in ISC NEW YORK NY(USPS) at 2:19 pm on May 22, 2015"

I read that ISC doesn t work on Saturdays & Sundays + On normal days, they end their shift at 4:30pm. My question is, will my package be sorted and given to USPS to deliver tomorrow? Because I know USPS works on Saturdays.

I just want to know if my package will arrive tomorrow, or on Tuesday (Since Monday is Memorial Day).

How much tax do you have to pay for working in New York and living in New Jersey?

I'm gonna give you a broad strokes answer because taxes are ever so unique to each and every person. I work in NYC and I live in New Jersey and so generally, whatever taxes you paid in New York City and New York State through your employer, it may be fully credited to New Jersey, meaning, you pay nothing in taxes as New Jersey will credit the taxes you've already paid.Of course, that's just the most basic answer that is generally and factually true.

Minimum wage increase in New York question?

So New York State got minimum wage increase from $9.00 to $9.70 an hour. I work at five below, which is based out of Pennsylvania, so I was wondering if I actually will get this raise. The reason I ask this is because for other things, five below does not obey the rules of New York State. For example, I only receive ONE half hour break for working a shift of 5.5 hours or longer, no matter how long it may be.. despite New York laws requiring more breaks than that. If someone could clear this up for me it would help a lot! Thanks!

Do you have to work in New York to be an investment banker?

There are definitely other branches of the bulge brackets around the USA. For example, I'm in Chicago where the big banks and most Ibanks in general tend to focus on Industrials. In Texas, a lot of the big banks have their groups that focus on gas and energy. Likewise, on the west coast, a lot of banks tend to be focused towards technology.

Do you have to live in New York City to work for the New York Times?

You don't have to. For one thing, there are many bureau locations around the world, so many employees more or less can't, particular correspondents. As for production jobs and so forth, it depends on what department. I worked in development, and there were employees who didn't work in New York, so it can happen.I would recommend working in New York if you possibly can, though. It's an experience, the Times building. The elevator rides can be pretty interesting. You get a sense of the energy. Also, rumors that the Times is like Kings Landing (Game of Thrones) are pretty accurate.Basically, if you just want a job, for this company, you don't have to be in the city. If you want to get ahead, you probably do. I get not wanting to move to New York. I almost had a nervous breakdown moving in, and it is bonkers nutso expensive. But there's nothing else like it, and you should try it at least once if you possibly can. That's just my opinion, though.

How would you describe to living and working in New York City?

Busy. I've never thought about or cared about money as much as I do here in my life. I've also never known so many people who readily accept money as a major part of their lives. Part of that is moving here in my late twenties and being ready to build a life, and part of that is the cost of living "well" is so high. In San Francisco the cost of living is also high, but the cost of living "well" is lower than NYC. To compare, apartments seem smaller in New York, it takes longer to get anywhere (than in SF), having a car is tough, even having a bike is not easy. The view isn't beautiful in a lot of the city. Funny thing though. It's all forgivable for me. Maybe it's the strange legitimacy of New York. It's so diverse that it just feels like no one has to assimilate (I'm sure that's not really true, but it's probably more true here than anywhere). The huge potential of New York, or the history...something makes me okay with a little suffering.I never thought of myself as a New York kind of person, but I may never leave. Since that's the case, I have to find ways to make more money. I had no trouble finding work here, but I can't speak for that in general.

Why doesn't my gps work in New York?

So I was in New York a few days ago and when I was in Manhattan I tried to get to times square. My cars gps, my galaxy s4 gps and my friends iphone had the same problem. The gps would tell me to go the opposite route then halfway go another direction. Could this problem happen because I was roaming? Or is new York that big that it causes gps's to break?

Where can a 14 year old work in new york?

You're actually of legal age in New York to work, but you're going to need to get Working Papers from your high school/middle school. The only problem about working preferences is that you are not allowed to operate any kind of machinery as such, which means you can't work in places like McDonald's and Starbucks. You may be able to work in a small restaurant or something like that. Also be aware that stores like American Apparel and clothing stores in general will not hire you also, as their minimum age is usually 18. It's pretty limited until you're 16, so if you can wait until then, maybe they'll be an even better computer coming out, and you can probably pay for the whole thing yourself if you're patient.
