Question about newborn puppies...?
My Shih Tzu had pups in January it was her first(and last) litter. She had five pups. Because it was her first time I stayed with her all night. She started whelping at midnight and the last one was delivered between 5 and 6 am. Keep your girl as comfortable as possible and change her bedding after each whelp. After she has spent a little time with the pup, help her clean it. I used a clean dry towel to clean our puppies If you have a heating pad cover it with a clean towel put it in a clean kennel, the pups need to be kept warm just like human babies do. It is important to supplement your dogs diet while she is nursing the puppies. I fed mine a good puppy food along with her regular food the whole time she was nursing. It is also important to be sure she gets a calcium supplement every day. Get her and the pups to the Vet ASAP. This will insure that both mom and pups stay healthy. You won't have to ask when is a good time to play with the pups. They will just eat and sleep for the next two and a half weeks and then they will start getting more active. Oh btw change their bedding daily, don't let them live in their waste. Good Luck!!
What price should I purchase this mutt for? And other puppy questions.?
They're shepherd/lab/rottie puppies. The guy with the dog who got knocked up (He's not a breeder) is asking 250, but I think I could ask for as low as 150, or does that sound too low? I know, I know, adopt mutts from shelters, but I want a young puppy that I can train and raise around my family. Call me selfish and cruel but I'm sticking with my decision, I wouldn't want to adopt a rescue dog that has even the SLIGHTEST little sliver of risk of hurting my little siblings. I'm sorry, I just couldn't imagine anything happening to them. Also, do you think they'll get as big as I hope? How would I pick the one I know would be the biggest? I'd want a companion as well as a semi-guard dog. I live in a big house, on a reserve and there's a lot of scary guys who'd try to take advantage of a 15 year old girl walking alone at night, trust me, it's scary. He'd be inside mostly, only when I have him, but outside in the yard for up to 5 hours a day while I'm at school. (Or inside in a room I've already made up for him with pee pads, a bed, and food/water) I'm going to devote the rest of my day to training, exercising, and spending time with him, he'll be my big lapdog, and since I run a lot he'll fit right in:)
Some questions about puppy diarrhea?
I have a 3 month old basset hound/lab mix. He has been an extremely active and silly puppy since I got him. He has had 2 rounds of vaccinations so far and will be due for his last round next week then his rabies soon after. I am a very paranoid animal owner. I have 2 ferrets that I was told by many sources can eat any cat food. I researched it on the internet and found that it is absolutely horrible to do that...I lost one of my ferrets to that fact so now I worry very much about all my animals diets and behavior. My puppy was on beneful given to us by the previous owner. After I took him in he had soft stool but it wasn't too worrying. I figured he was just nervous with his new surroundings so decided to wait until he was comfortable and his stool hardened up to change his food. Within a day or so his poop was normal. About a week ago I changed his food. I bought avoderm for puppies. I mixed the two foods over a few days and then ran out of beneful so had to start feeding him the avoderm completely. Yesterday his stools became really soft and now today it is like watered down pudding. However he is acting just as he always has and running around the room as I type chasing the cat. No difference in anything but the stool. His gums are pink. His skin in loose. He doesn't feel warm. However he does get the hiccups a lot. I know he does not have parvo so please do not write any responses like "take your puppy to the vet NOW or he will DIE of parvovirus." My questions are is avoderm a safe and good brand to feed my dog? Would the food change most likely be causing this? If a puppy gets diarrhea from a food change how long will it last? Is the pudding like stool actually diarrhea or is it soft stool? If avoderm isn't a good food brand what are your recommendations for a good dog food with a decent price?
Weaning puppies (from earlier question)?
Generally, the mom starts the weaning process at about 4 weeks so the breeder needs to start giving the litter puppy gruel. But the weaning process usually takes a couple of weeks before the mom's done weaning them. Puppies, except toy breeds, are usually weaned by about 6 weeks, but that doesn't mean they're ready for new homes yet.

hi, i have a boxador (boxer/lab mix) he is a runt he's about 15lbs and he's 4 months old i think he is a runt i only saw 2 other puppies from his litter but he is sooo sweet and i have another dog too who is my mom's but this one's mine he is a brindle but i think he could be a small portion of great dane in him is this possible? he has long legs with huge paws and huge ears and also if you have a boxador please give me some info and tips! =)
What are the questions to ask when buying a puppy?
Ask to see the mother and father if possible. Are these dogs healthy? Do they have any behavioral problems? A good health guarantee should be provided. They shouldve been dewormed, vaccinated and examined by a vet. There should be paperwork for this. How were these dogs raised? Are their surroundings clean? Ask if there are any hereditary diseases in the line. (Hip dysplasia) A good breeder will allow you to spend time with the litter to pick out the puppy you want. You should feel comfortable asking the breeder anything regarding the dogs and if there are any future questions to call them. Also ask what they feed and recommend you feed them. What happens after you get home and for whatever reason puppy isn't a good fit, what is the breeders return policy?It's also a good sign when the breeder asks you alot of questions regarding the pup's new home. To see if you will be a good fit with the dog and its breed characteristics.No puppy should be sold EVER before 8 weeks. It is illegal in CA, and most others I believe.And, if your looking for a family dog, look for the well socialized animal that is curious and people friendly. Especially if you have children. Ask around and do your homework. Ask the breeder for good references. Dont be shy. Your going to have this dog for a long time and your most likely paying good money for this animal. (And if your not, theres another red flag.) Everything should be in writing and in the contract.
