Help! Questions on The Scarlet Ibis. Need an answer quick?

1) This story takes place during the carnage of World War I. It is about a brother that is trying to make his younger sibling more like himself(what else is war usually about, but attacking a country because it is not like your own). It shows the danger of attempting to do so.

Doodle is compared to the scarlet Ibis, both find themselves in hostile environments that they cannot survive in. This could be seen as a comparison between soldiers that die in unfamiliar lands because of the war.

The theme of Brotherhood is also very apparent in the short story. Doodle is very reliant on Brother. He has a fear of being left behind by Brother(and in two instances calls for him not to leave him behind), and since the story takes place during WWI these words have a stronger meaning. It is vital for soldiers to have a strong sense of Brotherhood. A soldiers life often depends on his fellow soldiers , the betrayal of a fellow colleague could mean life of death on the battlefield. In a broader sense, the carnage of war can often make people more aware of the need to embrace brotherhood of all mankind.

2)Brother hurts Doodle b/c of his pride. He cannot fully appreciate Doodle for who he is(until he loses him), and therefore tries to "fix" his Brother. I also believe as a child, Brother does not fully comprehend just how delicate Doddle is. You can tell the grief is genuine, b/c he finally "gets it" after Doodles death.

3)I do think the relationship is realistic. He is like most people that do not appreciate what they have until it is gone.

Quick 2-3 sentence summary of scarlet letter???

unmarried woman gets pregnant and is therefore an adulteress. the town ostracises her, especially because she does not reveal the identity of the baby's father. she is consistently chastised as a sinner and the whole time the baby's father is the priest, who deals with his guilt by self mutilation.

the book basically demonstrates the repression of puritanical culture and the how society conditions behaviour. everybody lies. basically, people in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones.

Scarlet letter... who is the leech? why is he called that in the title of the chapter?

the leech is chillingworth. leech was a common name for a doctor in those times! but it's ironic becuz chillingworth is also sort of like a leech on dimmesdale.

In "The Scarlet Letter", was Hester Prynne's affair consensual?

Was Hester Prynne's affair with the minister consensual (meaning they both wanted each other) or was she pressured/raped?

In The Scarlet Letter, why does Dimmesdale feel guilty?

I must admit that it has been a few years since I've read The Scarlet Letter, but I shall try my best to answer your question. Hopefully it will all come back to me :)Dimmesdale feels guilty because he is the cause of Hester Prynne's public punishment and her societal dismissal. Because Hester and Dimmesdale live in a small Puritan town where everyone makes it their business to ensure that everyone's decisions lead them to heaven, it is a huge deal to them that Hester would get pregnant without being married. (*Spoiler Alert*) It is an even bigger scandal (though the town's people don't know) that her lover is their Puritan minister, a man who has vowed never to marry or have relations with a woman: Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale probably feels even guiltier when he is the one chosen to question Hester about who her lover was, so that the lover too may be punished. How ironic! So, we have Dimmesdale sweating up a storm as he questions the woman he loves, while Hester astounds everyone by refusing to confess her lover's name. She is punished and essentially thrown out of town while Dimmesdale resumes his daily life and is still trusted by everyone in the community. Can you imagine the town's people gossiping among themselves about Hester's actions whilst within hearing range of Dimmesdale? No wonder his guilt and anguish literally killed him in the end.
