What are your goals for Ramadan?

I’m so excited to work on not complaining and being physically healthy!I hate hearing people complain but someone really wise once said to me that we find faults in others that we, ourselves, possess. I thought about all the things I consider pet-peeves and noticed that I do a lot of them!I mostly complain in Ramadan. Hangry Mina is not fun. I’m in a constant state of being hungry, tired, thirsty, and frustrated. Ramadan is supposed to be a spiritual journey to better yourself as a person. The last couple Ramadans I’ve had, I’ve just been trying to get over the 30 days and call it a month. This year, I want it to be meaningful. I’m not saying that I want to pull a 180 on my life and become Gandhi or anything. I just want to work on my mental and physical health. Mental, by seeing Ramadan as an opportunity and not a burden and physical, by staying healthy and not stuffing everything I see in my mouth as soon as the sun goes down.Happy Ramadan!

What is the common reaction when people see a woman with hijab in your country?

Obviously, wearing hijab is much more accepted in Muslim countries than in non-Muslim countries or in countries historically with a large Muslim population while it’s not as well-received in Western Europe and North America in comparison.Well, in Canada, in Quebec the majority have a negative view of it. In English Canda, the majority don’t, but close to half don’t see it in a positive light. At least, I read that somewhere. 63% of people in Quebec think it shouldn’t be worn if you work for the public sector. Maybe 35% of Anglo-Canadians think that way. I don’t what polls show in America, but I would say it’s similar to what exist among Anglo-Canadians. I would say the majority of Americans have no problem with it, but easily over 35% don’t like it. Democrats in the US are more accepting, in general, when compared to Republicans.Canadian anti-Muslim sentiment is rising, disturbing new poll reveals - Macleans.ca

Do Muslim women wear bra and panties under their burka?

First of all burka is not something that most Muslim women wear, it is found only in some regions of Afghanistan and neighbouring regions. If you mean niqab or chador, they wear regular clothes underneath, which are sometimes very fashionable and only displayed in private, with female friends or family members.Sorry to disrupt your “Thousand and One Nights” fantasy.

Why is scarf accepted in the West for nuns but not for Muslims?

Please read the whole answer before passing judgmentSimply put, nuns are perceived as having chosen their profession, thus their uniform. Muslim women are perceived as being forced to wear hijab. In western society people have nearly no restrictions on what they should should wear. Many people put a lot of effort into composing their outfits and use their clothes as a form of expression and a way of showing their personality. At the same time, westerners are comfortable in tighter fitting clothing. From a westerner’s point of view, Muslim garb can be seen as lacking personality and restrictive.Another important thing about western perception, when you say “hijab” most people think:This seems very dull, and oppressive to a westerner. The stereotype of Islamic society is that men control the women, so this additionally comes off as extremely insecure. On a deeper level, the reasoning behind dressing like this, even from the Qu’ran, aside from showing piety to Allah, is that it protects women, which perpetuates rape culture and victim blaming — women are at fault for putting themselves in danger and men are simply animals. This is demeaning to both men and women.A minor side note, in the west people don’t cover their faces unless there is a really strong wind. Faces are a quick, simple way to identify people. Some people might see the acceptance of burqas as a way for someone to be sneaky, rather than a sign of piety. In any case, most Muslim women do choose to dress like this, because they believe in the piety.Back to my point, most hijab are more like this:Tasteful, capable of expression, functional, and at a glance, most westerners would think nothing of it.In summation, westerners have no problems with this:NIGHTMARE FUEL!Because westerners know nuns chose their profession. They have problems with hijab because they equate it with a burqa (beside the point, I know) and westerners assume women are being forced to use it rather than choosing to wear it on their own.
