Ramadan; Muslim Women; How Does It Feel When You Wear A Burka Or A Hijab

Do muslim women wear a burka at home? how about when they sleep?

I am a muslim and I fast in Ramadan, I have read the Koran...I have strong faith in God.
But I do not wear Burka or abaya or whatever because these are traditional dresses not muslim...like the Sari in India or the Kimono in Japan.
Muslim women are normal women you know!!! I am a med student and smarter then most other people will ever be....I'm not an alien or an object!!!!!!!
Muslim women who wear the Hijab do so in public in front of strange men, that's all...and there are muslim women who don't wear the Hijab by the way or who chose to wear it because it is Allah's will not because anyone forced them to.

Is there any muslim woman who wear a headscarf or hijab?

Salaam!

I'm currently studying medicine and I wear hijab. I have had no problems with it all! Alhamdulilah I had 5 universtiy interviews and I got accepted at all of them, so that just shows that hijab is no barrier! My mother is a senior scientist and she also wears hijab.

Go for the career that you love!! There's no such thing as the 'easiest' career. Do what you feel you will be best at, and enjoy. Don't think of the hijab as an issue, put your faith in Allah and everything will work out for the best inshallah!

Is it necessary for Muslim women to wear the hijab? If so, why? What if they don't wear it?

Hijab is a universal idea of standardizing the criteria for Modesty of Women and men alike. It’s a wide concept to standardize a women appearances applicable to all phase of life mother, sister, fiancee, wife, daughter etc.A hijab is a veil worn by some Muslim women in the presence of any male outside of their immediate family, which usually covers the head and chest. The word ḥijāb in the Quran refers not to women's clothing, but rather a spatial partition or curtain. When used in the context of women, hijab in Quran means modest dressing to protect women’s dignity and assurance of protection. The term can refer to any head, face(optional), or body covering worn by women that conforms to a certain standard of modesty.Terminology wise, Hijab can also be used to refer to the respectful seclusion of women from men in the public sphere, or it may denote a metaphysical dimension, for example referring to "the veil which separates man or the world from God".Most often, it is worn by Muslim women as a symbol of modesty and privacy. According to the Encyclopedia of Islam and Muslim World, modesty in the Quran concerns both men's and women's "gaze, gait, garments, and genitalia."The Qur'an instructs Muslim women to dress modestly. However, questions like, The type of veil? Amount of covering?, Face to be covered or left open ? etc. depends on wide variety of cultural, social and personal aspects and there should not be any concrete rule governing them.Below picture depicts the cultural variations in hijab worn by muslim women in various parts of the world.Hope the above explanation clarifies your query upto satisfactory extent.

Why is the burka niqab hijab liberating for Muslim women?

There is nothing liberating about hijab. Women/girls are hurt and killed because of it. Some are forced to wear it, even non-Muslim women are in some countries such as Saudi Arabia. Why do you think hair is a sign of beauty but a woman's face is not? There are hadith that say only eyes should be shown and to the extreme, only one eye should remain uncovered.

The verse about veils came because Muhammad's men were looking at his wives, especially when they were answering the call of nature. Also, they were alowed to have sex with the slave and captive girls, so the Muslim women needed to be covered so the Muslim men would know they were off limits.

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 4, Number 148:

Narrated 'Aisha:

The wives of the Prophet used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqia at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. 'Umar used to say to the Prophet "Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam'a the wife of the Prophet went out at 'Isha' time and she was a tall lady. 'Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda." He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes).

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 395:
(I have shortened this hadith to show only the relevant part)

Narrated 'Umar (bin Al-Khattab):

My Lord agreed with me in three things: --------

1. I said,"------

2. And as regards the (verse of) the veiling of the women, I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! I wish you ordered your wives to cover themselves from the men because good and bad ones talk to them.' So the verse of the veiling of the women was revealed.

3. Once the wives...

Is it ok for a man to wear a burka or hijab?

Well, first I would like to to say that I admire the fact that you are open minded [from what I can understand]. I am a Muslim female. I wear the shaila [hijab] but not the burka. I come from the UAE, and here it is mostly the elder women who prefer to wear the burka. As for a male to wear the burka in public, I wouldn't say I have ever seen a man wear it, but from my experience with people here, some of them would see this as a joke, some might see this as an offense, and some might see you as a person who is trying to accustom with our culture. But since it is a female attire and not something men wear in our culture, it would be something strange to see. Islam forbids men to act like women and women to act like men.

As for the hijab, it is ethically wrong for a man to wear it, as it is seen as trying to imitate a woman and dress like one, where in our culture is seen as a sin to 'be' like a woman. Also here and in most of the middle eastern countries, the men wear what is called a ghatra [known as a white piece of material that goes on the head and is fitted in place with the 'agal'- {a sort of black rope}]. For more on the clothing in the UAE, you can check out this website:

I can see that you are trying to find out how wearing some of the attire can be seen as right and that you mean well. But as I mentioned above, ther are alternatives for men trying to be modest. I just thought I'd give you a little insight. Hope I helped.

P.S. In other countries around the world, people seen in a black hijab or a burka are usually seen as 'terrorists' or are discriminated. We are trying to get the message around that people in black does not mean anything. There are several reasons that we wear black. One of them is that it is dark so that nothing under the black is visible to others. Anyways, check out more websites and hopefully you will find an answer to your question.

Why aren't men wearing burkas and hijabs?

Sonja: How is a beard like a hijab...which covers the hair?

@ Lioness: Sure, some of the men wear head gear but they're not required and before you say women aren't required lets see what happens to a woman who walks around in public without any headgear.

@ Murray: That's discrimination.

@ Reema Sunni: That's just stupid.

@ Happy: We give everyone equal chance to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't affect other people.

Can a Muslim woman wear a niqab during the month of Ramadan?

The word hijab loosely means (barrier) and that means from head to toe except face and hands.Wearing hijab is all about piety and virtue, it comes from within and from conviction, as for the age old answer is it mandatory? The question is NO it’s not, it’s up to the persons discretion, culture and tradition, and understanding of what’s it like to be a Muslim and her role in being good.In the Arab world was a safety and caution measure concern pre-Islam, to prevent strangers from (sizing you up), and no women like being in that position, and women today likes to be respected for their mentality and hijab cuts the road short for men who only judges women from the looks alone and treats them according to that. Plus the coming of Islam telling the prophets wife’s that it’s better for them to prevent them from being harmed, maybe it’s because them being the prophets wife’s (a high status) or because of security in that society at those times a safety measure for them, but it was not mandatory. So there are lots of wemen wearing hijab and it’s not stopping them from doing what they want any how, so wearing a hijab is a remember for wemen that out in public they are to act according to what’s good for them in the long run, Ramadan or not.But that does not mean walking naked, because our normal cloths we wear are a hijab from nakedness, it’s just some to take it too loose and consider short shorts a hijab or tight cloths a hijab, and that gives the meaning of ( clothed and naked) which is basically tempting and defeats the porpuse.Different societies have different versions of hijab all covered or half or just the head scarf.
