Really Painful Braces Elastics

How to ease the pain of elastics for braces?

Once you wear then contunuosly for a while , they wont hurt. Its because you can take them out that you do. Think back when you first got your braces on and they hurt, if you could take them out yourself everytime they hurt, you would. Over time you got used to the braces and they dont hurt anymore, just the same will happen with the elastics if you leave them in. Just think of them as not being able to be removed and after a few days, they wont hurt :)

How can I treat pain caused by my braces' elastics?

You can use regular painkillers. The same you would use for a headache for example. But don’t expect the pain to go away, specially if it is very strong. You should always give feedback to your dentist with the amount of pain you have, and he will prescribe the propper medication. If it hurts too bad, he probably went a little too far tightening the braces and elastics. The problem is that it will not hurt that bad at the time, it starts to ache about 1h later.Freezing cold water also helps. I use to keep a huge glass in my desk and drank it continuously to soothe the pain. I never liked to take meds.

pleaseeeee give me some insight!

How long does the braces pain last?

It varies because each orthodontist works a little differently. Some use more pressure than others. Also, patients vary in their sensitivity to pain. But generally, I have found that after a few days, the pain diminishes and disappears. Some patients never have pain. Also, as treatment progresses, most patients tolerate adjustments with less discomfort than at the beginning of treatment. What I mean is that after about six months into treatment an adjustment is easily tolerated that would be very painful if done in the first week of treatment.

I just got elastics for my braces. Is it normal to experience excruciating pain once I put new bands in?

I’ve never had elastics, only the usual wires and BOY DID THEY HURT!  Okay, maybe I was, and still am, a pussy, but after they were placed for the first time, I couldn’t eat anything solid for over a week. I survived on yogurt, milk, juice and soup. Even the pressure of my lips over the teeth was enough to cause a steady stream of pain (in addition to the dull constant pain). Plus, this happened at the start of summer break and my most favorite hobby at the time was snorkeling at the beach. I was all gloomy because of the pain but once we got to the beach the day after getting braces I began to cheer up. Ate my yogurt with fruit bits, put on my flippers, my nose plug, my water goggles… then I tried to get the snorkeling tube in my mouth! For those who don’t know, the snorkeling tube goes partially into your mouth and is held in place by your clenched teeth. I cried for the rest of the day, because the most vital part of my snorkeling gear was suddenly causing me excruciating pain! I couldn’t eat and I couldn’t snorkel, my summer was officially over! I sulked for most of the next 3 months… And the worst part was that every time it began to feel alright, I had to go to the dentist change the wires or replace a fallen bracket and THE PAIN WOULD COME RIGHT BACK!!!!!! Worst 2 years of my life.

My rubber bands for my braces really hurt the inside of my mouth. Help?

So I just recently got a new formation of rubber bands in my mouth for my braces. The last six weeks was just one rubber band on the right side. But now I'm required to wear a square on my right and a triangle on my left; which are pretty close to the front of my mouth, and it looks like I have really big lips when I wear them.

Anyways, I haven't been wearing them as often as I should. When my orthodontist first gave the rubber bands to wear, I did, but never wore them the next day because they hurt my mouth so bad. The rubber bands must have been rubbing my mouth as I slept. Not only the part where it stretches from the hook to the other hook, but also the hook itself, is what's giving me the pain and "indentions" on the inside of my cheeks.
So I took a break from them for about 2 weeks, until my mouth completely healed. Then I put them on again 2 days ago, and it created the similar pain again. I remember my orthodontist telling me to wear them no matter if it hurts. So I wore them to bed, which only made it worse. I wore them yesterday for about 3 hours after I got up, then wore them last night. Still the same pain. If I keep wearing these rubber bands, will my mouth get used to them over time?

In the meantime, is there anything I can do to stop the pain? I've tried salt water, and it doesn't really work for me.

How do you deal with pain from power chain braces?

Felt compelled to contribute as the only answer was ‘nothing’Do not despair, and have faith in painkillers. Just in case you are wondering which of the many types of analgesics you should place your bet on, a metanalysis conducted by Sandhu et al, 2017 suggest that popping Etoricoxib (Arcoxia) before and after that dreadful dental appointment would be most effective. But before you do, check you medical history and make sure you aren’t allergic to NSAIDs and ask your doctor. Also, piling on soft wax on your braces helps would really help in getting use to your braces. You would most probably wean off all that wax in a month.Dislodged wires are also a common source for pain, if so visit your dentist (or snip it off first with a wire cutter/nail clipper if you are really desperate)And the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide if all that pain is worth it. Mind over matter.

How do you treat pain produced by the rubber bands in braces?

The other answers were really good but I'd like to add that some pain is normal and should go away. Excessive pain is not normal and should be brought to your orthodontist’s attention immediately. If your orthodontist does not satisfy your concerns, consult another orthodontist immediately.

How much did or do braces hurt based on your personal scale of 10?

I have braces right now so I can pretty much tell you that.Placement- 0You won't feel a thing during the placement of braces. It's going to be completely painless procedure. So my answer would be zero. You might feel a little discomfort because of the presence of foreign object in your oral cavity but pain won't be there. After 5–6 hours= 8.Now you'll start feeling pain. Initially, it would be mild, let's say 5. But with time it will increase.Next 24 hours= 10.Next 24 hours are going to be the most painful hours of your whole orthodontic treatment. You won't be able to bite anything. Teeth will be extremely tender. Forget biting, even a slight touch of your tongue will cause pain. You'll be advised to take analgesic for that. You'll have to rely upon liquid diet entirely. You might even regret the decision of undergoing this treatment but trust me, it's totally worth it.After 48 hours= 8.Now you'll feel comparatively better. You can eat semisolid stuff. Teeth are less tender now. You might notice ulceration on oral mucosa because of the braces and wire. And that constant irritation causes more pain and discomfort. You’ll be advised to apply topical anesthetic get over that area. After 72 hours = 4–5.You'll be able to bite and chew with mild pain. After one week = 0–1.There won't be any pain. You'll get used to it. You won't feel any discomfort. After 20 days= 0.Only mirror and toothbrush are going to remind you that you're having braces.First wire tightening= 7–8.Pain is going to last for hardly 1–2 days. And then slowly with time, you’ll get used to it.You are never going to regret this decision, trust me. Go for it. All the best.
