Reason For Using Deforestation For Harvesting Timber

Why don't deforestation industries re-plant the same or higher number of trees that they cut down? Is it so expensive to plant a tree in a deforested area?

It depends on where the logging is occurring. In the US, many states have laws that state that an acre of trees must be planted for every acre harvested. Over-all, if the land is public land, closer to 1.5 acres are planted for every acre harvested. However, that only pertains to public land, not to private land.It is quite expensive to replant and in many areas, it is almost impossible to do so. In part, this is because of terrain. In part, it is due to lack of roads. During the Clinton administration, rules were put into place that prevented the building of new forest roads or maintenance of old ones. The result is that it isn’t possible to get in to some places to replant.Add to that the fact that nature does a huge amount of deforestation, too. This year was a bad fire year in the US and over 9 million acres of forests burned up in fires. If this had happened in the 1970’s, they would have already had replanting plans being worked out. However, the same reason that so many of those fires burned so huge and out of control now prevents that land from being replanted; lack of roads to get to where the trees need to be replanted. Even if we started reversing those rules now, we have nearly two decades of neglect to overcome, so it will be a while before roads are put in.The US Forest Service and many companies like Weyerhaeuser still replant hundreds of thousands of acres of trees every year. It might be surprising to many people, but there are now more trees in the US than there were in 1800. More needs to be done, but bad policies need to be removed and good forest management needs to once again take place.

Forests: What are the causes of deforestation?

The major causes of deforestation :-Growing population is the main cause for the deforestation. It needs more space for residential use .agricultural activities are one of the major factors affecting deforestation. Due to overgrowing demand for food products, huge amount of tress are fell down to grow crops and for cattle gazing.Logging: Apart from this, wood based industries like paper, match-sticks, furniture etc also need a substantial amount of wood supply.Wood is used as fuel both directly and indirectly, therefore trees are chopped for supplies. Firewood and charcoal are examples of wood being used as fuel..Forest Fires:- Another example would be forest blazes; Hundreds of trees are lost each year due to forest fires in various portions of the world.

How deforestation can be checked?

Controlling deforestation
New methods are being developed to farm more intensively, such as high-yield hybrid crops, greenhouse, autonomous building gardens, and hydroponics. These methods are often dependent on massive chemical inputs to maintain necessary yields. In cyclic agriculture, cattle are grazed on farm land that is resting and rejuvenating. Cyclic agriculture actually increases the fertility of the soil. Intensive farming can also decrease soil nutrients by consuming at an accelerated rate the trace minerals needed for crop growth.

In the People's Republic of China, where large scale destruction of forests has occurred, the government has in the past required that every able-bodied citizen between the ages of 11 and 60 plant three to five trees per year or do the equivalent amount of work in other forest services. The government claims that at least 1 billion trees have been planted in China every year since 1982. This is no longer required today, but March 12 of every year in China is the Planting Holiday. In western countries, increasing consumer demand for wood products that have been produced and harvested in a sustainable manner are causing forest landowners and forest industries to become increasingly accountable for their forest management and timber harvesting practices. The Arbor Day Foundation's Rain Forest Rescue program is a charity that helps to prevent deforestation. The charity uses donated money to buy up and preserve rainforest land before the lumber companies can buy it. The Arbor Day Foundation then protects the land from deforestation. This also locks in the way of life of the primitive tribes living on the forest land. Organizations such as Community Forestry International, The Nature Conservancy, World Wide Fund for Nature, Conservation International, African Conservation Foundation and Greenpeace also focus on preserving forest habitats.

How can the government help control deforestation?

By controlling and regulating lumber, the Government can order trees to be planted and protected, while other trees are harvested. Forestry Management is a Canadian specialty and can help build and sustain the natural resource and ensure that it is sustainable.

What are 5 cause and effects to deforestation in Honduras?

Causes:
Land for roads, expansion of towns/cities, peoples houses
Land for graizing animals
Slash and burn style small agriculture for subsistence farming
Land for large scale cash crop farming
Clearance to use wood as a resource and sell.
Illegal logging of hardwoods to sell

Loss-
Loss of biodiversity - less species.
Animals loose habitat.
Loss of traditional living areas/ hunting areas for indigenous people
Increased risk of soil erosion.
Increased threat from flooding.
Increased amount of CO2 released due to the land use change (large forests are a CO2 sink and store carbon, cutting the forest will result in its loss)
Poor soil quality after deforestation.

Is deforestation mainly done in order for development?

Agriculture. In the equatorial countries of South America, acres upon acres of rain forest are clear cut in order to provide room for modernized and unsustainable agricultural practices.
