Reasons A Hamster Would Itch A Lot

Do hamsters itch a lot? (clean and scrath themselves?

Hamsters do groom themselves quite often and they can scratch, but they are not usually obsessive "itchers".

What kind of bedding do you have in the cage? Cedar is a HUGE no-no for animal bedding, cedar oil is actually toxic to rodents (stores sell it because it smells strong and covers animal smells). Use Aspen, Yesterday's News or corn cob instead.

How long have you had the hamster? It might be fleas, lice or ringworm (ick ick and yuck!). There are medicated baths you can use to treat all of them, so if it is not the bedding then it might be worth a trip to the vet to make sure it is not something contagious.

My dwarf hamster wont stop itching!?

Pine is FINE for hamsters (unscented). I bet he has gotten some mites from the bedding or food from Petco. CLEAN out his cage very well, boil or microwave everything you can. use white vinegar to disinfect. Powder him down with a flea powder that is safe for 4 wk old kittens. Repeat these steps each and every week until clear. Adams makes one flea powder that is safe for 4 week old kittens.
Another thing that can make (dwarf) hamster itch a lot is too much corn in the diet.

Why is my hamster itching? PLEASE HELP!!!!?

My Syrian hamster (nibbles) has been itching alot recently. she rubs herself up against the bars of her cage and rolls on the floor in corners of her cage sometimes. She also scratches herself with her legs and bites her self. We recently moved her into a different cage because she seemed unhappy and bored in the one she was in. the cage we moved her into was used by my sisters hamster that died about a year ago. The cage was thoroughly cleaned but she started itching while in there and looked distressed so we moved her back but before we changed cages I bought some chinchilla sand that said it could be used for hamsters on the front and I wonder if that's it and she had an allergic reaction or if the other cage had something like mites in it. please help because I hate to see her suffer!!!
p.s my parents say there's not point going to a vet.

My dwarf hamster keeps on itching!?

I got a Russian dwarf hamster today, i saw her in the pet shop yesterday and i fell in love with her shes so cute! I got the cage ready and picked her up today and shes now in her cage. I did notice her itching in the pet shop but i thought nothing of it. But over the last 30 minutes i've had her here, as shes on the wheel shes itching if she eats she itches. I though it could be the wood shavings in the pet shop cage, or the food she was having in there. I guess i will have to see what shes like in a couple of days. The food i give my hamsters is Burgess Supahamster dwarf hamster food and the bedding i use is carefresh. She also has a dish with chinchilla sand in it. she lives by herself.
Hope you can help me
Thanks
:)

Why does my hamster keep itching himself constantly?

I have a male Teddy Bear hamster that I only got about a month ago from PETCO and he keeps itching his sides and head constantly! I can't figure out why! Today, I had him on my bed and he was itching his sides with his back foot and when he would stop, he would rub his sides against my leg, or something close by like a pillow. I'm getting kind of worried. The best thing I can think of is that he can have fleas(because his cage stays in my garage, and when I hold him, sometimes my dogs like to come sniff him and stuff. They're outside dogs just FYI.) I've also noticed he cleans himself way more than my sister's hamster, which she doesn't do any of these things. IDK if I should take him to the vet or to PETCO to get it checked out or something. HELP??

What are some common signs that a hamster may be dying?

I have had experiances with six Winter White hamsters in my lifetime, and recently had one pass away to old age. Here are some signs that's she's reaching past her prime:1) Most Winter Whites live between 2-3 years old. Most of them don't start showing physical signs of growing old until they are a year and a half old. Your hamster, not even being a year old yet, shouldn't appear elderly, rising some concern.2) Their fur appears more ragged, ruffled and unmanaged when they reach their later years. Your hamster's silky smooth coat shows that she's still young and in her prime.3) They itch themselves a lot more, often leaving bald spots, red spots, or even bleeding. 4) Older hamsters have an almost grumpy expression, and often loose the light in their eyes to cataracts. This can lead to blindness. Your hamster appears to have very bright and happy eyes.5) They walk funny, almost clumsily, and exercise less, taking more time to rest.Your hamster looks fine from the picture, but if she is starving herself and refusing water, she could be sick. I would take her to a small animal vet to see if they know how to help. Finally, if she is developing a lump, definitely watch it and have a vet look at it. I've had a Winter White that developed a cancerous tumor, which ended up growing to be larger than her, before she eventually passed at around a year old.

My new hamster keeps itching and cleaning itself?

So long as there is no hair loss or excessive itching, it should be fine. Hamsters can, however, suffer from mites which leads to tons of itching. They can also get itchy skin from too much corn in their diets. If you're feeding a loose diet, take any corn out of it and see if that helps.

My hamster keeps itching himself?!?

Does his skin look irritated or is any of his fur falling off? If you see either of those happening take him to a vet immediately. He could possibly have an infection or mites. He could need medication prescribed. But if neither of those symptoms is happening then he Is fine. Hamster tend to itch, lick and wipe themselfs a lot to keep clean. It's very normal all my hamsters do that every single day. Hamsters just love cleaning themselves that all. No need to worry. It's kinda like how cats do that. Also don't give a hamster a bath ever. You will accidently wash away his natural oil on his skin a fur.

Why does my hamster keep scratching itself?

It's natural, he's just washing himself. If he uses his back legs, he's scratching, if he's using his front legs he's washing.
This is NORMAL, go read a HAMSTER BOOK to see the BASICS of hamsters.

Why is my hamster shaking, itching, gagging, and sleeping alot?

Take your hamster to a veterinarian, and find out. Don’t ask people on the internet to diagnose a sick animal. As a pet owner, you have accepted responsibility for the care of your pet. Your legal responsibilities, at least in most countries, include providing an appropriate environment, appropriate food, and clean water. You are obligated to keep the animal and its habitat clean, and you are obligated to provide medical treatment if the animal falls ill or is injured. It does not matter whether the animal is a $3 dollar hamster or a $3000 dollar prize dog. The obligation is the same. You may choose to have the vet treat the animal, or euthanize it, but it is illegal (as well as unethical - in short, CRUEL) to fail to provide vet care when you are aware there is a medical problem.
