Notifications for severe Rainfall/Thunderstorms or extreme Heat is something I'd like have in my weather app (would likely increase daily active rate without annoying users with useless notifications). Share your App, I'd like to take a look at it.

(I misread this question and thought it was only asking about Android.)If you're an Android user...It really depends on what your top priorities are for a weather app. For example, I really value hourly temperature and precipitation forecasts, and that's kind of hard to find sometimes. I also want something that can show me an animated weather map on demand and also lets me choose the weather station closest to my house. For me, the best one is BeWeather & Widgets Pro. It has lovely looping video for different weather conditions, and it just generally looks nice. (I've never used their widgets.)Here it is with the details turned off:Tapping on the bottom of the screen makes the details appear in one of three modes: ten-day forecast, hourly forecast, and sun/moon info.Here it is with the hourly forecast displayed:Note the timeline at the bottom that shows precipitation and temperature variation throughout the day.The video below is from a much older version (2011), but it gives a hint of how beautiful this app is. Well considering the booming IT industry the world over, I presume there must thousands of weather apps in the iOS app store. While there may be tons of weather apps residing in the iTunes store, there are only a handful of these which are able to serve the purpose well for which they are specifically designed. I believe that the first and foremost characteristic of the best weather app for iPhone and iPad is to be able to provide accurate, reliable and timely weather forecasts. This is the primary function of a weather app and an app which fails to accomplish this task properly is of no use. Good weather apps should be able to provide severe weather alerts, satellite and radar maps and other such attractive yet extremely useful features.

Is it a good idea to build a weather app?
Indeed, there are a lot of weather apps on the App Store. It looks like every single week, a new one comes by and after being inexorably reviewed by bloggers who call it "The One", it starts to crumble after a few weeks and no real user growth. Federico Viticci of MacStories always reviews interesting news ones but states his boredom because there are a lot. Most of them are paid and offer an original UI, so you don't want to place your competitive advantage exclusively on the interface. Propose something new, feature-wise; one idea might be to change the way people interpret the data they see on the app.You fear that there are too many already; that's not only to be considered as a problem, it's a good sign of the market; it means people want weather apps. Even though people complain about the number of new weather apps, and rightfully so, the reality is that they still buy them. You have nothing to lose: as Tan Rezaei said, the risk is low. The costs are, too. So if you have something original, with a clear distinctive feature which makes the experience better, go for it!
Why does the weather app not recognize my home location? I use Windows8.?
Well mplsjj, in order for the weather app to recognize your home location you have to tell it where you live. Now don't go and get all excited, you do not need to provide your address, just a zip code(postal code) or your town's name and that should be sufficient. I always use the location of two towns over and 99.99% of the time that's good enough for me. Good Luck, keep cool or warm(whichever suits your current needs), keep your chin up and may the sun always shine upon your day. EDIT: I checked both weather apps that I have in my Windows 8 desktop using your zip code and both said to try a different location. So with the Weather Channel I used Minneapolis,Mn rather than the zip of 55419 and the weather conditions and forecast came up without a problem. I tried again typing in Minneapolis in the regular weather app and again the current conditions and forecast came up. So I tried your zip code in Google Earth and at street view it showed Blue Cross animal Hospital and Edina Realty across from Subway on Lyndale Ave South. As to why the weather applications will not recognize your zip code I don't know unless it was a recently cut from a larger zone. So when you try to set up your location rather than use your zip code type in Minneapolis,Mn and that hopefully will get you where you would like to be.
