I understand theres mulitple branches and sub-branches of Asset Protection in Target, but as far as a regular Unarmed Security Guard job, what are the requirements? College? Age?

In California, you have to be licensed through the BSIS — Bureau of Security and Investigative Services — this is how you get you “Guard Card”.Most states have similar licensing requirements.In California, you must be 18 years or older to be licensed. In addition, there are California Department Of Justice and FBI background checksanor; any felony will disqualify you.Any violent crime will disqualify you, even if it’s a misdemeanour.In California, there is an 8 hour class that you must take beforehand, which can be completed in one day. Amusingly, it’s divided into a very basic section regarding the law — “Powers to Arrest” — and a second section on “Weapons of Mass Destruction”.I say “amusingly” because there’s not a change you are going to be able to disarm a fuel-air explosive, or deal with a Sarin attack after an 8 hour class.Presumably, you will then be able to pass the BSIS written test.After that, you are fingerprinted at any LiveScan location.And then you can submit your application to the BSIS, which is part of the California Department of Consumer Affairs.After you get the card, there’s an additional 32 hours of education; usually, this is a 4 day course. The first two days are mandatory, and the same everywhere:Public Relations — how to relate to your customer or people in the communityDocumentation — pretty much: require ID, and write everything downCommunication — what you should and shouldn’t say to be clear in your meaningLegal and Liability Aspects of being a guardThe other two days generally have some electives; some courses are offered by companies that don’t cover enough electives for them to be “elective” — in other words, you get what they have available to give you.Once issued, a California “guard card” is valid for two years, and must be renewed to remain valid after that.
Requirements to become a mall security and how to ?
As a former mall security officer i will tell you do not get a job working mall security. It's a very degrading, low wage, dangerous job position. Your expected to provide security to a whole mall and shoppers with little to no training, no self-defense equipment, and no real authority. I worked for about a year in mall security and hated every minute of it. The job is very pointless and stressful at times. Also you'll respond to incidents, knowing you have little to zero protection. Mall management could care less about it's employees including mall security guards. Even the police that was stationed at our mall thought of us as a joke. Most malls also operate segways now, do you really wanna ride that around and risk liability and be mad fun of at every direction. Also their is a lot of liability in the job, they pretty much make you sign contracts saying the mall won't defend you at all. Like you, at age 18 i wanted to get a job in mall security. little did i know how stupid and pointless the job was. If you want your guard card chances are it's directly processed through your state police dept, so check with them or search it on google. try any other field, mall security is the most degrading!
How do you become security at concerts? What are the requirements?
It largely depends upon the venue, some places use in-house security people who are on a call list and do this type of work as a part-time second job. Other venues will use contract security from a company, this job may provide more and different opportunities for work, possible even full time. Generally, this is considered an entry-level position in the security world so the requirements are set low. Often, being 18 years old, with no felonies is enough to get work. Unfortunately, the pay is often low too, but you get to watch a lot of free shows which is one main reason why people take these jobs. Plus, you may get treated from time-to-time to meet the performer, receive autograph’s or picture’s.I recommend this type of work to mature young people as it is good real world training for life. You’re going to have to deal with rudeness, intoxication, medical emergencies, domestic disputes (many couples get in fights at concerts), regular fights, and different demographics of people that aren’t your friends. This may sound imposing, but that is where the greatest lesson of this kind of work provides is teamwork. At large venues, while this job entails responsibility, there is a large “safety net” of other professionals to back you up. Police, Paramedics, other experienced security/safety personnel, etc are there so you’ll never have to deal with a difficult situation alone, but you get to learn alongside in the heat of the moment as issues unfold. Lastly, it beats flipping burgers.
