Rn From Usa To The Uk

How can I work in the USA as a registered nurse?

Take the NCLEX which is a licensing exam. Every state has their own board of nursing examiners, applications are available online for some of them. Some states require a pre exam called CGFNS to determine if you have adequate command of the language. Both exams are computerized and sometimes you can take it at satellite exam centers in different countries. Good luck!

Is the UK better for nurses to work in than the US?

That depends on the value you place on dozens of different things. However, strictly with respect to comp’n the median salary of an RN in New York City is $81,000. For nurses with specialty skills (eg operating theater, ER, Ob Gyn) the median is in excess of $100,000. More if you speak Spanish or Mandarin.

Are nurse salaries in Canada comparable to US nurse salaries?

In Canada, while the quality of living is higher than in the U.S, it still manages to have approximetly the same (and sometimes lower) cost of the living when compared to the U.S on average. Places like Vancouver have a higher cost of living, while Places like Edmonton, Calgary and Suburban Toronto have lower costs of living than the U.S on average. In Alberta, the minimum pay for new registered nurses is $40.48 per hour for Psychiatric Nurses and $40.94 per hour for Nurse Clinicians, while nurse specialists have a minimum starting pay of $46.99. Graduate Nurses with a temporary permit holder (waiting to be registered) are paid a minimum of $36.20 per hour. However, the minimum pay can be as high as $57.94 per hour for 2000 paid hours a year, depending on what position you have and type of nurse you are.Alberta Hospitals in major cities, like Edmonton and Calgary, pay 15% to 25% higher than the minimum rate, with minimum wages being between $44.90 for newer or administrative nurses to $69.52 per hour for more experienced nurses, nurses working in ICU/ECU and ER Nurses. This is of course the minimum spectrum pay, with pay increases of ~$1.10 to ~$2.00 per hour per year on average. Outside of major cities, the minimum starting salary is still at $72,400.00 which is still quite a good starting salary if you ask me, especially considering most of them are recent graduates between the ages of 22 and 24.Those salaries range from CAD$89,800.00 to CAD$149,040.00 per year starting, and generally max-out at ~CAD$203,000.00 for ECU/ICU, ER or Specialty/Instructor nurses, and/or Intenstive Care Oncology Nurses with 8-9+ years of experience.A friend of mine finished her studies and has recently become a fully certified RN, and has recently accepted a position working at a children’s hospital (eventually transferring to a new Youth Psychiatric Ward in the next couple years) where her starting wage is $45.10 per hour with a guarenteed 2,000 hour annual pay, expandable up to 3,000 hours, meaning she’ll be paid about a minimum of $90,200.00 annually and if she chooses to work the additional 1,000 hours up to a maximum of 3000 hours, she could be paid some $135,300.00.In the rest of Canada, salaries generally start around $63,000.00 to $79,000.00 and go up from there, usually maxing out at ~$108,000.00 to $150,000.00 with 9+ years of experience, depending on your position and location.

Can Health Care Assistants/ Assistant Nurse's Work in the USA ?

Probably not. There has to be a big demand, which there is, and not enough US citizens to take the jobs, which there isn't. You also have to be licensed by the state, so you would need to check requirements for the state you want to go to.

The most you could do is maybe travel with someone from Britain to the US as their aide.

You could try finding a hospital willing to try to get a work visa for you. They have to advertise the job for a month and if no US people apply who are qualified, then they can try for a visa for you. Most employers don't want to bother, it's too expensive unless it's for a professional and that position is not considered professional.

(In the US it's called a certified nursing assistant or nursing assistant certified - CNA, NAC)

Note, if you come to the US on a fiance visa or with a green card, then there are lots of jobs for CNAs.

The work doesn't pay that well for living here either, which is why there are lots of jobs.

Less competitive nursing schools in USA?

Lauren,

With the downfall of the economy and the massive loss of jobs, nursing schools across the US are flooded with applicants; both those right out of high school and those making a career change. In very low-populated states, you might find that their state universities don't have waiting lists (which is indicative of being very competitive for admission) , but usually states such as those (I'm thinking like North and South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming), usually only have a few nursing programs per state (usually one or two at the state university and one at the major cities' community college. Start looking at each state that appeals to you and see what the state's website has as far as a listing of state colleges and universities. You don't want to spend your settlement on a private college tuition, nor do you want to rack up a ton of student loan debt. Also, keep in mind that less-populated states are going to have less nursing jobs, so if you go that route, you might need to relocate after graduation.

Can I register as a nurse in the USA using a BSc nursing degree from outside the USA?

I earned a B.ScN from University of Windsor in Ontario.  I was allowed to take my Michigan boards, passed, and have been an RN in Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois.  For foreign graduates, you must contact CGFNS (Commission of Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) to meet requirements for English language proficiency, among other things.  Here is a link:  Foreign Educated NursesGood luck!!!

If you receive your RN or BSN in The United States, can you move to The UK and still work as a nurse?

While I've yet to work in the UK as an RN, it's something I would be incredibly interested in! My first clinical instructor in nursing school worked for several years as an RN in England. I was also fortunate to precept a student nurse from Norway who was studying abroad in the United States. While nursing care in the UK is similar, there are some huge differences as well. In her school, the nurses were not taught to use stethoscopes! In any case, there are several agencies in the UK that will provide you with all the information necessary to begin working there. Here is one of the agencies' websites: http://www.continentaltravelnurs... This company provides RNs with assignments in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and England. Good luck!
