Rock Bands I Should Know

How do I start a rock band and what should I do?

You start a rock band by just starting it. That’s pretty much it.But be sure that you can play an instrument, preferably the guitar, drums or bass. A keyboard would work too.If you cant play an instrument at least be a good singer. If you cant do any of those things, find people who can do that, group them together, find similarities in their taste for music, their music philosophies and motivate them and form a band. There you go, you just formed a band without even being a member on it.Its not as difficult as it sounds, read how iconic bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC-DC and the likes were formed, they were a bunch of stoned teens who cranked tunes in their basements with no clue as to where they wanted to see themselves, 5, 10 years from there. But one thing they did have was a very pure, very natural inclination towards music, specifically towards rock. They just kept building on it.

Which rock bands do you recommend?

I have tried and failed to get the "Zeppelin Feel" in other bands, they are a class apart. :)A few come close though and are not s famous as well. I am not mentioning the bands like Deep Purple and CCR as people already did that.I will stress Pearl Jam though, they are simply amazing!1) Black Country CommunionJason Bonham is a part of this band, that is as close as you can get to Bonham's drumming. They have a definitive "hard rock and bluesy sound", kinda like Zepp but not quite there :P2) The Winery Dogs They are the super trio.. go look at the band (its star studded), they bring out the good old rock and roll and awesome guitar solos, hard hitting baselines and amazing drumming(it's Portnoy :P). 3) Band of JoyThat is what Robert Plant is doing and we should respect that, you can definitely see the rock god image in this classic roots band. Good Music4) The Temperance MovementNice Blues Rock Band, just coming up!

Good underrated rock bands?

Jethro Tull

Not terribly underrated. I just don't think people like progressive flute driven rock solos. lol

If you've never heard of them, here is a really good song by them.

This one actually has no flute in it. But listen to some of their other songs, like Locomotive Breath. That has a flute in it.

This one is just good rock. I present to you my good friend... Aqualung

Is it hard to form a punk rock band?

It's really not difficult to form a band in ANY genre. What's way more difficult is forming a GOOD band. Even a genre like punk, which is noted for the simplicity of the style, is remarkably difficult music to play correctly because many musicians really want to put more musical information in than is really required.

So, in short, here's my advice to start a decent punk band (assuming that by "punk" you mean something that sounds like the bands you referenced):

1. Find a guitarist who can play rhythm really well, and doesn't get too hung up on playing leads. However, if they're going to bother with solos they should at least be good enough to carry them from start to finish. Also, they should have an amplifier with a good-sounding overdrive/distortion channel, or at least an effects pedal that'll get that sound.

2. Find a bassist who can keep up with the guitar player. Again, someone who hasn't been playing for too long is probably good because they won't overplay, but they need to be able to add little melodic flourishes in between the chord changes so that your songs sound coherent. Also, they have to keep up with your super-fast drummer (see number 3 below) so make sure they can play fast, and probably with a pick rather than fingers so the notes are defined and loud.

3. Find a drummer who can play cleanly at high tempos. When I say fast tempos, I mean take out a metronome and set it to anywhere between 140 and 170 beats per minute--THAT fast. It also helps if the drummer has a strong sense of dynamics, meaning that they know how to vary from loud to quiet and back to loud again within the space of the same song.

If you pull a lineup like this together and spend a few months writing and rehearsing, you should be pleased with the results. Use your local Craigslist.org "musicians" page to look for players with similar interests, or post an ad of your own.

Good luck, and have fun!

Who are some awesome southern punk rock bands?

What are some underrated rock bands that I should listen to?

I’m gonna say Klaatu. They have a Beatle-esque sound on four of their five albums, with the odd one out sounding more like a Cars album. This sound was so similar, in fact, that people thought Klaatu was the Beatles in secret. This wound up hurting them when the secret got out, but they produced some of the best albums of the 1970s in my personal opinion. I would suggest listening to the four Beatle-esque albums, which are:3:47 EST or Klaatu (the US title), their debut album. The album was the spark of the Beatles rumor. The first track, “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft”, was covered by the Carpenters.Hope, a concept album which is hailed as their best. Now, the original 1977 version is fantastic, but I would also recommend listening to the version on the Sunset compilation album, as this one is the first version the band recorded before Capitol (their label) made some changes to it.Sir Army Suit, their third album. Like 3:47, it has many tunes that wouldn’t be out of place on a Beatles album, and this was the first album where the band comes clean as not being the Beatles.Magentalane, their fifth and final original studio album. This one is along the lines of the first three song-wise, but if you want a physical copy it will be a bit harder to find (being a Canada-only release). Now, I’m not going to suggest you listen to Endangered Species, their fourth album and the one that sounds like a Cars album (I’ll leave that one up to your discretion), as a lot of the band’s tracks were overdubbed by studio musicians at the request of Capitol. However, this band is heavily underappreciated and worth a listen in my opinion.

Do you know Australian alternative rock band The Church?

I do know the band, and have even met all former and present members except for their original drummer Richard Ploog. In fact, I just saw three performances of theirs this week on their U.S. tour.I liken them as the Mystics of Rock, as their name would imply. Their lyrics and sound aesthetic is transcendental, intellectual and well… mystical. They are also one of the most underrated bands in history, around since either 1979 or 1980, and one of the most prolific bands with nearly 30 albums. I can hear their influence, and the trademark “sound” that they occupy, in so many bands that came after them. Yet, the Church had that sound first.I definitely recommend exploring their entire repertoire. They will grow on you in ways you never expected.

What are some good rock bands that every rock lover must listen to?

In order to truly call yourself a fan, you have to listen to rock music from all the periods. So, the essential bands/artists list start from decades ago and slowly work its way up. Elvis Presley*Chuck BerryBuddy HollyThe Beatles*The Rolling Stones*The WhoBlack SabbathRamonesAC/DC Journey*U2Bon Jovi*Nirvana*Alice in ChainsPearl JamSoundgardenGuns N RosesGreen Day*Linkin Park* = most essentialThere's so many more bands to list, but no modern band is really an essential until they've released a minimum of 5 full length albums in my opinion.
