Whether you need a visa or not depends on where you're from and whether you want to work. If you are not an EU citizen, it would be illegal for you to work here without a visa. If you were from Canada or Australia, there's a working holiday visa that is available if you plan to stay longer than 90 days. IThere is no working holiday visa for US citizens though. The overall expenses for my 4 bedroom house outside Denver and the small one bedroom apartment I have here are about the same. Rent alone is over 600 euro per month. Short term rentals are likely to be more expensive. I spend about as much on food here as in the US.
