Safe Sedative Besides Valerian

Can you get high off Valerian Root?

Hi i have recently been experiencing a lot of anxiety. I've been reffered to a psychiatrist but im not into all of that medication as i know benzos can be quite bad for you. I have heard taht valerian root can really help with anxiety. The only thing im concerned about is if that this natural option can still cause "high like" effects. What im asking is if valerian root can produce "highs" equivalent to xanax/valium/klonopin etc. and if so how much would it take to feel those effects. If anyone has any other options other than valerian root please share because im not looking to get "high" off of it. Thanks.

What can I use to sedate a feral dog to catch him?

I would not recommend doing this. If the dog is wild enough to need to be sedated to be caught you shouldn't be messing with him. What business do you have with the feral dog? Is he terrorizing your farm and you need him removed? There are many organizations that will take care of animals in this situation. It might be that you're trying to save a dollar by doing it yourself, but you run a high chance of getting both you and the animal seriously hurt.Is it that you're hoping to catch him and keep him as a pet? Again, if he's too wild to befriend without sedation, I think it goes without saying; that's probably not going to work out.Call your local vet or animal control center and see what they have to say- all animals, and especially feral animals will react strongly if humans try to capture or control them against their will. It's not worth it to get you or him injured. Let the professionals take care of the situation.

Why does excessive valerian root use induce insomnia?

Valerian is a sedative herb that has been used for centuries for the treatment of insomnia. Because valerian increases GABA levels in the brain, it helps reduce brain activity and allow users to fall asleep more easily. But to cure from Asthma permanently you need medicationBoth non-medical and medical treatments available for sleep problems. Medical treatment includes various prescription medicines as well as over-the-counter or non-prescription drugs. Some people prefer complimentary and alternate therapies for managing their sleep problems. Relaxation training including muscle relaxation, breathing exercises, meditation and techniques to alter behavior and habits related to sleep cycle are helpful. But a more recent method that is becoming popular is “Halotherapy” or Salt Therapy. A more cheaper and sustainable practice for gaining full benefits of salt is by use of salt lamps. How Salt Lamps Help to Cure Insomnia & Sleep ProblemsNature creates negative ions to counter positive ions . The negative ions increase the oxygen supply to the brain thus creates alertness of mind and reduces lethargy and anxiety. Although nature is producing negative ions but our modern lifestyle is producing a lot more positive ions than can be managed by nature. We need to supplement the negative ion production to help stay healthy, both physically and emotionally. This is very easily done by keeping salt lamps in our homes. The salt lamps work on the principle of hygroscopy. The bulb inside of the lamp heats the salt crystals. The mild heat of the lamp, evaporate the water and during the evaporation process the negative ions are formed to combat the positive ions by binding to them. The salt lamps liberate negative ions that help us relax and reduce sleep problems by creating a peaceful environment for sleep.

Is there some snack or drink (besides alcohol) that I can consume to relax?

You might want to try a traditional herb called "Kava". It is an ancient, safe and effective herbal supplement that has been in-use in the Pacific Island for over 3000 years."Kava can ease anxiety and put you in a calm and clear state of mind. For many, kava works as well or better than a doctor-prescribed anti-anxiety medication. You won't experience any of the lethargy or confusion common with those medications, either, since kava doesn't contain benzodiazepines."More info here:- Kava | Kava Root | Kava Kava | Buy Kava- Kava- Kava Kava - iHerb.com- Alcohol and Other Drugs- The Effects Kava Gives | About Drinking Kava Kava- Effects Of Kava Kava

Are Over-the-counter sleep aids safe for someone who is taking antidepressants?

Use the Drugs dot com interaction checker - its difficult to say since there are many types of anti-depressants and many types of OTC sleep-aids. In general though, I’d expect there to be additional sedation if using an SSRI with something, like say Vistaril (hydroxyzine) or something like Benadryl (Diphenhydramine), even. For herbs like Valerian, there are a few reports of unfavorable interactions and one case report of Serotonin Syndrome - which can be dangerous. However, generally the risk is lower with things like Valerian and there are also many instances where serotonin syndrome did NOT occur with Valerian and SSRI’s.If you are on a “stimulating” anti-depressant than you are less likely to have side-effects from combining the two - with one exception; I believe that due to the anticholinergic effects of various sleep aids, the combination of them with something like Wellbutrin or Atomoxetine may increase the risk of an abnormally fast Heart Rate (called tachycardia).Your best bet is if you need a sleep-aid, stick with simple things like Melatonin (5mg) and consult a Physician if you have any worries. Besides, many natural medicines even can interact so you could try Valerian and then forget you drink Grapefruit juice at one point, and all of a sudden you’ve ingested the necessary triplet to send you to the E.R!Sources→ Is It Safe to Use "Natural" Sleep Aids While Taking Antidepressants?→ Dietary and botanical anxiolytics → Cardiovascular effects of bupropion in depressed patients with heart disease. → Anticholinergic syndrome and supraventricular tachycardia caused by lavender tea toxicity.→ Managing Anticholinergic Side Effects~Dan Gregory of Area-1255 NeuroScience Blog: www.area1255.blogspot.com

I was prescribed trazodone for a sleep aid. I would have wanted a low dose ambien. What is your take on this.?

Let me start off by saying I worked evening shift for many yrs--and the night shift for over 10 years. Sleeping during the day is not always easy.

Now, as you may know Trazodone (Desyrel) is a tetracyclic antidepressant used to treat depression and anxiety disorders. Perhaps the doctor who prescribed it is under the assumption that you have depression? Anxiety? or both.
Now a psychiatrist is the specialist who would be the one to diagnose that--not a family doctor.

Some doctors feel that Ambien is addictive. Some use restoril or a low dose of a benzo (klonopin or ativan). Unfortunately, benzos can be very addicitve as well.

There are 3 things natural sedatives (besides benadryl, which knocks me OUT);

Valerian
Melatonin and L-tryptophan (which is also found in milk and turkey).
You could try one of those.
best wishes

Is there any supplement or herb similar to Xanax that I can take instead that works almost immediately to calm my anxiety and relax me?

Good suggestions so far. And I absolutely agree that anxiety should be managed by treating the underlying cause, rather than with specific nutrients to mute the symptoms. That said, it can be incapacitating for many, so finding acute relief while the investigation into underlying causes happens can be critical. If I were to pick my top supplement for fast-acting anxiety relief I’d go with GABA or it’s cousin, phenibut. The former is said not to cross the blood brain barrier when taken orally. Given the sometimes dramatic reduction in anxiety some patients get with it, either it is a very powerful placebo, or it is making its way into the brain.Phenibut is GABA that is modified just a bit so that it readily crosses the blood brain barrier. It has been studied more in Russia than in the US, but results are impressive for a wide range of conditions, ranging from anxiety to addictions. The nice thing about both of them is that they will generally go to work within about 20 minutes of taking a dose on an empty stomach.GABA is easily obtained OTC. Dosing can range from 100mg to 500mg. Phenibut is also available to the public. I strongly recommend using either of them in conjunction with a practitioner familiar with their use, but I would especially recommend that regarding phenibut.
