How does Samhain differ from Halloween?

Samhain differs from Halloween in its origins, for one.Samhain was a Celtic holiday for honoring the dead, celebrating the end of the harvest season, and a time when the Druids believed the line between dead and the living blurred. They used to light bonfires, offer sacrifices, and leave treats outside their doors to appease angry spirits.Halloween got its name from the Christian Holiday, All Saints Day or Hallomas.Kids go trick or treating and people decorate their homes to look like a haunted house. The similarity is the costumes people don. On Samhain, Celts dressed in animal skins to hide from the spirits that roamed the earth. On Halloween, people wear costumes because it is part of the Halloween tradition.Read more facts here. 110 Halloween Facts and Myths You Never Knew About

How do Wiccans celebrate Samhain? Why do they celebrate Samhain?

SamhainThe final harvest Sabbat, Samhain, corresponds with the period of the year when the last crops are gathered and put into storage for the cold winter months. Samhain arrives at the time that the Western World calls Halloween. The God makes his ultimate sacrifice during Samhain. But fear not! His sacrifice is made willingly. He does it for his children. The God’s sacrifice is represented by the final harvest being cut down so that we may have food to last through the winter. As mentioned before, the song “John Barleycorn” illustrates this sacrifice. In the past, at this time of the year, the cattle and pigs were culled. Only those that were strong enough to live through the harsh winter months were kept alive. The meat of the livestock was salted and cured to provide sustenance to the people during the long winter.Samhain is also known as the witches’ New Year, an idea that came from the Celts. The Celts understood that this time started the beginning of the year. Why? Because they believed a person’s new life actually started at death. Most Wiccans believe in reincarnation. This belief coincides with the fact that one must die in order to be reborn into a new life. This is what the God does when he sacrifices his life. He resides in the underworld to await rebirth at Yule. After turning to the Samhain Sabbat, which represents death, the Wheel of the Year continues turning toward Yule, the beginning, representing life and rebirth. The eternal cycle of reincarnation is celebrated during Samhain. The old God dies to be reborn again at Yule.At Samhain, we honor and communicate with the dead. This is when the Veil between the worlds becomes its thinnest. The Veil is the doorway or curtain that separates the land of the living and the land of the dead. A modern approximation to Samhain would be Mexico’s Day of the Dead.Samhain remains my favorite holiday. It honors what Western society is frightened of and makes it something beautiful. We honor the dead, we don’t fear them. And I don’t mind dressing up either! Some of my few good childhood memories include decorating our front yard as a little haunted house. I feel that my lifelong attraction to this holiday is about looking beyond this life to the spiritual realm, and being at peace with it.We celebrate Samhain by doing rituals and based around the information above.

Are spirits/ghosts dangerous to humanity?

Spirits and ghosts are actually two different categories of non-physical beings. Ghosts are primarily the non-physical spirit or imprint of humans who have died, whereas spirits can include a wide range of other entities. Some other commonly seen spirit entities are angels, ascended masters, archetypes of mythological beings, aliens, demons, gnomes, fairies, leprechauns, and many types of animals.Numerous people have told me they see their cats and dogs after they have died. In most cases these non-physical entities are not harmful to humans, but in some instances they can be. For instance, some people who have been addicted to food, drugs, smoking, alcohol, or sex while alive can form attachments to people after they die. This is referred to as earthbound spirit attachment. They can cause a person to have cravings like the one who died. More rarely, highly negative entities sometimes attach to people. This can include extremely fear driven or angry beings, or even demons or jinn. They can cause a person to have violent or aggressive behaviors and do things a person would not normally ever do. They can cause a person to have strong negative emotions which are very difficult to control and make life miserable for the people around them. A person who is an expert on spirit releasing should be sought in such cases.

Why do some Christians find Halloween satanic?

It's ignorance. I have yet to find anything remotely close to what they say about Halloween... not in modern or ancient times. They claim this is the time when Pagans sacrificed people, yet nothing in history shows that Except - The Roman Catholic Church... who said these things about ALL Heretics (this includes Everyone who is NOT a Roman Catholic - yep, that means they were saying these things about other Christians as well)
And yet, here they take it and use it against Pagans without realizing exactly where that "devilish" concept even came from and WHO it was towards.

If they give any kind of biblical reference for "not doing what the pagans do"... then all of their holidays are gone, wedding rings (which was a pagan concept - a religious one, brought down thru egypt)... birthday's, especially those b-day candles, where you make a wish... everything in modern life would have to change, days of the week, days of the month, planet names, product names (such as Nike and Midas and Mars bars *gasp* no more candy!).

It's really amazing that they claim the "Know" about this stuff... yet when I did an extensive study on things like this, While I was a Christian, I couldn't find anything of the sort. No proof of such demonic things, except within groups of teenagers who are merely doing the "satanic" thing to be rebelious, for shock value. And those were mainly rumors started by the teenagers themselves.

People LOVE to point out the bad in others... it's their only way of making themselves look good. (See? They are demonic... come to Christianity we aren't demonic). It's annoying to see people do this, because there really isn't anything one can say to them that's going to make them look into it in an honest way, rather than take the bad they can find on everyone else, so they can feel better about their personal religion.

Do you enjoy celebrating Halloween?

There’s just something about the whole season that draws me in. The way the air smells, the leaves, there’s something mysterious about the world around me during Halloween. Plus, there’s the past that I’m drawn to of the more traditional Samhain; the true reasons that we celebrate Halloween, honoring our ancestors. For witches Samhain is the end (for some) the beginning (for others) of our Sabbat year. We’re saying good-bye to the old and readying for the start of the new year at Yule (for others it is the opposite and Samhain is the dawning of the new year) The veil between the living and the deceased is at it’s thinnest and I can feel the abundance of spirits moving around me. Plus, scary movies and an excuse to eat all the candy I want.
