Scenario You Have Admitted A Child For High Fever

Light Headed, Fever, Swollen Tonsils.. Can I sweat it out?

Even though the symptoms are the same as before doesn't mean it IS the same thing as before. It could be strep, this time, or mono. You don't really know until you get a culture and/or an examination.

Some people DO sweat it out. This is why many Drs don't recommend tylenol or aspirin until your temp hits >101 or 102. If it gets toooo high, though, there's a risk of having a seizure. And if you still don't get it treated, and if the body temp gets too high for too long, one can suffer brain damage.

Sweating it out depends on the particular organism. Some organisms are very heat sensitive and will be sweated out with a body temp of 102 or so. Some organisms, like strep, are pretty hardy and aren't as effected by the high temp. Strep a lot of times will appear as white patches on the inside of the throat, but I doubt if that's 100% of the time.

There's always prayer. One time my daughter, who was about 6 at the time, had a sore throat. There were faint white patches in the back of her throat. It was late on a Friday night and I knew that the ER would have the usual Friday night mishaps, drunks and other party related injuries. I didn't think there would be anything to gain from going to the ER, with neither of us getting any sleep and maybe getting home after 4AM. I thought we could always go in in the morning if things still looked bad.

So I prayed. I wasn't all that confident, either. I just put it in God's hands. I said, "God, if you're really there, and if prayer really is effective, please take this whatever-it-is from my daughter. She is your child, too. She is innocent and does not deserve to suffer, in the ER or at home. Thank you for being there for us." Something like that. We both fell asleep and awoke in the morning like normal. My daughter didn't complain of anything or of feeling badly, and I almost didn't ask. (Kids will sometimes play the sympathy card if they know it will get them special attention.) Finally, my curiosity got the best of me and I asked my daughter about her sore throat. She said, "What sore throat??"

So whether it was "cooked" out by a high temp or an answer to prayer, who knows? But God gets my vote on that one.

What are some reasons for an overnight hospital stay?

The reasons for keeping a patient overnight in the hospital can be as varied as the clinical conditions. If a patients took an overdose of pills or alcohol, you want to observe the vital signs and make sure the patient breathes on his/her own. By keeping the patient overnight and observe clinically you make sure that the patient is safe to send home the following morning.Sometimes a patient with breathing problems (like asthma) seems to be better initially after an adrenalin injection. You keep the patient overnight to monitor the breathing and be sure the asthma attack does not come back overnight.A patient with an infection around a wound needs intravenous antibiotics to reach high antibiotic levels to kill the bacteria in the wound. Often it takes only overnight monitoring to be certain that the antibiotic works. The patient can be sent home in the morning and be brought back every 12 hours for further IV doses until it is safe to switch to the less effective oral antibiotics when the infection is clearly controlled.A psychotic patient is brought in to the emergency room. It is not quite clear whether the psychosis is due to a street drug or whether it is from a flare-up of schizophrenia. The purpose of an overnight observation is to see how the psychosis is doing overnight. If the patient had a psychosis as a result of taking a street drug, it likely will be gone in the morning. Substance-induced psychosis - Wikipedia. But if it was due to a flare-up of schizophrenia, the patient will have to be hospitalized for further treatments. Drug induced psychoses usually wears off fast and the patient may be able to be sent home the following morning.

Chicken pox ? or amoxicillin side effect ?

First of all, have you had chicken pox? If not, that could be what it is. But if not, it could be an allergic reaction. It may just be a skin reaction to amoxicillan, but it could be something much more dangerous. Do your spots have a black dot in the middle? Do that have an irregular border? Chicken pox are perfectly round. If the spot has a regular border, then please disregaurd what I am about to say. If they are not perfectly round, and/or have a black dot in the middle, you need to get to the hospital IMMEDIATELY. There is a reaction called Stevens-Johnson's syndrome. At the onset of this reaction, there is fever, sore throat and chills, which you probably have anyways if you on antibiotics. It is followed by the development of chicken pox like lesions, only the borders are irregular. If this is the case, you are in a lot of danger. The blisters will develop on all your mucus membranes (include the ones on the inside, like in your lungs, on your intestines, your eyes, everywhere. This puts are REALLY high risk for infection. Most people do not recover from the disorder because it is extremely hard to treat. Unfortunately, your doctor will have probably never heard of this disease, and tell you that it's chicken pox. This has happened to lots of nurses I know... the doc just didn't listen, and by then it was too late. The lesions had opened up and the patients got infections. If you have the things I mentioned, you need to demand that you be seen immediately, don't take no for an answer.
If it is chicken pox, and you are an adult, youmight be admitted anyways. Chicken pox is much more dangerous in adults as there is an increased risk to septecemia. Regardless of the cause of the rash, you need to seek treatment, whether it's just a skin reactin to your meds, chicken pox, or worse case scenario, Stevens-Johnsons syndrome.

Oh, and stop taking your pills immediately!

Can a person with a burst appendix be saved?

I've been having an argument with someone who insists that if someone's appendix bursts, they are going to die, period, and the only thing that can be done for them is to give them painkillers. The only actual support he has for this assertion is "it's common sense" and "antibiotics don't work that fast". I quoted the wikipedia article on appendicitis which says that peritonitis is life-threatening but doesn't say anything about it being always inevitably fatal, but he just made fun of me for citing wikipedia.

Which one of us is right? Is it possible for a person with a burst appendix to be treated and survive?
