Science Help Totally Baffled

Are the limits of science the limits of human knowledge itself? For example, there isn't a satisfactory definition of 'matter' either in science or in philosophy. How much can science answer important philosophical questions?

Are the limits of science the limits of human knowledge itself?Well. Kind of. Our understanding of Limits of Science will certainly match our human knowledge limits so far. For example what we thought we knew were the limits of Human Knowledge - Internal surgery - has changed. Now we may think we have reached the END of Human Knowledge in regard to some parts of Science. And we may have reached the end of our Limits as we find out the real Limits of Science. Take the speed of light (some now trying to call it the cosmic maximum speed). We believe we have reached the limits of science cause we believe this speed limit WON’T be exceeded. Hence Human Knowledge - match Limit of Science.But brain surgery? We know our current Human Knowledge limit WILL be exceeded as we grow our Scientific understanding of the human brain. Hence - Limits of Science not yet reached.With that the OP switches tracks, gears and method to question our mutually agreed definitions.Like ‘Matter’. OTOH, most people can agree on what matter is - but yes there is scientific debate on very arcane thought about energy state / matter state.So, there will be a GREATER understanding of scientific definitions that may or may not indicate a greater Human Knowledge but rather a more precise LIMIT of science in regard to some of our knowledge.With that the OP switches tracks a third time now arching os off into How can science answer philosophical questions?No relationship to Human Knowledge. No amount of certainty every satisfied philosophy. Us, pseudo thinkers can always say - “yeah, but what if…”When Philosophy ever does reach the Limits of Science, we bring that knowledge OUT of philosophy and call it something else. Like thehermeneutics of sociological implications of gender labelling. :)Overall - a) Yes and No b) Kinda of we do c) Nah not reallyAudstone

What are some stories of 'Wow, I finally understand' moments in your computer science experiences?

From my first semester at IIIT-HWOW - "I finally build a basic calculator that can ADD and multiply and can understand how it works"Long back, when I was in my third or fourth standard when I first laid my hands on a computer the machine was like a mystery. It was then, for the first time I had a very deep urge of knowing how it works. Even about 2 years back I did not know too much about the internal workings of it. Perhaps it is the passion I had for knowing and understanding of the mysterious machine that brought me to IIIT Hyderabad. During the first year at IIIT Hyderabad, the mysteries were revealed step by step. It all started with the course called digital logic and processes where we were taught in detail the working of the basic processor and in the labs (which were fun sometimes when we tried to be involved in the experiments performed) we even designed an ALU that performs the four basic arithmetic operations. A bit of historical background was also told to us. Parallel to DLP in C-programming we learned how the software part of the systems are actually made.C programming was taught in C - a high level language. In DLP we learned programming in assembly language and also in the machine language that comes does to how the signals are send in a actual wire(in the form of bits of digits 1 and 0). Then in the second semester we learned the working of actual processors and workings of present day computers in a course called Computer System Organisation. The tools learned in the two ITWS courses gave us added information.Although I did not take most of the courses I mentioned very serious, their introduction and conclusions, generally my favorite or only parts of a course I enjoy had that WOW moment.

Physics help- I am so baffled...?

There are approximately 10^22 molecules in a single medium-sized breath of air and approximately 10^44 molecules in the atmosphere of the whole world. Now the number 10^22 squared is equal to 10^44.

So how many breaths of air are there in the world's atmosphere?

If all the molecules from Julius Caesar's last dying breath are now thoroughly mixed in the atmosphere, how many of these on the average do we inhale with each single breath?

Science (Chemistry) Balancing of equations?

H2 + O2 ---> H2O

It is an unbalanced equation (sometimes also called a skeleton equation). This means that there are UNEQUAL numbers at least one atom on each side of the arrow.

In the example equation, there are two atoms of hydrogen on each side, BUT there are two atoms of oxygen on the left side and only one on the right side.

Remember this: A balanced equation MUST have EQUAL numbers of EACH type of atom on BOTH sides of the arrow.

An equation is balanced by changing coefficients in a somewhat trial-and-error fashion. It is important to note that only the coefficients can be changed, NEVER a subscript.

The coefficient times the subscript gives the total number of atoms.

H2 + O2 ---> H2O

The hydrogen are balanced, but the oxygens are not. We have to get both balanced. We put a two in front of the water and this balances the oxygen.

H2 + O2 ---> 2 H2O

However, this causes the hydrogen to become unbalanced. To fix this, we place a two in front of the hydrogen on the left side.

2 H2 + O2 ---> 2 H2O

This balances the equation.

Baffling bacteria math problem?

although at perfect conditions, some bacteria might be able to have a generation time of 20 minutes, that is not to say that they do actually reproduce every 20 minutes. as they consume lots of resources, and become surrounded by other bacteria, are up "against a wall", or in their own waste, etc-then they stop reproducing.

but to do the fun part of your math problem, lets say that a bacteria weighs about 1/5,200,000,000,000 of a gram, which would be the weight per bacterium if 1 bacteria becomes 2 million pounds of bacteria at 24 hours by doubling every 20 minutes. so 5 trillion bacteria would weigh one gram. if you start with 1 bacteria, and assume a doubling time of 20 minutes, then there would be 5 trillion bacteria after 14 hours, weighing one gram. then you would need 454 grams to weigh one pound, so you would need 454 x 5 trillion bacteria to weigh one pound, and this would happen at about 17 hours. now you need to have 120 pounds, so you need 454 x 5 trillion x 120, or 270 quadrillion bacteria. this occurs 19 hours and 20 minutes, so it takes about 19:20 to reach 120 pounds.

remember that i assumed a weight of one 5 trillionth of a gram, based on your 2 million pound estimate for 24 hours. it might be 5 quadrillionths of a gram, in which case you would need 1000 times as many bacteria, which would happen 3 hours and 20 minutes later, at 22:40 hours. so you need to adjust for the actual weight of the bacteria that you are using, but there are about 1000 times as many every 3 hours and 20 minutes.

once again, they dont really double every 20 minutes, they only do under perfect conditions with unlimited resources.

Has the progress of the Sciences and the Arts contributed to corrupt or to purify morals?

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/marcel...

...the struggle to protect one's subjectivity from annihilation by modern materialism and a technologically driven society...that scientific egoism replaces the "mystery" of being with a false scenario of human life composed of technical "problems" and "solutions." The human subject cannot exist in the technological world, instead being replaced by a human object...technology has a privileged authority with which it persuades the subject to accept his place as "he" in the internal dialogue of science; and as a result, man is convinced by science to rejoice in his own annihilation.

Science makes man into an object. Morality is but a condition between objects.

The Arts are another story...the morality can go either way or be totally neutral...and is considered as a way to evoke emotion such as shock value, etc...and is often considered relative in nature.

How do I decide between commerce or science in class Xth?

This question baffled me when I had to choose between the two-I was the 3rd ranker in my school and quite intelligent. I got these long lectures from people stating that science is for the brainy ones, and commerce for the ones who aren't good enough to take up science. Well, fortunately my family totally disagreed. It was left up to me to choose.So what this is what I did:-Read up on the subjects and fields I could take up after pursuing science or commerce.Took aptitude tests. I don't know where you're from, but in Mumbai, these tests were available for free or at minimal costs at various colleges.Met a career counselor. (You need to find a good one, most of them charge a bomb.)Spoke to a lot of people who had taken either of the fields, and asked for their reviews. Understood how much efforts are required and what are the stakes.Lastly, discussed with my family (you could do so with your close friends or people whom you trust for honest opinions).Good luck!
