Scottish Football Section Did You See The Death Of That Irishman On The News

Do the Scottish and Irish like each other?

Most regular Scottish and Irish people seem to have a quiet affinity for each other as if not quite brothers then definitely something like cousins. In many ways we like each other when we both say in our respective countries and admire each other from afar. The Irish in Scotland (including parts of my own family) experience a relatively high amount of racism (possibly for want of a better word). This is rather unfortunately largely the result of tensions from the troubles in Northern Ireland and (sigh) football rivalries. The Orange Order (anti Irish, anti Catholic far rightish movement) is also unfortunately fairly powerful but it’s power is significantly waning these days. That being said while an Irish person in Scotland will probably meet some crazies most people in Scotland really do admire the Irish and most interactions will simply involve you being complimented for having a sexy accent.Scottish nationalists do strongly feel an affinity for Ireland and they make up around a third of the population with significantly more being somewhat sympathetic. There also is a respect for Irish culture in Scotland (albeit somewhat derivative sometimes with Irish bars run by the most Scottish people you’ll ever meet) and I’m told there is respect for Scottish culture in Ireland (although sometimes the Irish do like to claim Scottish things for their own in a way that sometimes annoys Scottish people especially when Irish people claim the kilt to truly be Irish or other somewhat silly and nationalistic claims). From my fairly limited experience in Ireland I received a warmer welcome there than I might have expected if I was Irish in Scotland however there are still tensions in the north between Ulster Scots and Irish.

Is it really legal in UK to shoot a Scotsman with a bow and arrow?

It is still technically legal to kill Scots in York, as long as they are carrying a bow and arrow. Anyone planning to bump off a Scotsman in York is running out of time ,more than 800 laws, some of them dating back to the 14th century, are destined for the scrapheap.Read more: http://metro.co.uk/2012/04/04/sc...Read more: http://metro.co.uk/2012/04/04/sc...

What do Irish and Croatian people think of each other?

Croats have warm relations with the Irish for circumstantial reasons. Both nations are largely Roman Catholic and as a rule of thumb, Croatia traditionally has warmer relations with Roman Catholic nations. Both nations are loud and friendly with a culture of hospitality. Irish tourists and sports fans traditionally get along with the Croats very well. Both nations have an element of hostility towards England. Croatia much less so, it's mostly restricted to their football rivalry. For the Irish, this obviously goes deeper for historical reasons. This is why Croats and the Irish often 'click' during sports events when England is involved.Ireland has become a somewhat attractive destination for Croatian migrants over the last few years, especially in Dublin. Over 10,000 Croats now live and work in Ireland as of 2016. On the other side of the coin, Irish tourism in Croatia is also growing.Historical parallels also draw sympathy and form the core of both nation's identity. Both nations were colonised throughout their history and treated brutally as a result. The Irish being colonised by the English/British and the Croats by the Austo-Hungarians, Ottomans, Venetians, Yugoslavia etc. Both nations also fought wars of independence, the Irish in the 1920s and the Croats in the 1990s.

In Irish, what does "whack fo lol de ra" mean?

The words themselves have no meaning. An old singing tradition in Ireland is lilting, diddling or sometimes called mouth music. When the language and music were banned the Irish improvised the sound of instruments with their voice and lilting became an art. Many Irish and Scottish ballads written in English have some of these 'nonsense' words or lilts added. It is also akin to Swiss yodeling.

Was the British empire evil?

Seems you dont understand much about history. The British Empire brought democracy and helped form some of the worlds greatest countries. Would India and Pakistan be the two great Countries they are today without the experience of British rule. I argue they would be a war torn group of small kingdoms. Much poorer than they are now without the unifying force of a common enemy. Just one example. Oh and all would have been ruled and exploited by Napoleon. Next it was the wealth of the British Empire that helped greatly to win 2 world wars and the survival of Democracy. Im not denying millions died im saying millions more would have done without it. The British Empire was a leading light in the abolition of Slavery and had the military power to enforce it. How many millions are alive today? How many Africans? As for racism dont talk rubbish try being black or muslim in Hungary, or the United States for that matter. As an American tourist said “I just couldnt get over a British Police man saying “excuse me Sir can I help you look lost” find that response in the US if your black.

Are Northern Irish people instantly able to tell whether another Northern Irish person is Catholic or Protestant?

This is going to be a very crude, generalising answer. For that I apologise. I suspect some people will be offended. I am so embarrassed, I have gone anonymous. But you did ask so here you go.There are indicators. They are not always correct.Does the person have an “Irish” name? They are likely to be Catholic. However my background is Catholic and my name is English. People sometimes assume I am Protestant.Other indicators:School attended (A “Saint” school usually indicates one denomination rather than the other) However Saint schools are open to anyone who wants to attend.Newspaper: Irish News v Newsletter. However a well balanced person will read both/neitherSports played (GAA usually indicates one denomination rather than the other but again open to anyone who wants to play)Where they liveFootball team supportedWhether they march on the 12th of JulyMember of organisations like Masons, Orange Order, Knights of St ColumbanusAllegedly how someone says “h”Crude, ugly and awful. There are other “gives” but they are just a few.Now if you will excuse me, I shall go for a shower …

Why do Irish people have pale skin?

A US study at Penn State University found that Europeans' light skin stems from a gene mutation from a single person who lived 10,000 years ago.Scientists made the discovery after identifying a key gene that contributes to lighter skin color in Europeans, and the Irish fall into this category. The Mail Online reports that, in earlier research, Keith Cheng from Penn State College of Medicine reported that one amino acid difference in the gene SLC24A5 is a key contributor to the skin color difference between Europeans and West Africans. This is undoubtedly where the Irish get their light skin."The mutation in SLC24A5 changes only one building block in the protein and contributes about a third of the visually striking differences in skin tone between peoples of African and European ancestry," he said.Cheng and his team studied segments of genetic code that have a mutation and are located closely on the same chromosome and are often inherited together. The mutation, called A111T, is found in virtually everyone of European ancestry.A111T is also found in populations in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, but not in high numbers in Africans. All individuals from the Middle East, North Africa, East Africa and South India who carry the A111T mutation share traces of the ancestral genetic code. According to the researchers, this indicates that all existing instances of this mutation originate from the same person. The pattern of people with this lighter skin color mutation suggests that the A111T mutation occurred somewhere between the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.‘This means that Middle Easterners and South Indians, which includes most inhabitants of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, share significant ancestry,’ Professor Cheng said.Professor Cheng now plans to look at more genetic samples to better understand what role genes play in East Asian skin color. Perhaps he will take a look into where Irish redheads come from after this.
