I'm oversimplifying, of course, due to the nature of the question, but essentially SEO involves a set of best practices and strategies that help businesses augment their visibility on the Internet. As for the 2nd part of the question regarding the possibility of a person making a living from SEO work, the easy answer is yes. Most of the other answers so far address SEO from a freelance or entrepreneurial standpoint, explaining that the market is saturated and full of unsavory characters all vying for same business. In this way, it can be difficult to make a living, since there are always "black hat" SEOs promising unrealistic results by essentially spamming google. Unfortunately, many of these phony hacks blindside local business owners out of hard earned cash, only to damage the company's online presence with bad linkbuilding techniques which break Google's terms of service and lead to a penalty that can completely remove that business from the search results page. I am lucky enough to work for a large, enterprise level search marketing company (8th largest in terms of ad spend) that services many Fortune 500 clients. For me, it isn't just possible to make money from SEO, my entire livelihood depends on it. And right now, I'm making a pretty decent living from it-- more than I have from any of my other marketing jobs. If you have a good deal of diverse experience, a person can easily make upwards of 80k a year working for a large SEM company. Hope that answers your question!

Any skills that can help companies better connect with potential customers will always be in demand. SEO is one such proficiency, along with other complementary functions such as SEM, cohort analysis, and channel management. However, trumping them all is quality content that powerfully articulates the consumer benefits of the company’s product/service. You can buy your way to large numbers of likes and clicks, but to develop a scalable model that keep viewers engaged (and funneled through from visitor to customer) you need to hook them when they land and quickly convince them of your value proposition. If you have the ability to step outside the parochial “here’s what we do” and into the customer shoes of “why should I really care”, then marketing might be a good career choice for you (of which SEO is one piece). Web development, is it a good career?
You can definitely make a good living on web development, my friend got a decent paying job right out of high school and without any further schooling has had many offers from other places. He does projects for other companies while staying a programmer for the main one he works at. Also many businesses are going more web-based so this line of work will really be needed in the future. According to me if someone has done graduation in computer science or IT and thinking to build up the career in SEO then if will not help in long run. All the activities which are used in SEO are not that much difficult that it can not be done by any non graduate. The main activity of SEO that are used by most of the Best seo company India are blog posting, video creation and submission, forum posting, info graphic creation and submission, article submission etc... and these activities can be done by a high school student also. so totally depending on SEO is not a good decision. Yes but if you are good in development and want to develop your skill in Search Engine Optimization also makes a different sense.
