Servo Or Stepper For Solar Tracker

How can I make a sun tracker for a solar panel?

tbls101 has a good idea for the tracker, but let's take this one step farther. A clock motor large enough to move a solar panel, unless it is a very small one is going to be large, and expensive. Use the timer motor, as suggested, but attach a slotted disk to it, with a light source on one side, and a detector on the other side. As each slot comes up and allows light to pass through, this creates a one shot pulse which is used to cause a stepper motor to move 1 position to keep the panel aimed at the sun. At the end of the panel travel for the end of the day, a switch could be set to close, bypassing the step control to put the motor into full constant speed reverse, this causing the panel to swing back to the morning position. The whole affair gets it's start up call by means of a light detector, similar to those used to turn lights off at sun up. The control would, of course be set to turn the system on to track the sun during the day. While some digital control is going to be needed, the system would not need a "computer" to run it.

Servo or stepper for solar tracker?

Hello i am building a dual-axis solar tracker for a 2.5 Kg panel. I will use the following mechanical design http://img.bhs4.com/4e/0/4e02162ae02be3e4ce7208e0b133400a8bf1a19e_large.jpg
I want to harvest the maximum amount of energy, so it is very essetial to choose a motor that does not require much energy. So what do you think is better to use? a servo or a stepper? and which amount of torque do you think is needed for the motors to move and hold this panel?(if you can provide a link for the suggested motors i would really appreciate it). I will go with an arduino nano for the control of the motors.
Thanks in advance for your help.

What is the rating of a stepper motor for an Arduino solar tracking system?

It depends on how much the stepper has to lift, and how fast. For a toy sun tracker, the smaller the stepper the better. A geared stepper is best. Chose a stepper that works well with what you have. If your battery is 12 volts dc, then get a 12 volt stepper motor. Get a stepper driver board that can handle the voltage and current required.

Azimuth angle calculation For solar tracker?

Dear all,
I am building solar tracking application. Below Links gives infrmation about zenith and azimuth angle.

https://www.nrel.gov/midc/solpos/solpos.html

My tracker will be placed in north south direction .and axis of movement along east west. From above diagram it clear that azimuth angle will be 90 degree toward east and 270 degree west.

I have sensor which can measure output from +90 degree to -90 degree format. How to COnvert above angle to +90 degree to - 90 degree formats

Which motor and driver are suitable for a solar tracking system using PIC (the single panel is 50W, 12V, and 5kg)?

Original question: Which motor and driver are suitable for a solar tracking system using PIC (the single panel is 50W, 12V, and 5kg)?Multiple parameters to be considered while selecting a drive. I will list a fewAccuracy and speed : For your purpose a stepper motor will doTorque : Required torque dependent of eccentricity of the load. Mass x Distance from motor center to CoG (center of gravity) of the load. (Closer your mass CoG is to the motor axis, lesser torque is required.Motor driver depends on the motor you select. Ideally, you need to design a structure to have a minimum eccentricity to use a lighter motor. For this purpose, I would use a stepper motor with a gear reduction and ensure the motor, driver and other critical components are protected from environment.

Which mechanism is best from electric actuator and stepper motor for solar trackers?

Depends on what needs to be orientated to what,  stepper motor is a very accurate way to do orientation but need external sensors to determine orientation errors, if the sun is the target solar trackers seems the best option.
