Setting Price Goals For Home And Furniture

Protecting and Repairing wood laminate furniture?

First of all, your coffee table is "veneered" not "laminated". A veneer is a 1/32" thick piece of real wood glued over the structural wood.

Considering it is that thin, yes, scratches happen that can be severe. The veneer should NOT be peeling and that is cause enough to return / exchange it. If you do not wish to return it, it can be fixed with adhesive placed by hypo needle. Such a thing is available at the hardware store. Use a good epoxy and be quick to wipe up excess.

As for the scratches, go to the paint section of your hardware store, and look for pre-colored fillers. Apply carefully because if you need to sand, you only have one or two swipes with VERY fine sand paper on a 1/32" thick piece of wood. Goal would be to avoid sanding altogether.

Remove any furniture polish (soap & water, dry thoroughly), fill the scratches, fix the veneer peel, then apply polyurethane over it all. The only other approach is to have a piece of glass cut to size and place it on the top.

Additional info comments:
You are absolutely right about the lacquer vs polyurethane. Stick with lacquer.
As for your frustrations, we all share that with veneered furniture. But until I hit the Lotto, it's my kinda price.
