Shark Week Wrath Of Submarine

Shark Week: Wrath of Submarine?

The documentary and most of the details are fake. There was a boat that capsized in Hout Bay, but it happened back in 2012. The boat was a catamaran, and of course there was no direct shark involvement (although according to the news reports there were a few sharks seen in the vicinity of the wreck). There were three people trapped inside the boat in an air pocket. Those individuals were rescued. Two people died, but from drowning, not from sharks, and the bodies were recovered during the rescue efforts. (See story here: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-19953945 ).

Also, another few things to note:
* You can find references that the original story about a giant shark was created by journalists who wished to see how gullible newsprint readers were. The term "submarine" came about years later when a boat was attacked by what witnesses claimed was a "giant shark", and attributed to this other fake shark.
* Hout Bay where they claimed this occurred is about 100km away from "Shark Alley" which is located just off the coast of Gansbaai.
* And maybe a little more tenuous than the other two, but all the measurements used in the mockumentary were in US feet etc... A South African boat crew would most likely have responded in metric terms.
