Should Build Myself A Pool Table Or Just Try And Buy One

Are there any adjustable height wheels I can put under my pool table for easy mobility?

I have a full sized, 8 ft, 400lb pool table. It's in my garage and I used the garage for a new car and had to push the pool table to the side during the winter. I'd like to move it back into position, but I'm afraid that all the moving is bad for the table legs. Are there any adjustable wheels that I could attach to the legs that would withhold that kind of weight?

How much does it cost to move a pool table?

This varies greatly with so many factors.  The biggest of which:  is it a single piece slate table, thereby moving it (taking rails apart and slate off) does not require you to remove the cloth attached to the bed slate?  Only 6 and 7 foot tables are small enough to have single piece slate, and thus when taken apart, moved, and re-assembled, would not require new cloth, although that is the best time to do new cloth - when the table is apart.  Two or three piece slate tables will require new cloth installation as part of the move, so that must be considered.   It can cost nothing to move a table, if you have free transportation, enough guys to lift it without needing to take it apart, etc.   Onto best guesses to answer the question as a standard answer:  Plan on $200 to $300 to pay a company to: Dis-assemble the table, load and move to new location, and maybe set it up, if it is a SINGLE PIECE SLATE, which means the move does not include replacing the cloth at the same time, or, if they move the table, but do not set it up fully. Plan on $400-$600 to have a standard 8 or 9 foot table (which has 2 or 3 piece slate) to have the table disassembled, moved to a new location, new cloth installed, put together, and leveled.  Now this cost may or may NOT include the cost of the new cloth - they might ask you to buy it, or charge this range and indicate that the cloth materials are extra. So you can see there's no easy answer.  It also greatly depends on the area of the country, or should I say what country you are in - as well as how remote a location you are in. I assumed the USA, and not way out in the sticks, but fairly near a town in which there are potential billiards moving companies that would not have to travel outside of 30 minutes to reach either location.

What is the difference between a slate and a non-slate pool table?

Firstly by non-slate you mean MDF tables. Let's break this down:PriceSlate is more expensive than MDF (wood laminate) for multiple reasons. Slate bed pool tables play better. They are used in competitions and could last decades if looked after. The balls run smoother on slate and give you better game play. You can typically find a tournament quality slate bed table in the UK for around £700-900 whilst MDF tables range from £99-500. QualityMDF tables are cheaper and many companies brand them as "more fun" which is nonsense. They are lighter and easier to move around for sure but they tend to break under pressure and also can bend over time (this is common). Many MDF tables will start to have minor U bend on the middle over time and this makes a huge difference. Yeah you may get a few laughs from some curve shorts by accident but it doesn't play like a proper pub or tournament pool table. Slate bed pool tables are a lot heavier. The slate is thick and can range between 10mm up to 40mm in thickness depending on the table. Slate doesn't bend and slate bed pool tables can be re-clothed unlike MDF. Due to the slate beds being able to be re-clothed this gives it a huge advantage. If you spill a drink on a MDF table it will filter through to the MDF bed itself and cause damage you can't just simply change cloth, the table is ruined. GameplayTournaments use slate bed pool tables. This is all you need to know. All players will tell you how it feels so much better to play on slate. ExamplesYou can buy some cheap MDF pool table from major retailers and think you're getting a bargain but many top pool table retailers offer world class slate bed pool tables ranging from 6ft to 9ft on finance for as little as £20 per month.Check out this range of affordable tournament grade pool tables by Home Leisure DirectA slate bed pool table for as little as £649.Best place to go if you're looking to buy one.Hope this answer helps! I'm actually in the process of doing a video (like brainiac but more technical) on slate vs MDF so you can actually see the tests on camera and judge for yourself! Scott

How much can I expect to pay someone to refelt a pool table? How much would it cost to do it myself?

There are some great answers here. If I may add my 2 cents. 2 years ago I had my 8′ table redone. New rubber, Artemis brand, Simonis 760 cloth. Hired a guy to do this who had been recovering tables as a side job for 20+ years. (came highly recommended by someone I trust) He and his son spent 3–4 hours just doing the bed. Leveling the 3 piece slate, and new cover. This guy was fussy! The effort it took to get the felt stretched just right made me ache just watching him. He had already recovered the rails a week or so previously. Cost… $1000.00. That is, about $650-$700 materials, rest in labor. I am glad I spent the money and had hired this job to someone who has “been there, done that.”
