Should I Book Activities For Kauai Before I Go

What are some fun family activities in Kauai?

Depending on the age of your children, there's a number of fun activities to do on Kauai.  Having visited not long ago, I can tell you the following:The zip lines at http://www.adventureskauai.com/ in Princeville were amazing, but they are quite high and the 'King Kong' is 1200 feet long, so it might not be for the faint of heart.  There weren't any children in our group, but I don't see why a teenager wouldn't enjoy this.Taking a charter tour of the Na Pali coast (w/ snorkeling and meals) is a must do - we saw spinner dolphin pods, numerous whale breaches, and the Na Pali coast is breathtaking.  There were a number of teenagers on the tour - they all seemed to love the sea life.If you're planning to check out the Waimea canyon (which I think is a must), stop by Hanapepe and check out the suspension bridge.  You don't see too many of these around anymore.  Finally, if your kids are into hiking, Kauai has numerous trails.  The Kalalau trail is amazing as well as those in Kokee. All in all, a very adventurous place to be. :)

What are good activities in Kona?

I live on the Hilo side so my very favorite thing when I go to Kona is shopping at Costco! Of course that isn’t what you want to do so a few of my favorites: Beaches - Spencer, Hapuna, A bay (Anaeho'omalu), and many others. There are some interesting petroglyph fields but you would have to check as they may be closed to visitors. If you have the time to go north a ways, Hawi and Kapaau are neat towns with a lot of fine art galleries. Just past Kapaau is Keokea beach park which I particularly like and past there is Pololu lookout with a steep hiking trail going down to the water. Beautiful vistas even if you don’t hike down.To the south of Kona are other beaches, and Honaunau City of Refuge which is steeped in history of old Hawai`i. If I recall years ago we went to an area North of Kona where there was a recreated ancient Hawaiian village. My memory is a bit foggy on more specifics.Depending on how long you will be there, a drive to the East side of the island has a lot to offer as well. Sadly parts of the Volcanos National Park are closed due to damage from the eruption and earthquakes but it is opening up and repairs are being done. You can get pertinent information from Hawai`i visitors bureau.

Visiting Kauai for the first time - need vacation tips!?

We'll be there in January '07, can't wait! Kauai is the best island for hikes - definitely check out Waimea Canyon (Grand Canyon of the Pacific). I highly recommend a tour of the Napali coast; the 11 mile Kalalau trail is amazing but not for the timid. There's so much to do, but as others have said about Kauai, the best part is really doing nothing at all! Pick up a guide book (my favorite is the "Revealed" series, they're blue softbacks) and browse through and tag what interests you. Enjoy! Kauai is such a different experience from Oahu.

Kauai or Oahu.................?

As has been suggested, there are more options than just Kauai or Oahu. While Hanauma Bay is an excellent place to go snorkeling to get a safe, but up close and personal look at some of Hawaii's marine life, there are also other places you can go. On Maui, While Molokini gets all the notoriety on Maui, the Ahihi Kinau Bay & Nature Preserve also offers excellent snorkeling without having to pay to join an excursion. On the Big Island, you can night dive/snorkel with the Manta Rays in Kona.

Maui offers fewer beaches than Oahu, but more than the Big Island. Oahu offers the most activities that you might typically find in any large city, Maui is rather a mix of Kauai countryside and Oahu activities, while the Big Island offers the most varied scenery and weather. The biggest drawback to the Big Island is that everything is rather spread out and you'll end up spending quite a bit of windshield-time getting around from place to place.

On the other hand, the Big Island is the only place you'll get a chance for an up-close look at an active volcano. Although, most of the recent activity has required a tour by boat, plane or helicopter to view.

Into zip-lining, Maui offers more lines than the Big Island. Oahu has but one and I can't honestly give it a high rating. Oahu does offer some excellent opportunities for kayaking, even if you've never kayak'd before. Kaneohe Bay and Kailua Bay on the windward side of the island are both rookie-friendly, most of the time, especially during the summer months.

I invite you to check out my website and blog for more information and ideas that might help you to select the right island for your family. Start with an island by island over at http://www.myhawaiionline.com/islands and then check out the Activities and Special Places sections. Have a great vacation!

What to do in Kauai BESIDES the beach and or state park?

We are taking a trip in a few months and I have been looking into activities to do while we are there. Everything I find is either beach/water based (scuba, snorkel, surfing, fishing, etc) or park based such as hiking. Does anyone know of anything else to do? Interesting local places to shop? Neat places to eat? Tours?

Thanks for any help!

1st Time to visit Hawaii - Which island is best?

Each of the Hawaiian Islands has its own personality and character. So, knowing what type of person you are and what you like to do will help you decide which of the islands you will like.

If you like tourists and fishing you should like the Kona area of the “Big Island” of Hawaii. If you like solitude, a tropical feel, a rural atmosphere and you don’t mind rain, you should like the Hilo area of the Big Island. The west side of the Big Island has a few nice small beaches, including black sand beaches. Near Ka Lae, the southernmost point of the island you will find a green sand beach. Big beaches are not prevalent on the Big Island.

If you enjoy scenery, hiking, snorkeling, kayaking or surfing and don’t yearn for “night life” then the oldest of the islands, Kauai is for you.

If you are the kind of person who keep a bathing suit, snorkel gear or a surfboard in your car, then Maui is for you, because it has 120 miles of easily accessible and swimmable coastline, more than any other island.

If you have an artistic temperament or perhaps you like to get away and write, then seek out the island of Lanai.

If you love nature, hiking and solitude, then “the most Hawaiian” of the islands, Molokai is for you.

You’ll enjoy Oahu if you like beaches, shopping, tourists, high-rises, traffic and don’t mind a lot of other people. Honolulu is like a tropical version of NYC, or LA as it was in the smog-free 1950's.

Does anyone know anyting about the hawaiian island Kauai?

Get yourself a good guidebook.
The best that I've tried was "Ultimate Kauai; Kauai Revealed".
It's full color, photos personally taken by the authors and lists all the sights, the hiking trails with detailed maps, lodging info, and activities and prices. What's more, they have a few off-the-beaten track activities that doesn't cost you a lot of money.

You can find it at any bookstore.
Or you can look up this website and get a peek.

I've been to Kauai many times, but this book sure opens you
up to new possibilities!
