Why did you buy a dog?

You should not buy a dog. Rather, you should rescue one from the streets, who would otherwise lead a less fortunate/danger-filled life. We should be compassionate towards all living beings. Dogs have been used to humans and bond with them very easily. They help us heal from sorrows and greet us as if we are the most important person in their life. All they ask for is food and a shelter. Dogs are not status symbols (“I have a Labrador,” “I have a Saint Bernard,” etc) but are companion beings.Rather than buy expensive foreign dogs and helping breeders make more money, you should help the dogs of your own locality/nation. I rescued a Desi pup and she’s the light of our life. Go ahead; adopt and rescue a soul in need of saving. You know the saying, “You can’t buy love!” So, rescue one instead.

I'm curious, why do people get personal protection dogs?

Either people here have serious misunderstandings of what a PPD is, or some of them are disillusioned.
People do not but a 10-15K dog because they have nothing else to do, they do not buy one because they want to show off either. If you bother to look at the demographics of those that buy these type of dogs, you will see that they are people in their 30's and up with good jobs, making great money, large portfolios and are interested in providing their families with the best protection money can buy.

A properly bred, raised, selected and trained PPD is better then ANY alarm system and will offer more of a deterrent type of protection then the best Brinks one can.
I have NO idea why everyone says "get an alarm"...you cannot walk an alarm system, take it jogging, put it in your car, take it to work, put it outside with the kids, etc!!
No alarm system has EVER woken anyone up in the middle of the night, BEFORE a burglary occured, and let them know there is a possible problem.
No gun has ever done that either, but, a good dog has and will, every time.

Those who claim that a bullet can kill a dog, you are right, but, either you have never been a burglar or you dont understand how the dark and the SILENCE is your friend if you are one...fire a round, game is up!!!
Police agencies will tell you, a dog is the BEST deterrent money can buy, not an alarm, not a gun, a dog. Still, some others worry about getting sued if the dog ever bites anyone....You know what, I would rather show up in court with ALL of my family members with me rather then attend the funeral or the after effects of having my kids or loved ones hurt.
Some worry about the dog getting hurt while defending his family...TOO BAD...that is his job, he was trained to do it and loves doing it while my kids run to safety.
I can go on and on, but...hope I helped!

If I did buy a stolen dog, can the original owner take it back?

I MAY have bought a stolen dog. Three men came over to look at my new litter of puppies and claimed that my Sire was stolen from him. I am not saying it could not be possible but I didn't know if they will be able to take the dog back or not.
I have had the dog for six months and I paid for him from someone who said they could not take care of him anymore. Then when we posted my litter and pictures of the parents on ebay classifieds, some people claimed they wanted to see our puppies and then said it was his dog and had been stolen 5 months earlier. I have had the dog longer than that, but he may have been mistaken, who knows? He then said that he cropped the dogs ears himself. To me, that is MAJOR animal cruelty and not only do I love the dog but I do not want to give him up. Its not like it was a kid's dog or something, these men said it was their dog and belonged to all three of them since it costed $3000. I am not sure what to do but I know that they are taking me to court over it and I intend on fighting. I would even pay the $3000 back over time if the judge ruled but CAN THEY TAKE MY DOG!?!?

Inexperienced dog owner considering pitbull.?

You are a leg up on some licensed behaviourists I've known who have never owned a dog, nor trained one. lol

Its not really a matter of experience, but more a matter of ability. I can tell you stories of many experienced dog owners that would be incapable of properly and safely managing a pitbull terrier.

Your's is one of those situations where you must rely on the Breeder's instincts as to your abilities ... buy from a successful Breeder, one whose interest in her pups is continued in your capabilities as an owner of one of her pups. No successful Breeder is going to sell to an "iffy" home, they value their reputation more than their bank account.

Dominate and pushy? You are inexperienced. That's okay, at least you understand that you are. Dominate dogs are not pushy, they don't have to be. Pushy dogs are not dominate, that's why they are (pushy).

Well bred pitbulls/amstaffs are confident, testy and game; they are not dominate and pushy. Dominate and pushy are reactive - you don't want reactive, that spells slow and dumb. Well bred pitbulls are responsive, and as such, they are very easy to control; even in the heat of battle, even with the inexperienced YET capable handler.

I have no way to qualify your raw ability over the internet, but if you will take the time to find a quality Breeder, she'll be able to qualify your ability as acceptable or not for her breeding. After all - if she sells you a pup, you'll be walking out the door with her reputation in hand.
