Should I Consider An Adhd/add Prescription Medication

How soon do doctors prescribe ADD/ADHD medication?

Usually, too soon.

Could not giving a child his prescribed medication be considered neglect? Or grounds for stopping visits?

My sons father does not think that he needs his ADHD medication. (he is not a dr) I don't know where he gets this from since he has only been around for a year (my son is 7) and he has never been to a parent/teacher conference or dr visit. But he says that it's harming him.
My son is old enough to understand that his medication does work for him. His father refuses to give it to him on his weekends. The dr. said that he needs to take it everyday and that is how he prescribed it. I am wondering if this is grounds for me to take him back to court to get his visits supervised? I don't think it's his choice to make if our son needs his meds and it's not fair for my son because his meds really do help him alot. I don't want my son spending the night there if he is not going to give him his medication in the morning...can he be forced to give it to him or risk losing his overnights?

Can i get back on adhd medication as a adult if i was diagnosed as a child?

I was diagnosed at like 8 years old with adhd i stopped taking the medication shortly after i was diagnosed. I been of the medication for 15 years. What im wondering is if i can go back to a doctor that can prescribe adhd medication and just get it prescribed to me without having to pay for a psyichiatrist. So if i was diagnosed as a child do i have to be retested and go through the whole process im sure i still have it?

Travelling with ADD/ADHD prescriptions to Vietnam?

Hi,
My family and I are taking a trip to Vietnam ( we are actually leaving quite soon), and two members of our family are currently taking Dextroamphetamine (similar to Adderall in the US) as medication for Attention Deficit Disorder. As this is a controlled or restricted medication (i.e. the government has to give approval of the diagnosis before the psychiatrist can prescribe the medication, as it is amphetamines).
Does anyone know if there is any restrictions on taking ADD medications to Vietnam? We are from Australia, and the Vietnamese embassy here is HOPELESS and absolutely no help whatsoever, so we have no idea if we require any specific forms other than a letter form the prescribing psychiatrist or our prescriptions and identification.

Please, any advice is REALLY appreciated.

My new psychiatrist refuses to prescribe my ADHD medicine. I have been on Adderall for 20 years and have never abused it. What can I Do? I can't function without it.

This may be a function test. If he or she will still talk to you, and you already have a next appointment stop taking the adderal. Save your left over medication and take it with you to your next appointment. While there you should get a test to determin level of function. Show the unfinished bottle to prove you are not selling or otherwise abusing the medication. Ask to continue the usual dosage. If the doctor refuses at that time and insists on a diffrent medication aggree to the new medication. The new medication may be the correct solution to your needs or may be a security action to get you on a non abuse alternative. If your doctor is fiyering you, becaus of percieved missuse of medication…. Imediatly discontinue the medication and save it. Get an advocate, somone like a mother or father, sibling, or lawyer. Not a frend. To start calling around town to find a new doctor. Do not do the calling yourself. You advocate must ask for you, that you are seeking a dr who treats adhd in adults and will consider continuing your treatment as is. When you find one, have the advicate make an appointment and go with you. Take your left over medication with you. Do not conseal the fact that you were suspected of missusing the medication, produce the left over medication. This will prove that you are not selling the medication and disproof that you are adicted to the substance. By this time you should be fairly adjusted to not having the med, if you do need the substance your actions and statments will proove this for you to the doctor.Let your advocate talk about you as much as you are comfortable. If the doctor insists that you anser any question specificaly then do so.Finaly, if the dr takes you on as a patient: insist on your former treatment, listen to alternatives. If an argument is made that a diffrent drug is the same thing consider it. Do not hide your feelings. But don’t get angry. You probably have a general idea of what went wrong with the last dr. Don’t do that again.

I took non-prescribed ADHD medication (increased certainty of affliction, I took notes on the experience and dosage). Should I inform my doctor about this at my appointment?

I do not suggest it. It makes it seem like you are a drug seeking individual with an addiction issue. It’s one of the first things a doctor looks for when evaluating a patient… especially when requesting a controlled substance. Most people taking ADHD meds are going to be more focused. That’s what those drugs do. I mean… it’s meth in small doses after all.You need to describe to the doctor what plagues you, how symptoms keep you from effectively performing daily tasks. It’s up to the doctor to give you his analysis. A psychologist will evaluate you with a diagnosis. A psychiatrist prescribed the meds. Most family doctors will not or cannot prescribe them as it’s a controlled substance.

Qutting ADHD medication for a year to join the military?

For several years now, I've been considering joining the military, particularly the U.S. Marines. I would rather not lie about my ADHD and possibly be caught later on and kicked out for fraudelent enlistment, so I am going to go a year without medication. My question is, if I go a year without medication and a doctor approves of me, will I be able to get into the military for sure or would they still use it as an exscuse to keep me out at MEPS? I have never broken a bone, done drugs, get arrested or any of that which may disqualify me. Also, can I just go to a general doctor while I'm off the medication or do I have to go to the same doctor that prescribed them to me? I have only been on meds for about a year since when I was 16 to 17, if that helps at all.

What do MEPs look for when considering an ADHD waiver besides being off the medication for a year?

I’m assuming you mean MEPs as in military entrance processing station, so I’ll answer accordingly.Don’t turn it (the wavier) in. Don’t let the fact that you were diagnosed surface, or prescribed at all. They don’t have access to such information unless you were in an inpatient psychiatric hospital for months and/or court appointed for mental health reasons.I speak from experience. They don’t have access to many things that they should. Hell, I joined the marine corps with a few traffic warrants and a diagnosis of ADHD/prescribed medication. This is one of many weak points in their system. As long as you can pass the urinalysis, they’ll never know.
