Should I Cut My Damaged Hair And Get Box Braids Help

Protective styles for very damaged relaxed hair! Braids, Twists help?

My hair is very very damaged and of course it is all my fault.
The reasons are I don't drink enough water, I don't oil my scalp, I use a lot of heat on my hair, I swam 2 semesters without a swimming cap during the winter (I live in Chicago) the cold was very harsh on my head, and I didn't wear hats and I just have been doing every thing wrong when it came down to my styling my hair. Stress on my sophomore year might've been another reason.

As a result of all this maltreatment, my edges are terrible. The hair on the middle of my head is breaking off, and I have split ends everywhere.I was going to go to the shop to get a trim. The people I went to before all this kept my hair in really good shape but I haven't been there in a while.I plan on going there to get my ends cut and some kind of protective style but I don't know which one to choose.I'm about five or six months post of my relaxer and now because I have nothing to stress over my new growth is coming in a lot.

I was going to do box braids or Marley braids.
I have concerns about box braids because I've never had braids before so I don't know what I want.
I don't really know how many I want. I DO know that I do not want them to be so tight so what should I ask my stylist to do? The same with the Marley Braids, what weave, how many braids, etc.

Styling at home, what deep conditioners, shampoos, oils, etc are good for relaxed hair?
When styling what should I do so I won't use so much heat and still look pretty?

Braids receding hairline....HELP!!?

Breakage is caused when you have heavy braid around Your hair line, or something heavy tugging and pulling in the area of your hairline, since it is the most fragile part of your hair. Single braids cause this more damage than french braids or corn rolls. Sometimes the damage is permanent and sometimes you can buy a rogaine and grow it back.
The rule of thumb is that braids, wigs and weaves are a temporary style, since it can traumatize the growth process. If you take out your braids or weave you should wait 2 to 3 weeks before putting them in your hair again, and after the second time 2 to 3 months and then 2 to 3 years. allowing your hair to grow and breath.
I recommend that you try other styles that, that is healthy for your hair, fits perfect with your face and body shape, does not require to much heat or maintenance and you LOVE! or you can try stylish cornrolls that is not tight around your hairline.
Braids and Weaves are very attractive but your natural or chemically relaxed or permed hair can be also.

Chemicals causes hair loss.

> > > Hair dye chemicals linked to cancer
London, Feb 20, 2013 I've been saying that since 2009.
Hair dyes, which include home hair colouring kits and those used at pricey salons, are linked to deadly cancer-causing chemicals, warn scientists. In 2009 the Mail revealed that women who used hair dyes more than nine times a year had a 60% greater risk of contracting blood cancer.
A year later the European Commission banned 22 hair dyes which put long-term users at risk of bladder cancer. < < < <

HAIR WEAVES & BRAIDS: Some hairstyles, including tight braids and weaves, may increase the risk of developing an irreversible form of scarring hair loss, according to a new study in the Archives of Dermatology.
Seen predominately in African-American women, this type of hair loss, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, centers on the vertex (crown) of the scalp and spreads peripherally.
“Any style that causes too much tension and traction on the hair, such as braiding with artificial hair weaved in, can possibly lead to scarring hair loss,” says study author Angela Kyei, MD, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
In the study, 326 African-American women answered questionnaires about their hair-grooming methods, health status, and other demographic information. Dermatologists then performed a scalp examination to grade hair loss.
Nearly 60% of the women showed signs of advanced central hair loss with scarring. The women were also more likely to have type 2 diabetes and bacterial scalp infections, and sport hair styles associated with traction, including braids and weaves, the study showed.
“But hair loss is permanent, meaning that we can inject steroids or creams but it won't bring your hair back, so it’s very important to seek help with dermatologists early on,” she says.

One example who just got a weave:
"okay , i got it done exactly a week ago . it was ripple deep curls . now , it's A MESS . no curls at ALL . and then i have school tomorrow , how can i fix it and make the curls come back ?"

How long will my hair grow with box braids?

My hair is pretty short; its african hair and its very hard to manage. I just cut all my relaxed and damaged part and now just took out a weave. now my hair is very healthy and even. the thing is, its still really short. schools gonna start up in two months and i want my hair to be at least shoulder length. Now its really short just an afro. maybe up to my ear or neck.
should i get box braids to grow it out? how should i manage my hair in box braids? also is there another way to have it grow long? thank you!

Why does my hair grow a lot faster when I put it in box braids?

The hair isn't really growing faster. Your hair grows daily but it usually breaks off at the ends because there is no biochemical activity since it's too far from the root. The exposure from the sun, environment, daily activities and clothes our hair gets is not very kind on the ends. So when you notice so much growth it's because your ends which are always normally breaking when not protected are not breaking at all because you have the braids on . This style is commonly known as PROTECTIVE STYLING as it's name entails it protects your hair if done correctly ofcourse !
