Do you listen to whole music albums of one artist or just songs from different artists?
Whole albums.I like to discover music myself and have no interest in Spotify’s logarithms deciding what I should listen to. I do have a favourite radio station (BBC Radio 6) which I listen to when I'm home which has opened my ears to lots of new music. If I like a song I hear on the radio I’ll listen to the album it comes from.I enjoy listening to albums because a single is like an advert for the album. The catchy single makes you wonder what else the artist has to offer and very often my favourite songs on an album are not the hits or the singles. It's also usually the case that an album is the complete work and should be listened to in this way instead of just picking a song or two and ignoring the rest.I probably think like this as I grew up buying LPs and then CDs. Someone growing up now would probably think differently as they can simply download individual songs. I think this is a shame as it means that the rest of the album is ignored and know from experience that songs can grow on a person and become favourites.I do, however, have lots of compilation albums which I like but these only make me want to hear the albums from which my favourite songs on the compilation come from.
What's the best way to start listening to a certain musician? Albums, "greatest hits" or singles?
I tend to view singles and greatest hits as largely interchangeable. Yes, many singles are not hits. To do a full survey of singles, you would need to do some research. In the age of Spotify and other streaming services, I generally go the album route. Because I can.Too often, a greatest hits or retrospective package overdoes it with filler from the uninspiring part of the artist’s career, probably in an attempt to sell more records. With jazz and classical, which form the bulk of my listening, the concept of singles and even greatest hits can be problematic. A greatest hits of say, Beethoven, would not begin to do him justice.Every hipster and their grandma knows the song “Fever” as sung by Peggy Lee. But who has listened to her great album “Black Coffee”? Or the surprising “Peggy Lee Sings Lieber and Stoller”? Who knows that “Fever” was written by Little Willie John? Albums, to me, are for the serious student of music. If I have a hunch that the artist was just a true one-hit wonder without a lot of hidden gems, I may go with the greatest hits package. But people can surprise you. A young fan might be forgiven for thinking that the band Yes was a one-hit wonder because of 1983’s “Owner of a Lonely Heart”, but their reputation rests on a string of densely composed albums from the Seventies. Those albums had associated singles releases, but who does gnarly bong hits and gets down to the single “Soon”, which was a fragment of one of their signature 20 minute epics? Nobody, that’s who.
Who are your favorite "greatest hits" bands?
Well I don't like Record Company Greatest Hits because the are usually full of nothing but massive overplay and loads of fail. I do, however have a lot of Homemade Greatest Hits CD's from Bands I like just well enough to have a CD of songs from like Fleetwood Mac, Kansas, and Heart for example.
Is it right to rank an artist's albums?
To me it depends on how one ranks them? If someone is going to pee on someone’s album(be derogatory) on what grounds is it founded? Too often folks sit around bad mouthing a group or their album, yet they’ve never been nothing more than a listener. There is a difference in listening and performing, likewise there’s a difference between bad mouthing or ranking due to merits. Is one qualified to do the ranking? on what grounds are these rankings founded? Thanks! Robert
Why do people generally not like the greatest hits of their favourite artist most of all?
For me I don't have money to buy every album of every artist I listen to because I listen to a variety of different artist, so greatest hits are great ways to get into an artist and then go dive deeper into their works. For example my mom owns alot of greatest hits cds and one of them was Phil Collins. I love Phil Collin’s music and that cd and as of late I went on to buy a Genesis Greatest hits cd, the Face Value cd, and the No Jacket Required cd. So greatest hits can catapult you into the liking of an artist. I also find that it is easier to buy albums of people who are making music still and are current artist at the time you start following them. When it comes to older artist who don't make music anymore then it is easier and more helpful to buy a greatest hits of them and then get into more of their music. I have tons of Lecrae albums because he is current and it is easier to keep up with everything of his as opposed to keeping up with a complete catalogue of every album an artist has ever made or ever will make all at one time. I will say one thing that yes it stinks when greatest hits don't have every greatest hits and it makes it harder to get other albums by that artist in fear of buying the same songs. So greatest hits can be good and bad just depending on how you utilize them.
