Should I Keep Feeding My 7 Month Old Puppy A Puppy Food Or Adult

Accidentally feeding our puppy adult dog food for over a month?

Oh, gosh no! You are NOT an awful mom and while there are nutritional benefits to feeding him puppy food, so much of the difference between the two is good marketing, different sizes of the kibble pieces...and how much it costs.

Do you realize that many of our pets eat better than some humans in third-world countries? Even if your dog only got adequate amounts of adult food from the time he could eat, he would still be healthy. A LOT of the hype about puppy food and kitten food is for the owners, rather than the pets themselves.

I can only imagine the thumbs down my answer will get from food purists who think that only one brand will do, and blah, blah, blah. My pug was found abandoned in the woods, living on bugs and whatever her little "puppy ingenuity" could rustle up. I gave her puppy food her first year, and she is thriving, in spite of her early months of suffering.

Is it ok to feed my 7 month old puppy adult food?

My 7 month old puppy loves my 5 year olds adult food. I don't know if he's just wanting it because its different or if he really likes it but he goes straight up to his food and starts munching away. I have to take the older dogs bowel away and say, "no that's not your food." Eventually of course when he gets hungry he eats his food but iam just wondering if it would be ok if he started eating the adult food now?

Is it ok to feed my 5 month old Puppy Adult Dog Food?

I have a 5 month old Siberian Husky / German Shepherd mix puppy who is currently 5 months of age and weighs a good 50lbs+. I was feeding him Chicken Soup Adult dog food and just recently switched over to Diamond Lamb and Rice Adult Dog food which he loves. Im kinda concerned that he's not getting all the nutrients that he needs but he doesnt look or act as if he isnt. He seems like a healthy active happy pup. I can never find the puppy dog food for the brand that I buy for him so I just get the adult dog food.
Ive spoken to someone about it and they told me that its better to just give my dog the adult dog food because he is a large breed and when you feed them puppy food they tend to have bad hips and such.
What should I do?

At what age do I start feeding adult food and not puppy food?

Fostering a 10 month old Border Collie puppy starting this Saturday.
I'm still trying to find a decent quality food that isn't gonna break my rescue's pocket book(see here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... )

But I want to know, should this dog still be fed puppy food? Or should she be on adult food? Never had a puppy before, sooo, this aspect of dog caretaking is new to me.

Can I give my 5-month-old GSD adult Pedigree food?

Thanks for A2A Pratish :).Congratulations for the new kid in the family. Glad to know that you are concerned about feeding him properly. However, I will not sugget Pedigree for a pup and even when he geows older therr are betyer options availaible apart from Pedigree. You can include oats, portidge, mashed boiled vegetables or soup(carrots, cabbage), cerelac(occasionally) and little water. Do not force the pup to drink water. Rice/ Chapati mashed with milk diluted with water will also do.If you really wish to do for packed food, you can try puppy food from better healthier brands such as ‘taste of the wild’ or Venky’s dog food. I will suggest opting for puppy food rather than dog food. Consulting his vet before choosing a pup food is even better.Hope this helps.Thank you.

I mistakenly ordered adult dog food for my puppy of 4 months old. Is there any issue with it?

Abhishek D has the right advice.I personally have sworn off all food from a box, except treats. I agree ordering a box saves time and effort, but if you can find the time, please cook food for your dog. It is nutritious, tasty, healthy, and with the right advice, it can be wholesome. Somehow the whole process of cooking food for your doggie translates into love. Ruff loves us for it, and it’s great fun. Cook a large amount and freeze it in 4/5 portions for two days.

What will happen if I feed my 6-month- old puppy adult kibble?

At this age? Probably nothing. It'll depend on the breed — a Great Dane puppy has a lot more growing to do than a Shih-tzu puppy does. Most of the nutrients in puppy and kitten food is fat, protein, carbs, and other high calorie things to provide lots of energy for growing bodies and brains. What this means, though, is that if the animal is six months old and already as big as he's going to get, you risk ending up with an overweight adult. It's much harder to get your pet to lose weight than it is to get them to gain it.I would say do some research into your puppy's breed, compare the current size and weight to an adult's, and if they're pretty close, I would switch to adult food. But obviously, your vet would know better than a stranger on the Internet, since they know your pet's full medical history. Always confirm everything with a professional before taking any advice you read on here.

Can a 7 month old dog eat adult dog food?

The Guy at PETCO told me to try Wellness simple ingredient canned food for my 6 1/2 month old Chihuahua anr that it was all life stages but after feeding it a few days I saw it says adult dog food. Is that bad to feed her?

What do I feed my 6 month Labrador puppy?

We shall purely go by the ingredient list. What you see in the ingredient list on the bag is what you get ultimately in terms of your dog's health, coat, growth, life span etc.,Now, we look at the ingredient list, how do we make a decision? The top 10 ingredients make up 80% of the dog food compositionFirst ingredient is the most important since  there is more of this than any other ingredient. So what should you actually see  in the label?A good rule of thumb is to look for a good source of protein as the first ingredient. Ex: Deboned chicken,  chicken meal, lamb meal etc. All these are high quality proteins. A good rule of thumb is to look for a good source of protein in the dog food.Fruits and veggies such as carrots, mango, papaya etc.,If opting for a food with grain as opposed to a grain free variety then go for the whole grains such as oats, barley, brown rice  etc.,What you should most definitely not see in your dog food when you are paying good money:Any "by-product" meals  like  ex: chicken by-product meal.  In chicken, a by-product could be anything from undeveloped eggs to intestines.Artificial colors and preservatives. These have no nutritional value. Things to watch out for:  Ethoxyquin in any food with fish in it. Propylene glycol, Butylated hydroxyanisole aka BHA and Butylated hydroxytoluene aka BHT are all highly controversialSome of the most common allergens for dogs include corn, wheat and soy. So its a good idea to avoid these. Some brands mask the amount of corn they have by naming  it differently and spreading it across the label. For ex: ground corn, corn gluten, corn barn, maize. If you were to group all of these corn ingredients as one, they might far out-weigh the amount of meat in that food, and be the first listed ingredient. Ok. Now that we have a basic understanding to make an informed decision, let's have a side by side look of the puppy food brands available in the market. Ok to give 7 month old Jack Russell pup adult food?

I know some breeds you should keep them on puppy food for 2 years and some for just a few months. My Jack is 7 months and Im wondering when is the best time to make the transition to adult food? Is he old enough now to eat adult dog food? He is neutered and current on all shots.

p.s. -- I know a popular reponse will be to "ask my vet" but I am in the process of moving and dont have a regular vet at the moment.
