Should I Leave A Light On At Night For My Hermit Crabs

Should I leave a light on at night for my hermit crabs?

no lights needed at all for hermit crabs ... given the choice, they will always chose shade ... i have a moonlight reptile bulb over one end of my hermit crab tank, more so i can see what they are up to without bothering them with bright light ...

I have an aquarium light on my hermit crabs should i have that on them during the day?

you should not use an aquarium canopy with hermit crabs ... the deal with hermit crabs is the humidity level ... there is no way to maintain the correct humidity with a fish tank and canopy ... unless you have a fogger on a timer ... also, hermit crabs do not need bright light, a fish canopy is too bright for a hermit crab ... i have a night light next to my tanks on all the time and they just get naturally occurring light during the day, in the evening i put on a lamp on the same table they are on ... and overnight the nightlight but that is purely for my enjoyment so i can see what they are up to :O) ... they are nocturnal and need no light at night ... i would suggest getting a mesh lid and cover most of it to keep humidity in ... i went to a plastics company and for 10 dollars had a plexi-glass lid made for the tank and the ventilation holes spell out the words "hermit crabs" ... it cost 10 dollars to have done ...

http://i390.photobucket.com/albums/oo349... (the blue is just the protective cover, it is actually clear plexi-glass, i have one for the molting tank that says "Shhh ... I'm Molting" ... fricken cute :O)

Can you use a black light for hermit crabs?

Depends. Just a black colored light or UV? I wouldn't use UV due to it's possibility of be harmful to them. Normal heating lights(if that's why you're using one) will do fine.
Actually, I never ever needed to use any lights...
No UVs to stay safe.

About lighting @ night for hermit crabs...?

Save the expence and get flouresent bulbs. I use a large coilled flouresent bulb in the winter and a small one during the day in the summer months, they will last longer.
As long as you have a deep enough substrate where they can burrow for darkness to cool off, de-stress and or get ready for a pending molt, at least 4 inches of coconut fiber that is moist, and dark places to hide, 24/7 lighting is fine, I have always dpone it this way, you will need a thermometer and hygrometer to tell you both temp amd humidity levels so your tank will be at its best.
Some crabs are active during the day in artificial conditions such as in captivity and it is nice to have light for them if they are out. As far as being nocturnal it is a defense against predators if they cpome out to eat etc in the darkness so the only thing to worry about is your humidityand temprature levels as well as being able to have a place where it is in total darkness to release the molting hormone to start the molting process like a deep enough substrate and an area for the hermits to cool off in your tank. The flouresent coiled bulbs give out enough heat but do not fry your crabs if something goes wrong.

Cras do one thing because they are in the wild and then do other things because they are now in captivity where there are no predators, right now 1/3 are deeply buried, 1/3 are sleeping under a log and 1/3 are awake. The crabs all switch between all their different activities through the day and night, alot of my hermits are hand fed goodies and have a bowl of food from which to snack from.

Do hermit crabs prefer light of dark?

dark, I used to keep a heat light that is dark spectrum of light on at night, they come out in the night, and like the heat.

Should I turn my heat lamp off at night for my hermit crabs?

you should not be using a heat lamp for a hermit crab tank ... heat lamps evaporate humidity, not to mention hermit crabs do not like to be under bright light ... and turning it off overnight means the temperature will constantly be fluctuating and hermit crabs require a consistent environment ... if the temp drops to even 72 degrees they can become less active, consistent low or lower temperature they can do dormant and even die ... you should get a proper tank heater and lose the heat lamp altogether ...

What are moon glow lights for reptiles or hermit crabs?

It's not a necessity. You really don't need it in your hermit crabs cage. They'll live without them, that's for sure. I've had my hermies for a while now, with no such thing as a moon glow light.

Moon glow lights are made to imitate the moon's glow, so they don't bother your nocturnal buddies. They're not very bright. Any other lightbulb would bother them, and is not advised. However, they are not a necessity, but I think your hermit crabs might be happier with one then without one.

I wouldn't worry about it, as some moon glow lights can be a little bit high priced. But no, I have never heard of any pet NEEDING one. You really only should have one if your hermit crabs temperature is too low at night time.

How do I keep my hermit crabs from keeping me up at night?

You can't because they're nocturnal. You might have to move them out of the room at night.

How long during the day do Hermit crabs need the light source?

Crabs usually like it moist and shaded/darker environments....A light that is not intense may be fine for a few hours but I feel regular diffused light from a window is enough. You should mist the tank/area you keep them daily and provide them a few rocks to hide behind or slightly dig under.
