Should I Move Cross Country

How much does it cost to move cross-country?

No that is not enough $$. Shipping rates are by weight. The moving company picks up your stuff - and for this small amount of belonging the "package" will be moved from truck to truck to get it to it's destination a easily as possible and that may not be in a few days, but may take weeks. If you fill a whole truck this would not be the case. Call around for rates. Check airline tickets - you are probably looking at $450 round trip depending on when you fly. Car rental if you are over 25 years of age - prices vary wildly depending on time of year/week etc. Figure in a hotel and food and you have a $1000 weekend. If you are moving for a job or school you could ask for help from the HR department - you will need to know what neighborhoods to avoid also - so maybe letting a real estate agent look for you would be wise. You will have to pay a one month security deposit, plus first months rent and deposits on all of your utilities. It looks like you do not have a car - will this become a problem once you are there? You will want to live close to public transportation. An advocate in Boston would be wonderful - do you know anyone? Ask your friends if they have relatives or friends there.

What is it like to move cross country?

It was close to as easy as a typical New York move, but it took a while for my stuff to go from one coast to another. I had to make do camping out on cardboard boxes for a couple weeks. I moved from Brooklyn -> Mountain View around this time last year.My experience was a little different because I picked a moving company that I trustedpacked most of my own stuff well, because I have around ~2.5 years of professional moving experienceI'm a little confused by the $10k+ quote, because my move cost less than $3,000. I'm a single guy, though, and I bribed my mover for a discount (it might have otherwise gone over $3.5k). That's the only interesting part of the story: me bribing the guy $500 to count my apartment as a one floor rather than a two floor walkup. The cultural differences between coasts are way more significant than the actual move itself. Maybe I am just jaded because I've moved 100+ households in NYC and just feel that if there's no piano and no five floor walkup involved it's not that hard.

What must be planned for with a cross-country move?

www.upack.com is a great option for cross-country moving (long-distance moves are our specialty). It sounds like a ReloCube would be perfect for your situation--it's a 6'x7'x8' weatherproof container that you can place your own lock on during transit--so only you will be in control of your belongings. Transit is through the ABF's efficient transportation system, so stops are at secure ABF terminals along the way (no hotels/random gas stations). You're on the right track with donating your items to charity and only moving the important stuff. Good luck with your move!

Could I move cross country after college?

Of course you can; and if you have the means, you should! After I graduated university I went to live and work in Japan for a few years, then hiked and camped my way around the UK and the USA before returning to Australia to find a ‘proper job.’I’ve never regretted it. Keeping in touch with friends and family is so easy these days, with the internet. And if you don’t like it? Well, home isn’t going anywhere - you can always change your mind and go back!

Where to move after college? Cross country moving?

I have been to Portland twice. So I cant be the judge on how wise a move this would be.
I would suggest Logan Utah a mid size city cost of living would be much cheaper than Portland. Logan is a growing city along the Wasatch front that would have many job opportunities. The great thing about Logan is recreation opportunity are in Logan’s back yard mainly Logan Canyon. Beautiful Bear Lake is just 40 miles east.

Should I move across the country and get engaged to my ex (who is still on good terms with me for now)?

You definitely shouldn't move across the country to get engaged to your ex. But it would be reasonable for you to start dating long-distance, or to move across the country to start dating again (if it makes sense financially and career-wise). You need to see whether you're still compatible and still interested before committing to marriage. Just be careful because if you move so far for her, you may decide to stay with her even if it turns out not to be a good decision, just because you already invested so much. I'm definitely on the side of trying out your relationship again though! My husband and I had to become long-distance after just a month of dating, and we were that way for 2 years. We decided to do it because we believed it would be worth it and that our budding relationship was something special, and we wanted to see where it went. Now that we live in the same city and are married, we definitely know it was worth it for the initial struggle.

How much money should I save up to move cross country in the US?

If you move to NYC, all you need is the bus fare and a smartphone. You can be a glorified hobo.Shelters….soup kitchens… Charities… Samples… Street donations… Food pantries… Discount stores… Expensive trash… Per person transportation fares…. Free internet… Power outlets everywhere…You can, literally, not have a job in NYC and Live… Not "survive"… LIVE.Shelter for a bed, food, and storage.Charities for food, clothes, and whatever the hell else that can be portable.Street donations for money and, possibly, food and clothes.Discount stores for fancier things, with your street donation funds.Expensive trash for fancierer things and, maybe, for extra funds if you're able to sell it.And free internet and power for entertainment and education with your smartphone.Hell… You can, even, have free safe sex in NYC… Free condoms everywhere, and free dental dams and female condoms at fewer places, but still plenty. AND, if you know club promoters, YOU CAN EVEN GET FREE ALCOHOL !!!! @_@ (as long as you don't look like a hobo) quite literally, as long as you don't look like a hobo (which is not the same as purposely looking trashy) you can be in certain clubs, as long as you're not a bigot.And/Then, if you're "proactive?", you can get government assistance and slowly get a job ' a place to live ' and health insurance. It's a very fucked up system that allows almost-anything to happen, which is great news for those who've, completely, screwed up their lives; bad news for some who want better while getting assistance; and whatever news for those who can afford to not be greatly affected by the rules.NYC is a parodox. As long as you know the rules, know how to manipulate information, get the fuck over yourself and your emotions, you can surf the city.Just don't bring your pet.

Should I join cross country or get a job?

Depends on the state you live in. In California, you can get a work permit at 14 years of age. Your jobs are pretty limited, but they are out there. I know many people who have juggled all three things (high school, cross country, and work) and have not had too many troubles. They, of course, had support to make sure they weren’t alone in their ventures. Both getting a job and joining the cross country team seem like viable goals for you. If you make sure you are realistic and properly managing your time and priorities, there’s nothing wrong with doing what you have mentioned. This is the best time of our lives to be trying new things and beginning to transition into adult life, don’t let it slip because you were afraid.

Want to move cross country,,but have NOTHING?

Everyone here makes good points. It is hard to start a new life and it takes cash. You are best off working for a couple of months, saving up, and then leaving.
But it can be done without cash (I'm living proof). It all depends on how well you adapt and how much you can lower your standards. If you're hitchhiking pack light and keep your bag with you at all times. If you're friends with any musicians you can usually catch rides when they go on tour and all they'll ask in return is for you to help them haul equipment before and after shows (this will take you ages to reach your destination though). Also when it comes to accommodations I would stay up for the duration of the cross country trip unless you're comfortable enough with who you're travelling with to sleep in the vehicle. Whenever I'm in a new city and need a place to stay I always go to www.couchsurfing.org many of the people will let you sleep on their couches for two weeks or so which is enough time to get situated once you're there (if you need more time, migrate to a new couch!). It's a little sketchy the first time you try couchsurfing but if you pick your host well you'll easily adapt to the lifestyle. That being said you should always have a little backup cash as it's terrible to be a day early and have to sleep in the post office or park as your host can't accommodate you yet.
ALSO
since you're going across the country you should try to look into airhitching. You can get free flights on private planes (usually with business people). It's a little difficult to arrange but if you can manage it, it makes the trip easier!

Moving cross country- dogs in a UHAUL?

You will need to measure the crate and then go to U-Haul and ask to look at the truck size you would be getting. I know the U-Haul trucks have bench seats in them [3 seats across] and you might be able to seat belt the dog crate on the seat.

Also, you should check out the prices of Budget Truck Rental and Penske Truck Rental. Some of the trucks from those two companies have 2 seats with no middle seat which would leave extra room for the crate.
